I think Martin if he really didn't want to, could have hit Steve, kicked him in a tender spot. Steve was not acting aggressively. He was persistent, but not an actual threat. I think Martin was more afraid of himself and his reaction to the man. He liked Steve, but he hadn't thought before that he could like him in this way. That's why he was afraid. But of course that's just my interpretation.

I love how the story unfolds! The characters, especially David, have rich insides and it's good to read about their dilemmas. And I really like that here decisions have consequences. Good book. I recommend it!
