I don't think the police could prove anything anyways. Plus, the staff of the hospital probably wouldn't care enough to actually call the police, they'd just think "Oh the patient's dead? Whatever, I guess." And it's not like the guy's mother would care enough to pursue anything as well, since she doesn't care about him either.
