The flood came into being when the Precursors got attacked by the forerunners, some of the precursors turned themselves into 'dust' to escape the forerunners betrayal so they could reform later on, but the process got corrupted while reforming and they turned into the flood we see in the game. they are also the reason why the ancient humans went to war with the forerunner as the humans were fighting against the flood. burning worlds until they did so on a forerunner world trying to contain the flood, which the forerunner took as an attack and caused the war to start between them.
In the Halo universe, the Flood was a biological weapon created by the Forerunners, capable of infecting and consuming all sentient life. They absorbed the bodies, knowledge, and memories of these life forms to fuel their own rapid evolution.

Yeah, I agree there. Also, whole thing seems a bit out if it is the book as the soul fragmant only has knowledge of voldemort up to when it was created. so for him to already have all this dark magic and be able to get passed dumbledore magic, seems a bit far-fetched to me.

yeah, it is confusing to me, too. the only difference is the location, and maybe keeping the body there until the blood drains, but I don't see how this will have him acting like this. it's not like he is performing a bloody eagle or other such gruesome actions. he is just doing the same thing he has been doing before. and to be honest, you would expect him to feel better about it after learning about the crops. at least their deaths can be 'honourable' for feeding the old gods and saving hundreds from starvation from the increase of crops.
