I think that considering his background in the militay, his character doesn't seem to fit the mould. in the beginning, it seems like he cared about his crew and was trying to develop them into an elite unit and that is why they had some level of discipline. however, the way the story is going, he just seems like a really incompetent leader, even sacrificing his elite mecha soldiers at a whim all because of personal glory.
