it's also in a way part of her apology for calling him short .
"Mr. Bilbo," she said, glancing up at her father quickly. "Will you be my friend? I'd like to have a hobbit as a friend."

You will have to keep reading to find out why Bard is not using his name. It's in chapter 58 if you are impatient. Most people will know that this is infact Bard, but they won't know why he's not using his proper or expected name.
Sara glanced behind them to where the bargeman, Ranson, stood with the elves near the back of the boat. She was a bit surprised to see Airidan operating the rudder rather than the man. Ranson's eyes caught and held her gaze and for a moment and Sara was taken aback by his face. The last truly human face that she had seen had been little Estel's and he was only 10 years old. Ranson's face stood out among the pointed features of the elves, clashed with Bilbo's round little face and seemed soft next to that of the dwarves. His face seemed bare in comparison save for the neat mustache and a small patch of hair beneath his lower lip lip and short stubble on his chin and jawline. She had almost forgotten what a human face could look like, that she was in fact not just another dwarf in the company. Despite her more delicate features and frame, her short height fit her well amongst the others, especially when draped in Thorin's over large coat.

I suppose it depends on the 9-10 year old. some of that age are very precocious and collect friends rather eagerly. Once again I have changed their ages to suit my story .

Because according to the Tolkien legendarium there is no set time for Bain's birth. There is also no mention of Bard having daughters . Those are additions from Peter Jacksons movies. So since there is no hard fast rule according from Tolkien himself I changed it to suit my story better. I you notice I do this quote alot throughout the story merging the books and all movies and and even after that tweaking it even more.
"Welcome to my home," said Ranson when most of the movement had ceased. "These are my children. Bain is 16," he pointed to the boy. "Sigrid is 15." He nodded to the other girl. "And of course my youngest Tilda who is almost ten."

Yes it will continue. life's just been a bit crazy. The next chapter is half done.
Definitely more chapters to come, life has just been busy. Thanks for reading !
Yep! 60 years from the end of hobbit till Bilbo leaves the shire and another 17 after that when Frodo leaves the shire with the ring. Aragon was 87 during the LoTR so counting backwards that makes Estel 10 when the quest for Erebor happened .
"What are you doing here Estel?" asked Sara. He looked up at her fingering a small bow that was slung over his shoulder.

yes it was. he's just a kid at this time. most people forget to calculate the (17?) year gap between Frodo and Bilbo's exodus at the beginning of LOTR. nice catch! if I ever get to the sequel he will be 20.
