My guess is that Old Man Crane is Q, the NPC Assassin.

Thanks for filling the story here. They were supposed to implicate Annabelle. She enlisted QJ to help her keep tabs on someone; then, they were forced to split up. Had QJ not stepped forward, he would have escaped, and Annabelle probably would have been killed. OP might have been finished.
