There is also not typically a coin toss unless it is a tournament it is usually just the away team bats first and the home team bats second. The Captains will still meet with the umpires but usually just so the umpires can highlight specific rules, or rules that only apply to the ballpark they are playing in as each ballpark in the US is different and can have some different rules for example if they are playing in an enclosed park they may have a rule if the ball ever hits the ceiling.

I feel I should let you know that almost no team would ever want to bat first. Whoever bats second gets the opportunity to win the game without response from the other team as whatever the score is after the 9th inning is the final score unless there is a tie. This is why the home team always has last bat.

This makes not a lot of sense since platoon advantage means that right handed hitters should hit better against left handed pitchers
