Chapitre 6: Mentality

Areis rubbed his chin as he looked at the dirt-covered crawling Adam. Who possessed a furious gaze, that was pushing forward to the other side of the training field, dragging himself forward madly through the dirt.

A strange glint appeared in his eyes tracking Adam as he moved through the field. He quickly resumed his attention on the rest of the heroes, a thought crossed his mind: 'What a weird one.'

At the training field's center, the sunlight harshly washed over Adam's body, however, his eyes remained sharp as he pushed on.

The environment shouldn't determine if he went on.

His ideas of going on a journey would never be realized if he remained mentally weak, comfortable in how he lived his life or choosing to act when things were easy.

If he cowered because someone was better than him or the environment was not to his liking, he really wouldn't be getting anywhere. In his mind, he would be stuck in place independent of where his body was or how amazing he became.

'It was no good to simply endure either.' Adam thought.

His bones creaking as he continued pushing forward through the dirt field. The heavy gazes of the heroes that were racing past glancing at his wretched, scratched body that was covered in dirt and drenched in sweat as he kept going.

He ignored their judging, pitying eyes.

By living to his utmost, his absolute best could be put forth.

To change himself, he had to do something he wouldn't consider, an act that his mind would repulse: risking his life, for nothing.

Adam in a state of dulling but still-blazing focus could feel that a headache was coming on, he felt filthy and increasingly weak. He would be in last place...

He would be humiliated. But, if he got through this, what was humiliation and jeering compared to an unchanging waste of a life that he had held.

And what help would worrying himself over people's opinions do, when they were leading their own lives and he his own?

He would change his life! This test was revealing who he was. Even if he perished, that would just be his worth.

His thoughts on finishing to the end crumbled. Despite attempts at defying his impudent thoughts of laying still, of quitting. Each time that Adam moved made his body feel heavier, and more like a corpse.

More bothersome...

His fingers dug further into the dirt, he was close to stopping when he remembered.

Nothing that is easy, is worth chasing after.

'What was I chasing after...?' His thoughts paused as this question pounded in his head.

He wanted to live a life that he could be proud of, a life where he gave his all.

A life that he would never give excuses for should he reach a dead end.

Adam snarled: "I will get to the other side."

He paraded: 'I will thrive in this world. I won't cower away from challenges.'

Adam declared: 'I won't be scared to lose.'

His greatest fear rising to the surface of his thoughts, his determination fracturing but managing to bite back the halting but present dread.

It would be harmful for him to keep clutching onto a life that brings neither meaning nor happiness. A lifestyle that never would be sought if he was to live on, he would chase a fulfilling life whatever shape it took, and thrive.

His worries retreating like a weakening tide from his stabilizing beliefs.

A trace of energy started to return to his body. As his body moved forward with renewed energy, so did his will.

Thriving is the only thing he would accept, any other choice would be akin to surrendering to circumstance, to the past, and to the unknowns of the future.

He would not be so easy on himself as to allow that to happen.

His thoughts solidifying further: 'Right now, I have only to focus.'

His tensing body slowing, but sharpened thoughts giving him the will to continue.

The end of the field entered his line of sight.

Empowered by the sight, it helped him dredge the last remaining energy from his body, his hands scrambling through the dirt.

Adam celebrated, as his body reached the field's end, the wisps of energy from his new conviction, forcing his exhausted body forward, fading.

The sound of nearing steps in his ears, his eyes and body as heavy as lead, he made it.

He saw the heroes start to run back.

'Still...' A thought ate at him.

Should he be content?

Seeing the heroes running, he asked himself: 'is this all I was made of?'

'No...' He refuted.

'No!' Adam snapped, his consciousness returning.

He refused to give up, to surrender. To just live easily.

He would sleep later, what came first and foremost was continuing.

"Move!" Adam cried out, urging his failing body to turn around, his body leaving a trailing imprint in the dirt.

Adam's body which was overwhelmed with exhaustion started to move once more.

As it did, it seemed to have flipped a switch in his mind, a spark of a thought taking over: 'This was my body, this was my life!'

A crisp, refreshing sound entered his ears, as a blue system notification appeared.

[Ding! You have made a breakthrough in your mentality, overcoming a limit of yours.]

[You have been rewarded with the [Unbreakable Will] skill!]

As he read out the system's words, he felt the weakness that was encroaching his thoughts vanish, and his will strengthened noticeably, solidifying.

Adam's motivation to go on was tempered, for the pessimism that was decaying at his will having been obliterated made his body both feel lighter and easier to control.

His lost confidence restored with this skill, Adam pushed himself off the ground. His body was sending him signals of exhaustion and pain, his body shaking madly, and a headache marched on. But, no longer could they interfere with what he had to do, such sensations retreating to the edges of his mind.

He had a new goal to achieve.

Today, he aimed to take first place.
