The advisors of Roderst had been working hard for a long while now, not sleeping for unhealthy periods of time to try and avoid the kingdom descending into chaos and as far as it went, it was pretty good.
Sure, some areas were going through famines or were on the verge of it but the efforts to try and create more farmlands had been made loud and clear, enough that the peasants didn't feel like beheading nobles since it seemed like the king was doing his best to help them.
Honestly, any signs of attempt would have been enough since it wasn't like the peasants would have been able to know the inner workings, so apart from the typical insane residents that claimed Famine itself had been spotted riding on its horse, everyone was feeling fairly hopeful.
Especially since the country had gained a hero! Not one in title, one announced by the world itself, or so people were saying...
Frankly, no one knew whether it was the world, the system or a random with very bright fireworks but it didn't matter, a hero was the real deal, far from the definition of the word however, 'true' heroes were chosen solely and only by the system itself.
It might pull so weird things sometimes but everyone believed that this was the beginning of the end of their situation.
The country was still locked up after all, all of the neighboring nations were still keeping their borders as shut as ever, even building walls where there had once been absolutely nothing.
The Scourge was doing its job perfectly, it had gotten so deep inside of everyone's brains by this point that it could make them believe lots of stupid and clearly false things, but its power wasn't meant to fool around and could easily be broken if used carelessly.
The armies of the Obsidian Queen had already made their way to the conquered city of Rova, they were ready to be unleashed at any second now, the city was a true fortress before and with the addition of the troops and multiple ministers, only death awaited any trespasser.
Not to mention the Monster Queen herself was present...
A meeting had indeed taken place as Axiolypito had predicted but it seemed like the queen wasn't worried much about this, it was within her calculations that a hero would emerge, that was the typical event when a ruler of monsters rose, nothing unexpected about that.
There was one thing that was bothering her however, due to her title, she was knowledgeable about the whole process of hero versus the leader of monsters.
"It would appear that I wasn't designated as the target to take down, normally, some sort of symbol should have appeared above my head" she had explained.
During the whole thing, Axio kept a straight face but deep down, he felt like gloating about the fact that he had been deemed more important to fell than the Obsidian Queen herself, however, he knew that this wasn't exactly a good thing.
He hadn't been able to kill the members of Otrera even after luring them into a trap, building up a little army and with some additional explosives, without the help of one of his kin.
He had gained new abilities but he didn't think that would cut the deal with this 'hero', he hadn't unlocked anything that was directly offensive either, just more stuff that either needed tools to function or that were good to tire and distract.
In the end, he had kept silent about being the nemesis of that hero and been warped back by Faceless, he still had to take care of his yellow-eyed kin after all, he was using the crystal to guide him but he was making his way toward it as slowly as possible, searching for any opportunity to take advantage of.
The fact that a hero arose had made people excited but also suspicious, after all, what reason could a hero appear for?
Deadly wars between coutries? Never happened.
Famine and plagues? Neither.
There was only one reasons heroes had ever appeared, either an entity controlling many minions, the like of demon lords, monster kings and such, although it wasn't confirmed by anyone yet, everyone was pretty much certain that it was it!
And with this certitude, everyone was beginning to suspect that Rova had been taken over by this entity and even that the country's situation was its fault.
Only mistake being that the hero wasn't pit against the leader but a wretch.
Currently, said wretch was scampering around as he made use of his new abilities to gather monsters and brutalise anyone who made the fatal mistake of being within his eyesight.
After everyone became convinced that there was a monster king or something, from the unwashed vagrant to the very much washed king, the Obsidian Queen decided that laying low was now overrated and as such, she used her powers as the Queen Of Monsters, to make every single monster in the country go all out and extra aggressive.
Resulting in all kinds of monsters flooding everywhere as they started reproducing at unnatural speeds and utterly lost their fear of man for those that had it.
An enormous part of Roderst was thus thrown into an unending war against the monsters that once lived there without much problems.
Allowing Axio to shove his needle claw into lots of napes, with this many monsters under his direct control, he could make sure that no ragtag adventurer party or such could get out of his grasps, especially since he always played it carefully, either waiting for them to get themselves in an area they couldn't get out of from more than two ways or waiting until they set up a camp for the night.
Still, this sort of things could only work on the incapable, any groups that wasn't just a bunch of peasants and such hoping to get a good pay for clearing out weak raging monsters would instantly sense the hundreds of monsters Axio was dragging around as he went.
Their animalistic tendencies and lesser minds may be taken care of by the needle but they still weren't anywhere as stealthy as Axio, when he encountered a group that wasn't worth the effort, he would just let them deal with a bunch of his spawners while he casually moved away with his finite troops.
Even after all that XP, he had yet to gain spawners that could spawn monsters but this ability had still evolved a bit...
