Chapitre 22: Chapter 22

The next morning Bella woke up in Jett's arms and she snuggled deeper into the warmth. He was awake, looking over to the window and playing with her hair. He looked like he was thinking about something and his mind a million miles away.

"Morning handsome. Penny for your thoughts."

"Morning. I'm just trying to figure out how to keep seeing you. I'm on the road a lot." He kissed her forehead, seemingly a little heavy-hearted.

"I know. I'm worried too. I have no intention of hiding our relationship. It's just going to be hard," she let out a sigh as his hands smoothed over her hair.

"But you can't promise we'll be together either."

"No, I wish I could. Why couldn't I have met you before all this? I would never have left your side. Now we can't figure out how to be together and it's killing me," Bella said as she wrapped herself closer.

"It's killing me too. There has to be a way around this. There just has to be."

They both sat holding each other, knowing the inevitable would soon come. If they had just a moment longer in each other's arms, maybe the answer would come to them. The sad truth loomed over them like a dark cloud. They would have to be apart.

Jett felt like his heart was breaking and couldn't picture being without her even for a moment. He knew it was crazy to fall in love so hard and fast for a woman he couldn't have, but the risk was worth it. No one was like his queen. She was perfect for him.

Bella now realized the sacrifice her ancestor made for love and how precious that was. She wondered to herself if she could do the same. Could she walk away for love? She knew that wasn't an option. She had a country that needed her and the guilt would drive at her. She needed Jett just as much as he needed her, but she couldn't be selfish. She had to figure this out before it was too late and she lost him forever.

Later that day, Bella was doing an event that presented her to the Mecca Island people. Jett was sitting on the stairs, just outside his guest room. With his head in his hands, he thought his world was crashing down around him. He heard voices at the top of the stairs, leading to a tower. He listened to the couple's voices that carried down the corridor.

"William, we can finally marry. Our son will be with us in public now. I've never been so happy," Cora cried tears of joy.

"My sister is ready to give custody back to us. Brian will be so happy. His tenth birthday is this week. Will you be home tomorrow to tell him?" Cora and William had a house outside the castle they had hidden for years. Meca royal laws forced them to hide their son's birth and the relationship. When she was pregnant with her son, the king told parliament Cora was ill. In truth, she went away while she was pregnant so she would not lose her duchess title. Stepping down was not an option. If anything Cora was loyal to her duty as a royal and to the people.

"I'll be there. I'm so happy we no longer have to hide our love. Once we're married, we can be together forever."

Jett dropped his head, hearing the couple talk about forever. He was starting to understand how truly backward the rules in this country were.

Hearing enough, he got up and sulked back to his room. Mason was waiting for him when he entered. The man was sitting in a chair in the corner, rubbing his chin as if he was contemplating what he was about to say.

"Mason? What are you doing here?"

"You know what you have to do, Jett. Break it off now, before you both end up getting hurt more than you already are. I can see that look in your eyes. You know how this is going to end. I told you you would end up with your heartbroken. You fall hard and when you do it always ends up bad. Son, I know you love this girl, but I hate seeing you like this."

Jett sat down next to him, folding his hands together as he leaned over his knees. He stared at the floor as if he wanted it to open and to be swallowed up. "I don't think I can walk away. How do you tell the women you love goodbye forever?"

"So, I'm right. You're already in love with her. I knew it. Damn it, Jett. You're setting yourself up for failure. I knew this would happen." Mason felt bad for the couple, but he tried to warn Jett.

"I know. I know what I have to do too. It doesn't make this any easier. We leave tomorrow. I'll do it tonight."

"Jett, for what it's worth, I think you are doing the right thing. If you can figure out how to be with her, don't let her go. I hate to see you going through this. You love hard. That's always been who you are. I think if you truly are in love, you are man enough to figure out a way to make it work." Mason patted his knee and left the room.

Scarlett with Noah was listening on the other side of the door. As her father left, they hid behind a knight's armor display in the hall.

Crying as she listening in, Scarlett said, "She's going to be heartbroken."

"She's going to need your friendship more now than ever," Noah sighed. "Listen... Jett's crying. We should go. He's such a manly guy, I don't think he would want anyone to hear this."

Scarlett nodded in agreement as Noah led her away.
