The man who had found Lucas and Stella was stretched out in his bed. He was on the top bunk. The mens' tent began to fill up. There were about sixty men and eighty women. The women had two separate tents, each holding forty. The men only had one tent.
The man had his arms folded behind his head. His buddy on the lower bunk began taking off all of the extra layers of clothes and replaced them with a heavy blanket.
(???: "So I heard you caught another immortal. Isn't that right? Keane?")
(Keane: "Huh?")
(???: "You caught the immortal.")
(Keane: "I did.")
(???: "How did you find him?")
(Keane: "I guess I didn't. He was on our campsite and had his back turned to me.")
(???: "I heard he had a girl with him.")
(Keane: "A baby as well.")
(???: "It's his?")
(Keane: "I wouldn't know. I think it might be.")
The man laid down on the lower bunk. Keane shut his eyes. The tent was noisy. He was ready for everyone to finally quiet down and sleep. He had night-watch tomorrow and he needed to be well-rested.
(???: "I bet he's going end up being like the other one.")
(Keane: "What? A pussy?")
(???: "Precisely.")
(Keane: "He came at me with a knife. He's got a bit of fight in him. Certainly more than Donovan, that's for sure.")
(???: "He tried to kill you?")
(Keane: "Oh, definitely. If I didn't react fast enough, that would've been the end of me.")
(???: "You think he'll fight for us?")
(Keane: "That's up to Allen to persuade him. Donovan didn't want to fight at first, but when Allen talked to him, he switched up.")
(???: "You think Allen threatens them?")
(Keane: "With what? Death?")
(???: "Sure!")
(Keane: "They literally can't die.")
(???: "Oh, right.")
Keane laughed at his buddy and the tent began to finally quiet down as all the men got settled into their beds.
(???: "He could still threaten them though, right? Like, threaten to cut their head off and put a bit of cardboard on the stump of their neck so it can't regrow.")
(Keane: "Doesn't Donovan already want to die? I don't think giving someone what they want is much of a threat.")
(???: "But what about the new guy?")
(Keane: "We haven't had him long enough to know anything about him.")
Keane turned onto his side and pulled the sheets up to his neck. He lay there for about thirty minutes. He was annoyed at himself. Usually, he was good at being able to fall asleep quick. But the immortal was on his mind. He scratched the bridge of his nose.
The guy under him was asleep. He could hear all the snoring men around him. He sat up. The tent was large. It had long poles along the middle of the tent holding up the triangular roof. Keane was situated more to the right side of the tent.
He slowly got out of his bed as to not wake anyone. He put on his jackets and boots, not bothering to tie them.
He walked out of the tent and looked around. There was a tower at the gate, and in that tower, a person controlling the spotlight sat. There was also another one in the rear of the camp. The spotlight is in the middle of the tower so it can be rotated all the way around and back.
He knew the guy at the gate tower. His name was Cameron. He was the guy who put shined the spotlight on him when he was taking the immortal and that girl back.
He climbed up the tower and got to the top.
(Keane: "How's the weather up here?")
(Cameron: "It's cold. So pretty typical weather.")
Keane sat down in the corner. He had one leg up and the other outstretched.
(Cameron: "Don't you have tower duty tomorrow? You should be asleep.")
(Keane: "It's only, like, what? Eight-thirty?")
(Cameron: "Yeah, it's your bedtime.")
(Keane: "Has the Harper Company come back yet?")
(Cameron: "Not yet.")
(Keane: "Do we know where they went?")
(Cameron: "I'm sure someone does.")
(Keane: "We're going to have to send a search party after them, huh?")
(Cameron: "They've disappeared before. They're probably just camping it out for an extra day. I heard they went out pretty far last time.")
(Keane: "They've been gone for two extra days now. How far could they possibly be? What about the Quinten Company? They've been gone a couple days. They need to hurry their asses back here so another company can go.")
(Cameron: "You know where they went?")
(Keane: "They went north. I don't know where exactly, but I know that much.")
(Cameron: "They have the minimum about of members right?")
(Keane: "They actually have four.")
(Cameron: "Whatever. I was only one off.")
(Keane: "My company hasn't been able to go out for a while. Our leader is out on 'sick leave.'")
(Cameron: "Didn't you just get back?")
(Keane: "Me and Iris went out on a food rush. You only need two people for that.")
(Cameron: "Oh, that's right. Did you find any food?")
(Keane: "No.")
Keane stood up and looked past they tree-line in the distance.
(Keane: "If we do send a search party, I hope I'm in it. I hate staying here all the time.")
(Cameron: "You never know. They could be coming back right now.")
(Keane: "I doubt it.")
They fell silent for a while. Keane inspected his dagger. There was no blood on it. His mind began to wander.
(Keane: "You ever get jealous of the immortals?")
(Cameron: "Sometimes. Being able to live no matter what sounds like a good deal.")
(Keane: "But what about the pain? It's still got to hurt.")
(Cameron: "I was with the people who secured the first immortal.")
(Keane: "I know.")
(Cameron: "They shot him through the skull. He didn't seem too bothered by it.")
(Keane: "Looks can be deceiving.")
(Cameron: "You always say that. I guess it's true. But you can't just hide pain like that.")
(Keane: "Sure you can. Some people can hide it real well.")
(Cameron: "Yeah. I guess the immortals aren't really people though, are they?")
(Keane: "I don't know. They look human.")
(Cameron: "Looks can be deceiving.")
(Keane: "Don't use my lines against me.")
Cameron finally took his hands off of the spotlight and stretched, cracking his knuckles. He turned away from it and squinted his eyes, looking at something.
(Cameron: "Oh, shit.")
(Keane: "What's up?")
Keane peeked over the ledge and saw three people. Two people with big guns. Fully automatic weapons, equipped with lasers and scopes. Between the two was a man dressed no different from the two guards. But he had an air of importance about him. He walked with purpose and despite the heavy layers of clothes on him, he seemed nimble and fast. He had to slow down for the two guards to catch up, but he would always speed back up to his usual fast pace.
(Keane: "Is that Allen?")
(Cameron: "It's Allen. He's going into the immortals' tent.")
(Keane: "You think he's going to rough them up?")
(Cameron: "He'll probably do worse than just rough them up.")
(Keane: "Like what?")
(Cameron: "I don't know. All I know is that Allen always goes to the extreme. Always. Those poor bastards in that tent aren't going to like whatever's about to happen.")
The man referred to as Allen stopped in front of the tent and gestured for the guards to go in before him. They listened, and he soon followed them inside.
Keane wondered what would transpire in there. Perhaps he would never know. Though he was curious, he wouldn't dare approached anywhere near Allen. He feared him, like he feared no other. The new immortal was doomed. That much was certain.
