Sasuke returned to the academy building with calm steps and eyes ever-watchful, even in a simple situation like this one. Upon reaching the classroom, he noticed that only Sakura was there, absorbed in a book. When he entered, she looked up and smiled upon seeing him.
— Sasuke! — Sakura greeted, with contained excitement.
Sasuke simply nodded in response, keeping a tranquil expression. He understood that, to his classmates, he should act like the serious, slightly distant young man they all knew.
— Sakura — he greeted her with a brief nod.
Sakura, pleased to have Sasuke's attention for a moment, began talking about the team formation and how excited she was to see what Kakashi-sensei, the renowned jonin leading their team, had planned for them.
Before the conversation could continue, hurried footsteps sounded from the hallway, and Naruto burst through the door, breathing heavily as if he had run the entire way.
— Ah, finally found you guys! — Naruto exclaimed, a satisfied smile on his face upon seeing Sasuke and Sakura.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow as Naruto made his usual ruckus. Without wasting time, he decided to intervene, making his expectations clear.
— Relax, you two — Sasuke said, his voice firm and controlled. — Kakashi has a reputation for always being late.
Naruto looked at him, curious.
— Oh, really? That guy has some nerve! I was ready for anything... but not to be waiting around for someone who doesn't even know punctuality!
Sasuke just shrugged, not responding. He knew discussing Kakashi's tardiness was a waste of time. Besides, he'd already heard rumors that the famous Kakashi was a skilled ninja but had an annoying tendency to be late.
The three then began to wait. Minutes passed, followed by more minutes... then an hour. Naruto began to grumble, unable to contain his frustration. Sasuke, on the other hand, remained seated, eyes closed and mind serene. He used the time to reflect on the day's training and on the potential ways that this new team, led by a famous jonin, could help him develop his skills and achieve his goal.
Finally, after two hours of waiting, the door opened with a soft sound, and a figure entered. It was Kakashi Hatake, the long-awaited sensei of Team 7. He entered the room casually, hands in his pockets and an indifferent expression.
— Yo! — Kakashi greeted casually, as if he hadn't kept them waiting.
Naruto immediately jumped up, indignation written all over his face.
— TWO HOURS! Do you realize how irritating that was?! — he shouted, gesturing energetically while staring at Kakashi.
Kakashi just watched him, unhurried, as if Naruto's outburst was just another part of his day. Then, after a brief pause, he let slip an unexpected statement:
— I hate you three.
Silence filled the room. Sakura, Naruto, and even Sasuke stared at him with a mix of surprise and confusion. Kakashi, however, remained impassive.
— Huh? What do you mean, you hate us?! — Naruto exclaimed, crossing his arms and narrowing his eyes at Kakashi. — You barely know us!
Kakashi just shook his head and motioned for them to follow him.
— Follow me to the academy rooftop. — he said calmly, ignoring Naruto's protests.
At first, Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto exchanged glances, unsure of what to expect. However, Sasuke was the first to get up, not asking any questions. He already had a feeling that this wouldn't be an ordinary introduction, especially since Kakashi didn't seem like any ordinary sensei.
Sakura and Naruto followed Sasuke through the building until they finally reached the top of the academy. The breeze was gentle up there, and the view extended over the whole village—a scene that, for Sasuke, brought a mixture of tranquility and memories. Kakashi was already waiting, observing them with a calm yet critical gaze.
— Alright, now that everyone is here — Kakashi began, with his usual light tone — we can introduce ourselves.
He paused for a moment as if trying to decide what to say. Finally, he raised his hand, as though he had already defined his own introduction.
— I'm Kakashi Hatake, the leader of Team 7. I have interests... and some hobbies. But you don't need to know much more about me. — Kakashi said, with a carefree tone. — Now, it's your turn.
Naruto was the first to react, as usual, eager and impulsive.
— I'm Naruto Uzumaki! I'm going to become Hokage, the greatest of all ninjas! And, uh, my hobby is eating ramen! I like training too!
Kakashi just nodded, with a slightly bored expression, though Sasuke noticed a flicker of interest in the sensei's eyes.
Sakura, standing next to him, cleared her throat timidly before beginning her introduction, avoiding direct eye contact with Sasuke as she spoke.
— I'm Sakura Haruno. My interests… — she blushed a little, looking away. — Well, I like studying and spending time with my friends.
Kakashi nodded, making no comment. Finally, he looked at Sasuke, who maintained his calm and determined posture. Though he appeared to be just a serious young genin on the outside, his military mind was already assessing Kakashi's behavior, trying to learn more about him through subtle gestures.
— My name is Sasuke Uchiha — he said, voice firm and controlled. — I don't have many interests, just one goal. I want to get stronger to achieve what I need.
Kakashi raised an eyebrow, expression unchanged, but Sasuke knew he had captured his attention. The Uchiha could feel Kakashi's gaze weighing on him, as if he was evaluating each word, every movement.
With the introductions complete, Kakashi stepped back and crossed his arms.
— Alright — he said, his tone more serious this time. — Tomorrow, we'll have our first team test. You'll have the chance to show me if you have what it takes to become real ninjas.
Naruto, as expected, couldn't contain his curiosity.
— Test? But we just graduated! Isn't that what we did in the academy?
Kakashi looked at him calmly, though his eyes showed a hint of severity.
— Oh, but this test is different. It's a survival test. — he said, with a slight ironic tone. — It's harder than anything you've done in the academy. Oh, and you'll want a good breakfast... or maybe not. Who knows, maybe it's better if you go hungry.
Naruto's eyes widened.
— What are you talking about?! Survival test? — he asked, his voice slightly trembling.
Kakashi just smiled, a smile that revealed nothing but a slight challenge.
— Just be ready for what's to come. If you really want to become ninjas, you'll have to pass this. — Kakashi finished, then disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
Naruto stood still, staring at the empty space where Kakashi had been, while Sakura watched Naruto's nervous expression. Sasuke, on the other hand, simply absorbed the information, considering what it meant. He knew that, to stand out, he'd have to give his all, and he was ready for whatever awaited him.
With thoughts focused on what was to come, Team 7 descended from the academy rooftop. Naruto grumbled about Kakashi's lack of clarity, while Sakura tried to calm him down, reminding him that they'd need to be at the designated location the next day.
Sasuke, however, remained silent, internally determined to excel in this test and showcase the worth of his abilities. After all, for someone like him, each new challenge was just another chance to get closer to his goal.
