Chapitre 14: ► Uninvited company Part 1◄
The clouds have now given way to a clear sky with warm rays of sunshine showering them. 'It's time to head home, don't you think?' Vox suggested. 'Yeah. The others must be worried.' Shoto agreed. So they started their way back home.
When they reached the river, they saw that the boulders were now completely wet from the rain. 'It seems to be more dangerous than before. We are bound to fall...' Vox realised. 'That's true. But, it's the only way to cross this river...' Shoto frowned. 'Hm. Okay, let's try. But we need to watch out.' Vox said. Shoto nodded and took the lead. He hopped from one boulder to the next with Vox once again right behind him. They both slightly sled across the stone surface with each jump. Shoto paused in front of the 6 meter gap where he nearly fell, the last time he tried jumping over it. He took a deep breath and took a big leap across the gap. When he landed, he slipped slightly, but managed to catch himself. Then he turned around to watch Vox's attempt to jump over. He had no problem, jumping to the next boulder, but as he landed, he also slipped and was about to fall into the river. 'Watch out!' Shoto shouted, before he grabbed his hand and pulled Vox towards him. He also lost his footing and they fell to the ground. Vox was lying on top of him with his head next to the purplette's. As he heard groaning under him, he quickly recovered form the fall and raised his head to look straight into Shoto's eyes. 'Are you alright? Did you hurt your head?' Vox asked concerned. 'N-No. I'm fine.' The other answered. They both went silent while staring into each other's eyes. To them it seemed like time had stopped. The only sound they could perceive, was the sound of rushing water around them. Their minds went blank as their gaze moved to each other's lips. Without realizing, their heads moved closer and closer. They could now feel their heavy breath in each other's face as they were about to kiss. But suddenly, Vox's attention switched to something else. He raised his head to look around. 'Someone is coming. They have mages in their group. I can feel magic energy approaching' Vox whispered and stood up while reaching out his hand to Shoto. Shoto, who had no time to be flustered took the other's hand and also got up. Then he reached for his dagger. 'It seems like there are also some demons in the group.' He added. Vox's attention was now back to Shoto. 'How do you know that?' He asked curiously. 'I'll tell you later. Let's get to the other side first. It would be bad if we had to fight in this position.' The other stated with a slight frown. Vox nodded and waited for Shoto to jump over the last few boulders and followed after him.
Upon arriving on the other side of the river, Shoto turned back to face Vox. 'I'll use my earrings to get closer to them. Can you try diverting their attention? We need to first find out, how many enemies we are going to face.' He calmly said. 'I should be able to do that. But, you have to be careful. Remember, you can still be hit even if you are invisible.' Vox cautioned. The other gave him a smile and disappeared just like in the treasury. This is fascinating, no matter how often I see it. Vox thought.
Shoto slowly advanced forward while observing his surroundings. His dagger was getting hotter by the second as he continued, so he prepared himself while clenching his hand around it. Suddenly, he heard people approaching. Although they tried to be as silent as possible, they were still pretty clumsy. 'Hey kid, are you sure, they are somewhere around here?' Someone asked in a squeaky voice. 'Ye-Yes. Th-They must be close. But I can only feel one person. It's like they other one just disappeared' a child's voice answered in a frightened tone. 'Haaa. You shitting me brat? How is that even possible?' another man shouted menacingly. He sounded more like a thug than an elite assassin. 'I-I'm not lying. It can mean two things. Either they split up and the other one went too far away for my tracking magic to reach or he is d-d-dead' the child whimpered. 'Well, that makes it easier for us' the squeaky voice sneered. 'But, if you are lying, you know what will happen to your little friend here' a woman's voice threatened. 'I- I promise. It's the truth. Please don't hurt my little snowball!' the child pleaded. I guess this confirms my earrings' powers. Shoto thought. Then he decided to see who those voices belonged to. As he peeked from behind a tree, he saw a small man with a beard and a big nose; a big and muscular man with a scar across his face; a little girl with long, ruffled hair which obviously didn't get any care for some time now; and a woman his height with horns coming out of her head. She was holding something that looked like a brown fur ball with a feather growing from it's head. That must be 'snowball'. I never saw anything like it. Shoto thought to himself in wonder. He decided to let them pass and follow right after them. It was up to Vox to distract them so that he could save snowball and separate the girl from the group. He was reluctant to kill them because of the child. So it was his only plan at the moment.
