The first several hours of the carriage ride passed in relative quiet. By the time the sun had reached midday, the young woman had recovered enough that they were able to stop for an outdoor picnic.

To Wu Ling's eyes, Su Xiang was still dipped in a wash of gray paint but the recovery of her body had helped the sickly painful yellow-green and orange colors to fade. Still, he wasn't willing to leave her in such a horrible state any longer than he could help it. As soon as he'd changed into more masculine attire and removed what had passed for a disguise he joined Su Xiang and Alchemist Huang's midday meal.
