He threw himself to Gerald with all the force he could muster. The chair was facing the other when he did. So, when he hit Gerald, the chair was the first one that came into contact with the other. 

Because of the force and add to Gerald's size, the chair broke easily. The impact hurt every muscle in Noa's body. But he didn't care. He quickly picked up a piece of the broken wood and stabbed it towards Gerald.
