100% The Hidden King: Reincarnated as Cid Kageno / Chapter 8: ch8 - First Steps of the Shadow Lord

Chapitre 8: ch8 - First Steps of the Shadow Lord

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in hues of deep orange and violet as night began to fall. The shadows lengthened across the cobblestone streets of Midgar, the capital city of the kingdom. It was the kind of evening that marked the transition from the bustling activity of the day to the quiet stillness of the night. To most, it was a time to relax, to retreat into the safety of their homes. But for Cid Kageno, it was an opportunity.

For months, he had been laying the groundwork for his grand vision, the creation of Shadow Garden. His recruits were growing stronger by the day, and the legend of Shadow, the mysterious leader who operated from the darkness, was slowly taking shape. But Cid knew that strength alone wasn't enough to achieve his goals. If he was going to dismantle the Diabolos Cult and control events from the shadows, he needed something more. He needed to hone his tactical skills, learning to manipulate the world around him without ever being seen.

Tonight, he would take his first steps toward mastering the art of manipulation. It was time to test his ability to control events behind the scenes to move the pieces on the board without anyone realizing he was the one pulling the strings.

---

One of Cid's greatest strengths was his ability to blend in, to disappear into the background without drawing attention. He had spent months perfecting his facade as a nobody, a background character that no one would ever suspect of being involved in anything significant. But tonight, he would need to do more than simply remain unnoticed. He needed to manipulate.

As he walked through the dimly lit streets of Midgar, Cid's mind raced with possibilities. There were countless factions in the city; nobles, merchants, underground organizations, and, of course, the ever-present Diabolos Cult. All of them were connected by invisible threads of power, influence, and money. If Cid was going to manipulate them, he needed to start small, planting seeds of discord and doubt that would grow over time.

He stopped at the edge of a bustling marketplace, his eyes scanning the crowd. He wasn't looking for anything in particular, just observing, studying the flow of people and the subtle power dynamics at play. The merchants shouted their wares, the nobles strolled through with their noses in the air, and the commoners haggled for better prices. It was a complex web of interactions, each person playing their part in the larger machine that was Midgar's economy.

But there, amidst the chaos, Cid spotted something interesting, a minor noble flanked by two guards, negotiating with a merchant over a shipment of exotic spices. The noble's name was Lord Regulus, a man of little importance in the grand scheme of things, but well-connected enough to be useful. Cid had heard rumors that Regulus was in debt, his family fortune dwindling due to poor financial decisions and gambling. He was desperate, and desperation made people malleable.

Perfect.

---

Cid approached the scene quietly, making sure to remain just outside the noble's line of sight. He didn't need to interact directly; he just needed to influence the situation. He watched carefully as the conversation between Regulus and the merchant grew heated, with the noble insisting on a lower price for the spices while the merchant stubbornly refused.

It was a simple disagreement, the kind that happened a thousand times a day in the marketplace. But to Cid, it was an opportunity.

He stepped closer, subtly activating his shadow magic to blend into the background, making himself nearly invisible. No one would notice him as he positioned himself behind the merchant, leaning in just enough to overhear their conversation.

Regulus was growing more frustrated by the minute, his face flushed with anger. "You don't understand," he hissed, keeping his voice low so the nearby guards wouldn't overhear. "I need these spices, and I need them at the price we discussed. My entire shipment is riding on this deal!"

The merchant, a stout man with a thick beard, crossed his arms defiantly. "And I'm telling you, the price has gone up. I don't care about your shipment. If you can't pay, find another supplier."

Cid's lips curved into a small, satisfied smile. Desperation was the perfect tool for manipulation.

Carefully, Cid slipped a small, enchanted coin from his pocket. It was an ordinary copper coin, but infused with a subtle illusion spell. He held it between his fingers and whispered a few quiet words, directing the spell toward Regulus's mind.

Moments later, the noble's eyes glazed over slightly, his anger momentarily giving way to confusion. He blinked, his gaze shifting to the merchant, and then to the guards standing nearby.

"I don't have time for this," Regulus muttered under his breath. "I'll… I'll take the spices at your price."

The merchant raised an eyebrow, surprised by the sudden change in tone, but he shrugged and nodded. "Smart decision, my lord."

As Regulus and the merchant concluded their transaction, Cid faded further into the shadows, his mind already spinning with the possibilities. The coin's illusion spell had planted a subtle suggestion in Regulus's mind a seed of doubt and unease. Over time, that seed would grow, making the noble more susceptible to Cid's influence in the future. He would question his decisions, his allies, and ultimately, his own sanity.

It was a small victory, but it was exactly the kind of manipulation Cid needed to practice. The key wasn't in grand gestures or obvious schemes. It was in subtlety, in controlling events from the periphery, never revealing his hand.

---

The more Cid practiced his craft, the more he realized just how intricate the web of power and influence in Midgar truly was. The noble families were constantly vying for control, each one trying to outmaneuver the others in a never-ending game of politics and wealth. The merchants, meanwhile, had their own networks of trade and commerce, each one trying to maintain a foothold in the city's competitive markets.

And then there were the underground organizations; thieves, assassins, information brokers. These were the people who truly understood how to navigate the shadows. They were Cid's natural allies, though none of them knew it yet. He would need to manipulate them carefully, ensuring that they believed they were acting of their own accord when, in reality, they were playing right into his hands.

Over the next few weeks, Cid continued his work behind the scenes, slowly building his influence in the city. He planted rumors, spread false information, and manipulated small-time players into making moves that would ultimately benefit his plans. He watched as rival merchants sabotaged each other's shipments, as minor nobles grew increasingly paranoid about their standing at court, and as underground operatives unknowingly carried out tasks that furthered his goals.

It was all part of his larger strategy, laying the groundwork for Shadow Garden to expand its influence. If he could manipulate these smaller players now, it would make it that much easier to control the larger pieces on the board later.

---

But for all the progress Cid had made, there was still one piece of the puzzle that remained elusive: the Diabolos Cult. He knew they were a powerful and dangerous organization, one that operated in the shadows just as he did. But they were also secretive, and their influence ran deep. He needed more information, he needed to understand how the Cult operated, who their leaders were, and what their ultimate goals were.

Fortunately, Cid had a lead.

In his weeks of observing the city's underbelly, Cid had discovered that one of the Diabolos Cult's minor operatives, a man named Harlin, was in charge of managing some of their lesser-known activities in Midgar. Harlin wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, but he was a useful connection, a thread that could lead Cid to more significant targets.

And tonight, Cid planned to pull that thread.

---

Under the cover of night, Cid moved through the winding streets of the capital, his form shrouded in shadow. He had spent weeks observing Harlin's routine, noting every detail of his movements, his habits, and his contacts. Tonight, the man was meeting with a low-level smuggler in a rundown tavern on the edge of the city.

Cid slipped into the tavern unnoticed, his shadow magic keeping him hidden from view. He spotted Harlin immediately, a wiry man with a nervous demeanor, sitting at a corner table with a drink in hand. His contact had yet to arrive, giving Cid the perfect opportunity.

Without a sound, Cid approached the table, his form barely visible in the dim light of the tavern. He extended a tendril of shadow magic, wrapping it around Harlin's ankle and pulling him into the shadows before the man could even react.

Moments later, they were in an alley behind the tavern, Harlin pinned against the wall by Cid's shadowy tendrils, his eyes wide with fear.

"W-What... what is this?!" Harlin stammered, his voice trembling.

Cid stepped closer, his face hidden beneath the hood of his cloak. "You work for the Diabolos Cult," he said, his voice low and calm. "You're going to tell me everything you know

."

Harlin's eyes darted around, searching for a way out, but the shadows held him tight. "I.. I don't know anything important! I swear, I'm just a small-time guy! They don't tell me anything!"

Cid's gaze darkened. He didn't have time for lies. "You're lying," he said, his voice cold. "And if you keep lying, this will end very badly for you."

Harlin swallowed hard, his fear palpable. "Okay! Okay! I'll tell you! Just.... just don't kill me!"

Cid remained silent, waiting for the man to spill what he knew.

"They've... they've got a base," Harlin stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's not far from here, just outside the city. They're experimenting on people... trying to turn them into monsters. That's all I know, I swear!"

Cid's eyes narrowed. This was exactly the kind of information he had been looking for. The Diabolos Cult's experiments were one of the biggest threats to the kingdom, and now he had a lead on one of their bases.

"Good," Cid said, his voice calm. "Now, here's what you're going to do. You're going to keep working for the Cult, but you're going to feed them the information I give you. Understand?"

Harlin nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes, whatever you say!"

With a final flick of his wrist, Cid released Harlin from the shadows, watching as the man collapsed to the ground, trembling with fear.

"Remember," Cid said quietly, his voice like a whisper in the night. "You work for me now. If you betray me… you won't live to regret it."

And with that, Cid disappeared into the shadows, leaving Harlin shaking and alone in the alley.

---

As Cid made his way back through the city, his mind was already racing with possibilities. Harlin's information would allow him to strike at the heart of the Diabolos Cult's operations in Midgar. But more than that, it marked the first real step in his larger plan.

By manipulating Harlin, Cid had successfully infiltrated the Cult's ranks without them ever suspecting. He could now control the flow of information, subtly steering events to his advantage without ever revealing his hand.

This was the power of the shadows. The power of manipulation.

And it was only the beginning.

---

Back at the hidden base of Shadow Garden, Cid met with Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, briefing them on the night's events. The recruits listened intently, their eyes filled with admiration and awe as Cid explained how he had manipulated Harlin into becoming an unwilling informant.

"You see," Cid said, his voice calm but commanding, "we don't need to fight every battle directly. Sometimes, the best way to win is to control the battlefield without ever stepping onto it."

Alpha nodded, her expression serious. "You're teaching us how to fight from the shadows. How to manipulate events without revealing ourselves."

Cid smiled faintly. "Exactly. This is how we'll win. Not with brute force, but with intelligence, subtlety, and control. We'll be the unseen hand that guides the world."

The recruits exchanged glances, their admiration for Cid growing even stronger. To them, Shadow wasn't just a leader, he was a mastermind, a visionary who saw the world in ways they couldn't even begin to understand.

And that was exactly what Cid wanted.

As the night deepened and the shadows gathered around them, Cid knew that he had taken his first real steps toward becoming the Shadow Lord. He had learned to manipulate events from behind the scenes, to control the flow of information and power without ever being seen.

But this was only the beginning. There were still countless battles to be fought, countless enemies to outmaneuver.

And from the shadows, Cid would be the one pulling the strings.
