Chapitre 38: First Chamber — Waiting Room

Cedric wasted no time entering the second floor. He realized that the crocodile had been the first floor's boss monster, which explained the difference in their levels. His victory over the monster had not been an honorable one, but Cedric had to do what he could to survive.

[You have entered the 2nd Floor of Wraithshade Dungeon.]

After opening the door at the end of the stairs, Cedric found a small room with a bed, a desk, and a table with steamy food. His brows furrowed as he looked around the room, finding no monsters. In front of the door was a wall that supported the bed and the desk. Above those two were the following words:

"First Chamber – Waiting Room"

Cedric was confused as he let go of the handle, and the door creaked shut behind him. His Observe Skill told him that there were no monsters in this room and that the door on the other end was locked.

"Not even traps?" muttered Cedric as he looked around the room and found nothing that made him suspect a thing. Other than the everyday items, he could only see a small air vent. "Am I supposed to find a way out? Or should I just wait?"

Cedric walked toward the door and tried to force his way through using his sword. However, the door was made of iron and had three separate locks. As much as Cedric wanted to believe in himself, he couldn't slash this door apart.

Although the room wanted him to wait, Cedric could not trust something this summoner had designed. He activated his narrator and got the truth about this room.

[The air vent is leaking poison.]

Cedric smiled as he stared at the small air vent. If someone entered this place after a long battle against the crocodile, they would be inclined to rest for a little. His true enemy was the door before him. As long as he broke through the door before the poison killed him, he would pass.

[You have summoned Shade (Level 21)]

The cat appeared before him again, looking around in confusion. Cedric allowed it to rest while he traveled around and would only summon it when needed. After exchanging a glance with Cedric, it understood the idea.

Shade channeled lightning into its horns before firing it at the door. The lightning struck the heavy metal door, exploding at the point of impact. A small dent appeared that looked orange and radiated intense heat, with a circle of soot surrounding it.

Cedric frowned when he realized that the attack barely made a dent in the door. Shade seemed pissed and channeled another bolt of lightning. It struck the door again, but the result was the same.

The iron door began to mend back to its original form after a few seconds. This confirmed Cedric's suspicion that this was the obstacle he had to overcome on this floor. Instead of letting Shade waste its mana, which he believed to be the objective of this chamber, he stopped it and thought of a different plan.

"I can use Lesser Summon to find a monster that would work better against it," muttered Cedric as he began to channel his mana. His mana pool had already increased to 41, which meant he could use the skill four times.

A summoning circle appeared on the ground, and Cedric saw a shadow rise from within. As the monster materialized into their world, Cedric realized that it wasn't what he needed at the moment.

[You have summoned Armored Golem (Level 25)]

The golem rose from the ground, excited to be a part of this adventure. Unlike before, the monster did not attempt to break free from his contract because Cedric had already invested one point from reaching level 21 into Link. Cedric felt bad, but he had to dismiss the monster before its duration ended.

"As you can see, I need a monster that can break through this door," explained Cedric while patting the golem. "It's not about you, really. It's about what I need," he consoled the dejected monster, who raised its spear nonetheless.

Cedric sighed and stepped aside. The golem tried to break through the door with its spear, even using it as a lever. Shade stared from the side, its gaze aloof and mocking. Out of curiosity, Cedric activated the narrator for a few seconds.

[Shade found Cedric to be rude, given its strength and inability to break the door. "What can a weaker monster do other than waste your mana?" thought the aloof cat.]

"You are looking down on me rather than it?" muttered Cedric as he felt his blood pressure rise. The golem was still attempting to break through the door, but Cedric could not embarrass himself anymore. After thanking the golem for its service, Cedric unsummoned it.

Lesser Summon created another magic circle under the mocking gaze of Shade, while Cedric felt a little nervous. Although it was stronger than any other monster, since her mana was already in the hundreds, he still wanted to humble her.

[You have summoned Ice Spirit (Level 20)]

The spirit appeared, looking like a small blue sphere rather than an actual ghost. Cedric could feel Shade smirking at him, but he already knew that he had won this contest. He commanded the spirit to freeze the door, and it passed through the door several times.

Each time, the door froze more, until it was frozen solid. Cedric would not be able to open the door even if he had the keys. The spirit still worked to freeze the door while he looked around.

The bed, table, and desk were empty. There was nothing except for the food on the table, which Cedric knew to be poisoned as well. In order to test out the effect of the poison, he decided to open his status menu and see how much health he had lost.

[Health: 233/240]

It had been a few minutes since he entered this place. The poison was weak, but it had no smell and acted as a gas. This was a vile trap even for a summoner to use.

"Pew!" cried the spirit before it disappeared, having exhausted its mana. If not for Shade having the passive skill, Mana Amplification, it would have met the same fate. Cedric looked at the door and found it had turned into an ice wall.

Shade stared at him, awaiting his next move just to mock him. Cedric commanded it to shoot lightning now. The cat was confused but did as it was told, and the lightning struck the door four times. The ice melted, and the sudden shift in temperature made the door crack.

The hinges snapped and the door came crashing down. Cedric gave Shade a victorious grin but found her giving him a condescending look. She walked through the doors while Cedric stood speechless. He didn't need the narrator to tell him that Shade believed herself to be the victor here.

Cedric had to admit that among every summoned creature in the universe, Shade had to be the cockiest. In the end, he followed after her into the dim corridor that led them to their next chamber.

Of course, he had to avoid the traps. A door awaited them at the end of the corridor, with two words written on it:

"Second Chamber — Shadow Knight"

Cedric opened the door and found a dim courtroom that had witnessed the passage of time. Its banners were torn, pillars were shattered, and the ground was covered with moss. Inside the courtroom stood a single knight of shadows.

[Shadow Knight (Level 30)]

The knight turned to face Cedric, its eerie hollow eyes digging into his soul. It raised a sword, preparing for their inevitable fight, but Cedric knew that this monster was not something he could face. Nine levels separated the two, but Cedric had Shade and another monster to aid him.

"This should be fun," muttered Cedric as he used the skill Lesser Summon to call another monster to aid him. Shade flapped its wings while staring at the creature with apprehension. "How should I defeat you then?"
