It had been a week since vacation started. The boys had gone their separate ways, each returning to their respective homes. Those who lived nearby occasionally trained together. Well, except for Nie Li and Zhang Ming, who couldn't make it to the sessions.
Over at the Wei family estate, the afternoon was bustling with energy as the family's youngest prodigy sparred with one of his older cousins.
Wei Nan, standing at nearly half the height of his cousin Wei Lu, didn't let that stop him. His attacks came down with an overwhelming force from above, defying expectations.
"HAH!" Wei Nan shouted as he leapt, attempting to bring his older cousin crashing to the ground.
Wei Lu, a Bronze Rank 5-star demon spiritualist, grit his teeth as he defended himself. The kid's attacks were terrifying. Even using both arms, he couldn't completely block them. With each strike, his feet sank deeper into the makeshift battleground. They danced across the arena, Wei Nan's focused expression clashing with Wei Lu's frustrated grimace as the older boy struggled to land a single hit.
"DAD, GET ME OUT OF HERE! I GIVE UP, OKAY?!" Wei Lu cried out to Wei Yuhao, flinching as another punch from his little cousin nearly brought him to his knees.
"NO EXCUSES, LU! Your cousin's just a kid—at least give him a proper fight!" Wei Yuhao, the patriarch of the Wei family and not just Wei Nan's uncle but also Wei Lu's father, barked at his son.
Wei Lu groaned and tried to rally himself for another attempt. He threw a right hook.
WHOOSH
Wei Nan dodged effortlessly, sidestepping closer.
Wei Lu clenched his teeth and launched another punch, this time with his left.
SWOOSH
Again, Wei Nan evaded with minimal effort, leaning just enough to avoid the blow. Then, with a deadly calm, he unleashed a powerful uppercut aimed at his cousin's chest. Wei Lu crossed his arms in an X to block, but the force still sent him soaring several feet into the air.
The crowd watching from the sidelines was stunned silent as Wei Nan tracked his cousin's trajectory with laser focus. If Wei Lu attempted any counterattack, Wei Nan would be ready.
But as usual, Wei Nan was being overly cautious.
THUD
Wei Lu landed flat on his back, wheezing as he rolled on the ground. His hands clutched his chest as if the punch had welded them there.
"AND THE WINNER IS WEI NAN!" Wei Ryong, a second cousin of Wei Nan, announced loudly, signaling the end of the "friendly" match.
The audience, initially indifferent to the idea of watching such young fighters, erupted in cheers and applause.
"HAHAHA! Told you, brother—my son's amazing!" Wei Nan's father laughed heartily, slapping Wei Yuhao on the back.
A vein visibly bulged on the patriarch's forehead as he stood, clearly annoyed. "Stop whining, Lu! Get up already! Maybe if you cut that ridiculous fringe, you could've seen the punches coming!" He started berating his son, who was still sprawled on the ground.
Everyone laughed. It was true—Wei Lu's long bangs had gotten in his way more than once during the fight. But why would he cut them? He wasn't trying to be a warrior or a fighter. Combat had never been one of his aspirations. Clicking his tongue in frustration, he struggled to his feet.
"Thanks for the fight, big brother Lu." Wei Nan approached and bowed politely.
Wei Lu was taken aback. He had been dominated the entire match, mocked, and looked down on by everyone. Yet Wei Nan hadn't once seen him as a weak opponent or someone to pity. During the fight, Wei Lu had wondered if the fiery-haired kid could have gone easier on him, shown more respect for his elders. Now, he understood: not holding back was Wei Nan's way of showing respect.
Smiling at the thought, Wei Lu grasped Wei Nan's outstretched hand and used it to stand. Dusting himself off, he said, "You were great, little Nan. But don't let it go to your head, alright? Big Bro Lu was taking it easy on you! Keep working hard so we can have a real fight someday."
Some in the crowd rolled their eyes at Wei Lu's overconfidence, while others caught the genuine sentiment behind his words. Wei Nan wasn't one of them.
"OKAY! I promise to keep working hard!" the red-haired boy shouted enthusiastically, completely buying into Wei Lu's claim. The older cousin winced but didn't correct him, walking away with a sheepish grin.
Soon, the family members gathered around Wei Nan, showering him with praise. From the youngest kids to the elders, everyone seemed impressed. Yet, all Wei Nan could say was, "It's all thanks to my friends!" or "I'm so grateful for my friends!" He refused to take credit, which only made his family respect him even more.
A few hours later, after giving a martial arts lesson to the younger kids in the family, Wei Nan returned home drenched in sweat.
As soon as he opened the door, his older sister threw herself at him.
"AHHH! Weizy, you're the best!"
"Hey, hey, let me go! I'm all sweaty!" Wei Nan protested, trying to escape her embrace. But the strength of a Silver Rank was too much for him.
"Doesn't matter—you're always my sweet-smelling little brother!" she teased, taking a deep whiff of his damp hair.
Wei Nan cringed in disgust and finally managed to wriggle free, bolting toward his room while his sister called after him from downstairs.
After a refreshing shower, Wei Nan crept toward his room, walking as quietly as possible to avoid alerting his sister. Peeking around every corner, he finally reached his door and sighed in relief as he turned the handle.
But the moment he stepped inside, a startling sight awaited him.
"BROTHER?!" he exclaimed, his voice echoing through the room.
Perched on the windowsill, wearing a blue vest and a flowing cloak swaying in the wind, was none other than his eldest brother, Wei Xae. With a refined air that set him apart from the rest of the family, Wei Xae hadn't visited in ages—not since marrying a lady from one of the great families.
"Hello, little Nan," Wei Xae greeted in a deep, melodic voice.
"B-B-BUT... uh, I mean—what brings the great eldest brother back to our humble home?" Wei Nan stammered, quickly switching to a more formal tone, as if afraid of offending him.
"Why else would I be here? To celebrate my little brother's success, of course! It's not every day someone from our family shows such incredible talent." Wei Xae's smile was warm and genuine.
"Ah-ah, yes, but know that none of this was achieved alone! It's all thanks to Nie Li, who gave me the technique, Zhu Xiangju, who helped me train my physical skills, and all the sparring and training I did with everyone else!" The boy spoke with almost childish enthusiasm.
Wei Xae chuckled softly—not out of mockery, but joy.
"It seems you've found good friends, haven't you?" The older brother said, wiping a tear from his eye after laughing.
"Without a doubt! I owe everything I've achieved to them!" Wei Nan said with a broad grin.
His brother returned the smile and said:
"I'm sure they feel the same way about you, my little Nan."
After their brief conversation, Wei Xae departed but not before gifting Wei Nan an interspatial ring filled with a variety of training resources and a complete Silver Rank armor set. Wei Nan accepted everything with a wide grin and gave his older brother a tight hug as they said goodbye.
The rest of the night was peaceful, and another morning dawned over Glory City.
As always, Wei Nan woke up with the first rays of sunlight streaming through his window. Stretching on his bed, he quickly sat up and began meditating to enhance his Soul Force. Among his group, this had always been his weakest point, and his physical strength wasn't all that impressive compared to the others. There was no time to waste!
"Weizy…" A voice called out to him from nowhere, startling him so much he nearly fell out of bed. Looking down at the foot of his bed, he saw his sister sitting on the floor, watching him.
"SISTER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT DO YOU WANT?" He shouted at her. While they didn't exactly get along badly, she smothered him too much.
"Oh, what's with all the shouting… I'm just here to let you know that someone's at the door asking for you."
"Ah-ah, thank you. But couldn't you have called me in a less… bizarre way?"
"Sorry, I've actually been waiting here for half an hour already, but you just looked so adorable while you were sleeping, hehe," the girl said in a disturbingly sweet yet creepy tone, a trail of saliva slipping from her mouth.
Wei Nan recoil in sheer disgust and immediately tell her to leave.
Quickly donning his outfit, not forgetting to put on his Silver Rank armor underneath, Wei Nan hurried downstairs.
A commotion could be heard coming from the kitchen; his parents were speaking excitedly and bustling around.
As Wei Nan descended the stairs, he tried to catch a glimpse of who it was but only recognized them when he reached the kitchen door.
There, standing before him and conversing cordially with his parents, was none other than Shen Yue himself!
