Chapitre 8: Growing 3

Ever since he was allowed to leave the house, he began to showcase his magic talents to Willow. What started off with basic chores, quickly became Lux using first magic to help her with the jobs on their small plot of land.

A win-win situation in his books. His mother gets a break when she comes home, and he gets an excuse for why he's not got any friends his age.

Willow was a bit tentative about the whole arrangement, but after a few days off watching Lux do the work wout endangering himself. She was fine with leaving him to it while she went to work.

Though he did help out, he still wasn't allowed to slaughter the livestock, "It's not a job for children" Willow told him, making it abruptly clear that he wasn't to be doing such a thing until he was older.

Lux never got the big deal about it.

'Four, ten. What's the difference' he mentally shrugged while Willow continued to give him an earful about losing his innocence.

With all the free time away from the house, Lux's magic skills were rapidly improving. Having a space to test out theory's and extra mana courtesy of orange core, using magic has never been easier.

Whenever he got tired of casting spells, he'd practice some of the skills he learned in his previous life. Which usually meant working up a serious sweat from exerting from training his body, and building up the calluses on his abnormally smooth skin.

Being a kid and all meant his skin was smooth as shaved balls, but the recent body refinement session upped it to a whole new level. Some of his freckles disappeared and easily tangled hair became marginally more manageable.

Overall the refinement brought a considerable aesthetic change.

He still wasn't used to having longer hair though. From the day he joined the army till the day he died, he was rocking a short back and sides, so being able to run his finger through his hair was a comical experience.

Still wasn't a fan of the white streaks, he thought it made him look like a twat. Having the majority of his hair being the color black never helped with making the streaks stand out less either.

His mother begged to differ, she thought it made him look handsome. But if there's one thing you never listen to your mum about, it's fashion sense. You could leave the house wearing socks and sandals and they'd still say you look good.

The boys in the unit would've had some laugh if they saw how he looked now.

Sighing at the memory of his friends, he left the farmland and headed for the mountains to expand his lab further.

At this point, it was cheek to call it a lab. More like a dimly lit cave man's home but with time it'd get there.

With fusion magic, he arrived at his lab in no time. Unlike before, he never had to stop and use invigoration to regenerate his mana, he managed to make it to the cliff with mana to spare in his deep orange core.

Fusing himself with water magic, Lux slipped through the crevice that led him to the lab. Entering the familiar room filled with darkness, Lux snapped his fingers to change the brightness, the rudimental torches stuck to the walls flickered to life as fire magic coated them with flames.

Now that vision was restored, Lux could clearly make out the improved facilities. Unlike before, the lab no longer looked like an ancient human living space turned bats roost, now the floor and walls were smoothed out and the text that covered the walls was taken down, leaving only torches to decorate the limestone.

Lux decided to remove the engraved stone and keep them stored in one of the new rooms he made deeper underground.

To reach the innermost room, Lux had to climb down the featureless steps that led downwards to the different levels. He wasn't even sure what he was going to use half these rooms for, it's not as if he had anything to keep in them.

No like it matters really, he's got nothing better to be doing and making the rooms is good practice for his earth, fire and air magic.

Reaching the lowest layer, Lux was greeted with a large barely visible, partially carved out space.

As he walked into the darkness, several bright flames orbited his body illuminating his surroundings enough for him to work without resorting to night vision. In other words using fire fusion on his eyes, which allows him to turn his eyes into a pair of thermal scopes allowing him to capture infrared light.

While the flames were conjured, Lux proceeded to use earth magic to break down the stone into neatly shaped bricks, then move the newly created bricks to the corner near the exit with air magic.

The reason he was making bricks from the spare rock was to make some dosh when the next festival comes around by selling them to some of the merchants that linger around during the festivities.

How he was going to explain to his mother where he found enough stone to build a new village was a question for a later date.

It was a good system that got him used to triple casting, and helped with fine tuning his control over the elements. He could take it further once he became competent at using three elements at once before upping it to four.

The constant use of magic and the heavy focus it required took a toll on Lux, forcing him to take several breaks while working to use invigoration.

By the end of the day Lux had managed to finish another room and he could feel himself slowly getting used to triple casting.

When he got back to his house his mother was cooking the dinner, while stirring whatever was in the pot she began speaking, "So I met with Miss Barend today."

Collapsing into one of the seats round the table, Lux responded with a tilt of the head and a "Who?"

"You know her. She's the healer lady you met on the darkest day last year." Willow said, jogging his memory and helping him recall the bland looking, middle aged lady.

"Oh her, I remember now. I never realised you two talked much." He replied.

"We don't. We hardly cross paths outside the festival." Willow told him, sending Lux for a loop as to why she went to meet with her in the first place.

'Surely there isn't anything wrong with her. There's no way I could've missed something that the healer could've picked up.'

"But I know how much you enjoy magic. I went to ask her about giving you lessons."
