Chapitre 26: Familiar Face and Duel Against the Best Student

The figure looked a little off, very different from anyone Kai had seen inside the school.

'Should I follow this person?'

It was a difficult decision to make. While he was curious about who it was and what it was doing, Kai was also scared because it was not the first time he had seen strange movements around the school's perimeter.

Kai had told Luke about it, but nothing happened, or at least he didn't know if anything had.

'Fuck it. I need to see this.'

Shoving all fear aside, Kai slowly followed the cloaked figure through the school's courtyard, moving toward a building in a deserted part of the school.

The building looked like an abandoned watchtower used by guards. It was far from the main building, the students' and professors' dorms, and certainly far from Finley's office.

'Who is this person and why are they entering this creepy place?' Kai thought.

Fortunately, there were a few trees for Kai to hide behind, and he hoped the person hadn't noticed his presence.

After a few minutes, someone else emerged from the abandoned tower. Kai recognized the face immediately.

'That's one of the guards!'

The cloaked figure looked around to check if anyone was watching, then delivered a package to the guard, who nodded and returned to the abandoned tower. The cloaked figure then walked away and vanished.

Kai did not go after the person. It was already a miracle they hadn't spotted him, and he didn't want to push his luck. He returned to his dorm, knowing he had seen something he shouldn't have.

When he got there, Trevor was already sleeping, so Kai made sure to make as little noise as possible to avoid waking him. It took a while for Kai to fall asleep. He was constantly checking the window near his bed, scared that someone might show up.

The rest of the week was pretty normal, with nothing unusual happening. Kai was doing really well in all his classes, except Alastor's.

One of the things he was excited about was the exploration of ancient ruins. Theodore mentioned that they would be going there in two months.

"We need to wait until you know more about combat before going, just so you can defend yourself if something happens," Theodore explained, justifying the two-month timeframe.

But while that and the other classes were genuinely exciting, Alastor's class remained problematic. Kai spent hours mastering two illusion spells that should work in combat.

One was called Terror, which essentially changed the user's aura to that of a powerful individual, ideal for scaring others and avoiding a fight. The second spell was called Twisted Senses. It altered something in the adversary's brain, making it hard to coordinate the body.

When someone was under the effect of Twisted Senses, and thought about moving their body to the right, it would then move to the left, back, or front instead. It was useful for making it hard for Arcanists to draw their glyphs too.

Of course, these were only basic versions of the spells. There were much more powerful versions, but those were worlds away from Kai's current abilities. What he wanted was to use them in combat and pass Alastor's test.

The test's day finally came. Everyone thought they would need to showcase the spells in front of Alastor to pass the test, but things were more complicated than that. Alastor had something else in mind, and when he said that, a few students started shaking.

"I will be calling out two at a time to come forward and duel," Alastor said. Then he pointed at two different students, "Come."

Both students showcased their abilities with good mastery. They didn't cast the spells fast enough — Kai knew that was because they didn't practice entering their sea of consciousness often — but it was still a decent performance.

Everyone had learned their first basic spells, so Alastor passed everyone, as it was just a simple and initial test. Trevor did pretty well, even earning a few compliments from Alastor, "Your casting speed is fast, impressive."

Kai was the last one to go. Alastor did that on purpose. The students knew what was happening, and Alastor wanted to save Kai for last so everyone could see it without feeling the pressure.

The opponent was none other than Nefarios, whose main element was Lightning, and he was one of the best in the class when it came to combat. He had been taking classes about it since he was young, so his level was much higher compared to Kai.

"I'll try my best to win, so you try your best too," Nefarios said.

Nefarios knew that Kai had been facing problems learning the spells, but he still needed to pass the test, and Alastor disliked those who didn't go all out in combat. Kai was not mad about that.

The students were all watching.

"That's Kai, right? The commoner who Alastor dislikes?"

"Yep, that's him. I know he is hanging out with Nefarios for some reason, but I think he will get his ass kicked. Alastor made sure to get the best student to face him in a duel."

"Right? I feel bad for him."

The students were gossiping, but Kai ignored all of that and focused on his adversary. He had to act fast and utilize his strengths to win against Nefarios.

'My casting speed is my advantage, and I can face him using my bare hands!'

Kai had a plan in mind, and when Alastor gestured for the fight to start, Kai didn't lose a second. He first drew the glyphs for his spell called Terror, and because of his training with Jane, he cast the spell in one second!

While Nefarios was still preparing the glyphs inside his mind to cast his spell using his wand, Kai had already cast Terror and was preparing to cast his next spell!

When Nefarios felt the effects of Terror, it made it even harder for him to concentrate. The two glyphs he had drawn inside his mind crumbled into pieces, and he had to start over.

With the Twisted Senses spell taking effect right after, it made it even harder for Nefarios, who cursed under his breath, "Stop with the tricks and come fight me!"

"I will," Kai said, as he dashed toward Nefarios.

Zerin, Kai's father, had made sure to teach him hand-to-hand combat and train his body from a young age, stating how beneficial it was. Well, he was right. Kai quickly arrived in front of Nefarios and used both of his arms to grab Nefarios and throw him to the ground with a wrestling move.

A loud bang echoed through the gymnasium, and all the students watching the fight had their eyes wide open, not believing what had just happened before their eyes.
