Lux sat back in his room, staring at the most popular video of what had gone down between him and the Shura. Someone had managed to get good high-quality footage of everything that happened almost from the start. The video started with a zoomed in image of the girl that Lux had saved, dangling from a steel bar high above the ground. Then Lux showed up in his Golden armor with massive gold clad wings like an angel sent from the heavens and rescues the little girl. There was a narrator gushing throughout the entire video. And the craziest thing was that Lux hadn't realized how godsdamned heroic he looked doing what he did. Especially because where the Shura had followed him when he released the little girl in the safety of the building, there was a room behind him that he hadn't noticed while he was there, and there was like a dozen kids in there. The positioning that Lux had taken made it look like he was purposefully defending the kids that he hadn't even realized were behind him. All culminating with Lux dragging the Shura to his death. The video even capture the moment that he got ran through by the sword before cutting off because of buildings getting in the way.
Somehow, whoever made the video had discovered the tenuous link to the name Lux and the Steel Armor Shelter. Which had turned Lux into a celebrity just as he was hoping that attention on his identity would die down.
Looking over at the sword that he had taken from the Shura, Lux wondered if he should just ditch it. The thing was very recognizable with its stylized hilt and dark black blade… But he could change all of that pretty easily. Switching to a different hilt would only take a little while, and he could just get a bottle of spray paint to color it silver. Sacrilegious maybe, but it could make it so that he could use the weapon. The problem with that though was that swords are fucking stupid weapons to take into like any fight if you could take a spear. A swordsman and a spearman of equal skill and level of strength go against each other and the spearman will win nine times out of ten. The sword was a weapon designed to fight close quarters against unarmed or sword wielding foes, not against a weapon like a spear. The sword is incredibly glamorized because of ancient nobility and the inherit beauty of the weapons, not because they were actually the best weapons. The spear and the Bow would always be better than the sword. It's just a fact. Then there was the fact that swords are an even stupider weapon for hunting creatures. Like seriously, has anyone ever heard of a hunting sword? You use a spear or a bow to hunt! Sure, things are a little different when everyone is superhuman, it at least makes it viable. And sure, Lux had been using a dagger to hunt from ambushes before he had the bow, a sword would have been better than the dagger because of its greater reach. But that doesn't change the fact that it would be stupid to take a sword to hunt monsters when he already had a sacred-blood spear. All that said though… it was cool. He could be rolling around like Sephiroth. The only problem that he could truly see with using the sword was that he didn't know how to use a sword at all. It was just a sharp stick in his hands.
Shrugging to himself, Lux ordered a can of spray paint to have it delivered to his house and got to work taking the old hilt off the sword. He really didn't know what he was doing though so he looked up tutorial videos on how to remove the hilt of a sword before he succeeded.
Inside the pommel Lux discovered another item that dropped from his kill that he hadn't realized he'd received. A data chip. Lux set the chip aside until he had fully disassembled the hilt before taking measurements of the tang and base of the blade. Once he had those, Lux sent a message to the craftsman that had made his special arrows and commissioned a hilt, giving the man the specifications.
Once Lux got confirmation that the commission had been accepted, he moved on to the data chip. He plugged it in, not really expecting it to work. Would an alien flash drive run on the same drivers as human made ones? He didn't know, until he pulled up the drive and found that yes indeed, it somehow worked… which raised all sorts of questions that Lux quickly tamped down on.
Bringing up the information inside the chip Lux found that it was manual for a martial art called Bladestorm, the style of a specific aristocratic family within the Shura government. He read through it and was impressed. Though its name implied that it was a sword style or something, it was really a comprehensive martial art for anything with an edge, any blade. And you could even become so skilled with it that it could turn your nails, teeth and even different body parts you wouldn't expect into powerful cutting weapons. Elbows, knuckles, and shins could be trained to be utilized as effectively as any blade.
Lux was still wounded, but he was recovering quickly. It would probably be only a week or so before he was combat ready again. He couldn't really practice Bladestorm to its fullest, but he did what he could with it. That and practicing Jadeskin was going well.
Almost daily, Jin Beifeng would call to chat with Lux and he took those moments to relax. The sword was painted, its new hilt had been fitted onto it. And Lux was back to being ready for the hunt before he knew it. He spent several more days practicing Bladestorm, mainly because it was his only reference to how to properly use a sword never having used one before.
When Lux finally felt ready he prepared himself to get back to the 1st sanctuary and go to the Dark Swamp as he had intended. Geared up, and ready to go. Lux started heading out to the train station. He was so close to getting into the sanctuary when Qin Xuan caught him and dragged him into her office at the teleportation station.
She had him sit at her desk as she sat across from him, "Han Sen. I intend to give you a recommendation for the Blackhawk Military Academy. I want you to take the recommendation and get in."
Lux gave her a look; he didn't want to go to a military academy at all… but he would at least hear her out.
"Blackhawk Military Academy has a special quota specifically for talented archers. I believe that you fit that description, and you would benefit greatly by going." She spoke.
"I do believe that I have told you before that I have no intention of going to a military school. I'll serve my time when it comes, but I have no intention of subjecting myself to the military for any longer than I have to." Lux said.
"Well then you will be putting me in a serious bind Han Sen. Because I have already sent in the recommendation it would make me look very bad if you didn't show up to the archery test at least." Qin Xuan said gravely, there was a threatening tone in her voice that promised retribution if he dared to argue.
Lux sighed deeply, "Sell me on this military school you want me to go to. Mind you, I have family here on planet Roca. So you have to convince me that I should pick up and leave my mother and sister here on Roca as well as convince me that the benefits are actually worth it."
"Easy." Qin Xuan muttered to herself under her breath, "Blackhawk Military Academy is considered to be among the top 50 in Military Schools in the Alliance. Blackhawks facilities are state of the art, the instructors and training are top notch, and graduates are guaranteed to join as an ensign, but high performers can join as a Lieutenant right at the start. Blackhawk Military Academy also offers opportunities to earn high-end Hyper Geno Arts. You being an Archer will already put you on a short list of people who will have even greater levels of opportunity as well. You may not know this, but skilled Archers are highly sought after. Just going through the Blackhawk on the Archery billet will open doors that literally only open for that particular and rare skillset. The Academy will also help push your skills to levels that you could never get to by yourself."
Qin Xuan took a deep breath, "And as for having to leave your family here on Roca. I would say that you becoming the best that you can be will make it so that providing for your family is much more feasible. And if that still doesn't convince you, going to the Military Academy really increases the chances that you end up in a better duty station once you are in the military."
Lux stared her down as she spoke, raising an eyebrow a couple of times. Weighing the information he was getting against what he could do already. Qin Xuan made a good point though, being an archer would open doors that were quite tantalizing.
Finally, Lux nodded feeling a little resigned. Military Academy in this world wouldn't be too bad, he hoped. He would still be able to go into the sanctuary to hunt. In fact, it would be expected of him. Which really took a lot of time away from the actual schooling part.
"Well… since we were talking about archery and all that. I just wanted to warn you that after all my saving up, I've finally managed to get a beast soul bow and arrow. Both Mutant rank. I will be far more effective on hunts now." Lux manifested his bow and an arrow, "And no way in hell am I selling these until I leave the 1st Sanctuary."
Qin Xuan looked utterly stunned at the new piece of information.
"Who sold them to you?" She asked as he dismissed them.
"Well, this guy in golden armor showed up and said that he had heard about me being an archer. He said that he sucks with a bow and arrow, but that he had a pair that he was willing to sell to me. My first actual interaction with Lux. He sold them to me for really cheap too. Just that I would owe him a favor in the future." Lux said.
"I can't believe that Lux would be so stupid!" Yang Manli, who had entered the office when Lux was showing off his bow and arrow, "With his armor and flying beast soul he'd basically be invincible in the first sanctuary! He's got the ideal archers build but he's a meathead! Ugg. Here's the analysis Station Master."
Lux bowed out and headed towards the telepads, "Later." He called out as he closed the door.
Teleporting to the shelter, Lux found that his Shriek Beast was probably only a couple of days away from evolving into a mutant rank creature. Satisfied with the progress, he slipped through the streets of Steel Armor Shelter like a ghost. Not wanting any of Son of Heaven's gang to notice him and possibly try to do something to him.
Once he had gotten several miles outside of the Shelter, Lux did a puma check just to make sure there no fecking pumas around and finally summoned up his armor and wings. It was interesting to note that Golden Armor had repaired itself of the damage it had sustained within a few hours after the fight with the Shura. The armor itself stretched out to envelop his wings, turning them golden. The wings were actually purple underneath the armor.
The first time that Lux had flown, it had been an emergency situation. Now, alone and with nothing other than a destination to reach with no schedules to keep, he let loose. Flying freely like this was a primordial dream of humanity made manifest. There was a joy to flying that Lux had never realized that he wanted to experience and now he felt like he could never get enough of it.
Lux knew that his wings were fast, but he discovered that he was actually very fast. Flying high he turned southwest towards the Dark Swamp and pushed to see exactly how fast he could go. He knew from the maps and information available on the web that the swamp was 200 miles away from the Shelter. So, he could pretty easily time himself and figure out how fast he was able to fly.
Turns out his top speed was a little over 130 miles an hour while maintaining a specific height. With a tailwind he could probably add 25% to that, and diving speeds could obviously exceed that by a large degree. For context, the fastest of flying type beast souls, i.e. Sacred-Blood rank ones, tended to max out at about 80 to 100 miles an hour depending on the specific beast soul. Meaning that Lux's buffs were putting in some serious work if his wings were on the lower end of the spectrum and still damn good buffs even if his wings were the best and naturally able to go around 100 MPH. it was actually the closest Lux had ever gotten to concrete numbers about how his buffs were working.
Gliding over the swamp after his full out sprint to get there, Lux surveyed the area. It really was a bad place to go for people with normal means. The place was crawling with creepy crawlies that looked venomous. Snakes, crocogators, and the shadows of larger things moving beneath the murky waters that could be anything.
As he flew, Lux continuously stopped and grabbed different flowers, fruits, berries, and just strange looking plants in general. Lots of random mushrooms that looked poisonous too. There was even this bush that had seven specific leaves that were colored like the rainbow, dotted around its normal green foliage so Lux obviously ate the special-colored ones. After that he decided to check his personal system because he was curious. And boy oh boy was he one happy camper.

Lux had gained… well a lot from visiting the swamp after just a few hours flying around eating random stuff he found on the ground. [Beast Soul Nurturing-grand] gave Lux the feeling that it did the same thing as the specific beast soul nurturing types of buffs, except to every kind of beast soul, and it did it better. The same with the [Beast Soul Enhancement-Grand] which just wholistically made every beast soul better than it had been before. The booster suites gave Lux the impression that they improved specific aspects of a beast soul to even greater degrees than they had before. Then there was the [Geno Point Acquisition Booster-major] which would increase the number of Geno points that he got randomly when eating creatures in the sanctuary, though not beyond the max of ten points from a single creature.
Then there was the greatest buff that man had ever seen. Truly the most desirable, most sought-after, holy grail of all buffs that could ever buff. [Pheromone Booster-Aphrodisiac] boosted Lux's pheromones to the point that they were basically an aphrodisiac. He could literally just stand in a room with the opposite sex and the humidity level would jump drastically if you catch my meaning. This was truly the most impressive of all buffs. One that was a heavy burden to carry, but Lux was willing to make the sacrifices that would come with such a heavy burden.
[Beast Soul Drop Rate Booster] seemed like a buff that he might have had all along, but it was new. His already ridiculous drop rate would increase. Lux wasn't sure if he would ever kill a creature and not get its beast soul now. The boost gave off a feeling that it massively increased drop rates.
Then there were the physical buffs which increased Lux's strength, durability, and reflexes. All fantastic buffs. Lux could leave the Dark Swamp now with just these gains and be happy about everything that he had gained. But he wasn't going to do that. For one thing, Lux wanted to get more Geno points. Another was that he was hoping to uncover the other buffs by getting ahold of rare Beast Soul types. And he had realized that he should probably get an arrow that didn't also deal poison damage as that could ruin the flesh that he was supposed to eat. So, Lux once again took to the skies, looking for some Mutant creatures to slay that were not so large that they would take weeks or months to consume fully.
The first victim of Lux's hunt was a snake that was only about six feet long. It had deep red scales and was surrounded by a dozen smaller snakes that were all white. Lux couldn't be sure that it was a Mutant rank creature just from looking at it, but its difference in coloration and the fact that it seemed like a pack leader would indicate that it was indeed at least a Mutant. The snakes didn't notice him at all as he swooped in with his Sacred-Blood spear and drove it through the skull of the red scaled snake before taking off into the sky once more with the snakes corpse impaled on his spear.
[Mutant creature, Red-Scaled Basilisk, killed. Beast soul of the Red-Scaled Basilisk gained. Eat its flesh to gain between zero and ten Mutant Geno points.]
Lux pumped his fist in the air, celebrating the fact he had gotten it right. He also wondered if the Basilisk had had some kind of eye powers… That could have been bad if it did. He would check out the beast soul when he found a place to cook and eat the snake.
Lux found one of the rare high and dry spots in the swamp and pulled his mobile cookware out of his pack. The 'pot' was actually a bag of some special heat-resistant material. Having fabric cookware really saved on space. That way Lux wasn't running around with cutlery and pots and pans everywhere. It also saved on weight. Lux had cut down the normal weight of his pack by a lot since he didn't need to bring rations or water with him already, but further reducing the bulk by getting fabric cookware was a godsend.
With the fire going and the snake being cooked, Lux pulled up his newest beast soul.
[Mutant Red-Scaled Basilisk(Mask)]
Lux was unsure as to what the mask did. He manifested it and a beast soul formed into a serpentine cobra-like mask that sealed to his face without any straps or latching mechanisms to speak of, like it was just magnetically held in place. For Lux it was like he wasn't even wearing a mask, there was no decrease in visibility at all, like the mask itself was invisible. There was, in fact, an increase in his perception. With the mask on, Lux found that he could see heat signatures, and his sense of smell skyrocketed sensitivity. Lux was definitely happy with the mask. It would help in tracking things at the very least. And it looked incredibly badass when covered by his golden black beetle armor.
It took about an hour to cook up the snake and another two hours to successfully consume the whole thing. But Lux had gotten eight more Mutant Geno points which was pleasing. That brought his Mutant Geno points up to 17. Only 83 more to go.
After the rather large meal, Lux decided to secure his little camp and bed down for the night. He was in no rush to hunt everything he could see. It was late afternoon so if he went to sleep now, he could start really early and hunt while it was still dark to see what kind of nightlife was going on in the swamp.
Lux awoke in the middle of the night to the sensation of attacks bouncing off his armor and was on his feet damn near immediately. Looking around in confusion at first, trying find the source of the attacks. He quickly spotted the forms multiple of somethings retreating into the waters of the swamp. He lunged at the closest of the retreating forms, manifesting his spear as he thrust it forward faster than most humans would be able to even comprehend.
[Primitive creature, Kuo-Toa, killed. Beast soul of the Kuo-Toa gained. Eat-]
Lux ignored the rest of the notification and pulled up the new beast soul. [Primitive Kuo-Toa(Weapon-Net)] He raised an eyebrow at that. A net was considered a weapon? Manifesting it, Lux beheld what looked like one of those caster nets, but it had wicked looking barbs and hooks throughout its structure. He gave it a twirl and threw it. A rope connected to his wrist extended about thirty feet before stopping, giving the net a range limit. But the net itself opened and behaved almost like it had a mind of its own, opening up to its full extension, which was about a dozen feet in diameter, before closing on the imaginary target… This was a fantastic beast soul. Especially since he could imagine that it would gain more range and possibly get bigger as it ranked up. As it was right now it probably wouldn't help all that much against a Sacred-Blood creature, but it should be able to help with Mutants no problem.
Having been rudely awakened but pleasantly surprised, Lux collected everything in his camp and decided to set off on the hunt. Still stopping to eat anything that looked like it might give him a buff. Swooping through the air Lux was glad that he had decided to check out the nightlife. If the swamp had been bustling with creatures during the day, at night it was absolutely crawling with them. Every creature and their grandmothers were out to play under the cover of night. Lux was even having to avoid flying creatures that were a bit too brave for their own good.
"And now I am become Death." Lux muttered as he manifested his bow and arrow. The hunt truly starting in the dead of night.
I'm up to chapter 14 and working on 15 on my patreon. Gonna try and keep it consistantly at least five chapters ahead over there.
Also it looks like Lux is going to diverge a lot more more rapidly than I had originally planned. But them Buffs really do be adding up, and Lux aint no beta bitch.
