For what felt like weeks Jay and Karen were utterly civil with one another.
Karen knew she didn’t want to do anything to hurt Jay’s feelings again. And he seemed to be tiptoeing around her, as if he was trying to avoid sending her packing again.
Granted he often mentioned how busy he was with an upcoming project, and she had plenty of work to keep her occupied, but in the few quiet moments, Karen knew there were so many words that could be said.
Then he announced one day at breakfast that he would to take her out for dinner. She calmly agreed and spent the rest of the day wondering what to wear and if she should make a special effort or not.
For one, she was glad that she didn’t have to call Cheryl or Mrs Brown. She didn’t want anyone to know how much she cared at the moment. So her only consultants were her beloved Malamutes.
When Jay came downstairs, he found Karen waiting for him.
“Always on time. You look lovely, Karen.”
