Chapitre 6: 06
Friday afternoon.
David was getting ready for the dinner date he had planned with Mia and her family.
" Oh man, this is gonna be great!" David exclaimed. He laced up his shoes and put on a black jacket just as May came through his door.
" Oh my, you look marvelous sweetie."
" You think so?"
" I know it. Now, you better get going or you're going to be late. Don't want to make a bad first impression now do you?"
" Probably shouldn't. But you know my luck! See ya later, May!" David ran out the house shouting.
Speeding down the street, David was feeling a rush of excitement. This was a day he had been waiting for, for quite a long time, and now it was finally here. He couldn't be more happy.
That is until an armored car came speeding by, being followed closely behind by the police.
" Oh, come on! You gotta be kidding me!" David shouted. He looked around nervously, searching for a place to change. " Damnit." He cursed as he ducked into a nearby alley. He quickly jerked his shoes off and stripped out of his shirt and pants as quickly as possible, leaving him in his red suit. He grabbed his mask from his pocket and slid it on and then grabbed his clothes and jumped to the roof of the building he was hiding behind.
" Man, I hope nobody finds these." He muttered as he webbed his clothes to the ground. " Come on, David of all times for that Parker luck. BAH!" David leaped off of the roof and started swinging above the buildings.
He quickly started catching up to the armored vehicle.
David swung over the police car and landed hard with a thud on the armored trucks roof.
" What was that?" One guy asked.
David leaped down onto the front of the hood. " Hey, did you guys really have to do this in broad daylight? Doesn't seem very smart to me."
" Shoot him!"
" Not in the truck dumbass! You... Look out!"
David jumped off the side of the truck and shot two web lines right to the driver side door and used the momentum to slingshot himself right into the truck, shattering the glass window, and knocking the other two out the passenger side of the truck.
David slammed on the breaks, stopping the truck and quickly jumped out the passenger side, shooting two webs and pinning them down to the ground.
David took a look inside the truck, just in case someone else had been hiding in there.
" What is this? Damn this is a lot of cash. What in the world is all this for? And why is it... Wait a minute." On the back of the trucks wall was King's insignia. " More stuff belonging to King? What is with this guy all of a sudden? Why is everyone interested in stealing his stuff?"
David was deep in thought when he was alerted to the sound of police sirens getting closer.
" Oops, I forgot. Public enemy number one. I better get out of here." David muttered. He ran out of the truck and pulled himself above the skyline, using the roofs to hide his escape.
" Damn it. This is getting more and more ridiculous, David. Why is John King suddenly public enemy number one? Gotta look into it more when I get the chance. But first...." David muttered. " I gotta get changed into something more presentable."

In an effort to save time, David swung his way to home of one John King.
" Whoa. This place is nice. I might just be a bit jealous." David muttered as he approached the front door of the rather large tower.
" David approached the door and pressed the buzzer.
" Who is it?" A voice asked on the other end.
" Hello, my name's David Parker... I was invited by Mia." He said.
The door opened up and a large man in a black and white suit stepped out.
He was the picture of intimidation. Big, Muscular, and weathered. The scar on his face presented the image of a hard-pressed man who probably had seen some shit.
" Hold still." The man said. He pulled out a metal detector and started waving it over David's body.
David assumed he was searching for weapons.
" Alright, come in." The man said to David. He stepped to the side, allowing David into the building.
The moment he stepped in, he was immediately surrounded by a group of armed guards, all of whom looked ready to kill.
" Uh, hi?"
" Follow us." One of the guards spoke.
He took the lead, while another man stepped behind him and shoved him forward.
' These guys are serious, business. Jeez.' David thought to himself. He followed the man to an elevator, where he and three others crowded into.
The ride up to the top of the building was quite... Tense.
It felt like these guys were doing their absolute best to intimidate him, and to be fair it was working.
That's why David breathed a heavy sigh of relief the moment the elevator doors opened up to the top floor.
" Oh, thank god." David spoke.
Stepping out of the elevator, David was greeted by the sight of a tall man with short black hair wearing a black and white suit, and a woman with long blonde hair, who upon closer look, looked exactly like Mia but older.
This was John King and his wife.
" David! Hey, you made it!" Mia came shooting into the room with a look of pure joy on her face. She gave David a hug and then turned to her parents. " Mom, dad, this is David. David my parents."
" It's a pleasure to meet you both."
" Likewise." King responded. " Well, now that we're introduced. What do you say we get aquatinted more. Shall we?" John asked as he gestured towards the dining room.
David nodded and joined Mia and her family at their dining room table.
David was swept away by how everything looked. Growing up in a fairly well-off middle-class family was fine. But this all felt so different. Even the couch looked like it was more expensive than his whole house.
" So, David, why don't you tell me about yourself. My daughter seems to think the world of you." King spoke.
" Oh well, what do you want to know?" David asked.
" Everything." King stated.
" Okay... I'm pretty much top of my class in all subjects. I plan to go to college and study physics and bioengineering. I've recently gotten an internship with Star Labs. I even got a chance to meet with one of their lead scientists, which was pretty cool."
" I see. Ambition. I like that, young man. What else? Any extracurricular activities?"
" Not really. I was part of a photo club back in my freshman year, but the club was disbanded. Since then, I've been focused on keeping my grades up."
" I see. What about your parents?"
" Uh, Dad... David here actually lives with his aunt." Mia spoke up.
King looked at Mia, which made her nervous. Or at least that's what David picked up.
" I see."
" Yeah. I actually lost my parents when I was young, and not too long ago, my uncle passed. I'm not gonna lie, it's been hard. But we Parkers don't let anything keep us down."
" That's a good motto, young man. You know something, when I first heard about you, I thought you were another young punk just looking for a handout, but I have to admit it's good to see a kid your age with some ambition and drive. If Mia, had your sense of self-respect she'd be doing wonders. Tell me, have you considered what you're going to do after college?"
" Yes, actually I plan on applying for a position at one of Star Labs' main branches in Central City. They have a better engineering division than the one here in Seattle. Plus, Dr. Palmer works there. His work on atoms is so advanced. It's quite an interesting read. I believe with his work on atoms and how cells can be manipulated and reconstructed we might even be able to find cures for diseases that no one has yet."
" Hm, nice. Nice." King muttered. " Ah, it looks like our food, has arrived."
David looked away from the table as two waiters strolled into the room carrying trays.
The waiters placed plates of food on the table and quickly retreated.
Lobster, Rice, Steak, Fish and shrimp. Different kinds of food piled up in front of David.
" Well don't be shy dig in."
" Uh, yes, sir."
David took the time to enjoy his meal, while having on and off again conversations with Mr. King, all the while Mia and her mother sat quietly. At first David didn't mind it, or more like he hadn't actually realized it, but as time went on, he could tell the two ladies were uncomfortable.
So, after some time, David spoke to Mia.
" So, Mia, you never did tell me... What are your plans for after high school?"
" Huh, oh well, I'm not sure yet. I've been doing some thinking, but I haven't actually decided on what I'm going to do, or where I'm going to go."
" Really? Well, you're pretty smart. You could try and come to Central City university with me. I mean, I haven't gotten accepted yet. But..."
" Oh, I don't know." Mia muttered.
" Well, let's shelve that thought for now. I'm sure you'll figure it out in time. You always do."
" Yeah...."
...................
" Well, I should be getting home. Thank you for the dinner Mr. King. Mrs. King." David spoke. He stood up from his seat and shook both King's hand and his wife's hands before turning to Mia and giving her a good tight hug. " Call me, later." He whispered in her ear. He then took a step back and grabbed his jacket.
" Uh, David, before you go. Let me walk you out."
" No, no. That's fine."
" No, no come on. I insist." King said.
David watched as his expression hardened.
King placed his hand on David's back and walked with him to the elevator just outside his condo.
Once they were out of earshot, King turned to David with a stern look on his face.
" Alright, listen up, kid. You seem like a good young man, got a nice head on your shoulders. I like that." King stated. " But here's the problem. You aren't good enough for my little girl. The daughter of John King can't be seen prancing around with some filth from a run-down family. So, here's what I'm gonna do." King took out his check book and wrote down a number and handed it to David. " Here's a check for ten grand. That should be enough for you. Take it, walk out of my building and never speak to my daughter again. Understand?"
David was aghast. He hadn't expected this from the man who seemed at least a little tolerant just a little while ago.
" Ah.. I'm sorry. What?"
" What not enough? Okay twenty grand. I'll give you twenty grand right now, to leave and never come back. Hell, I'll even finance your college tuition if you want it. Just leave and don't come back."
" I'm sorry, sir. This is a nice proposition. But I'm not taking your money. Money wasn't what I've ever wanted. Listen sir, I know it never really came up, it seemed like you didn't want to broach the subject.... But I care for Mia deeply and if she allows me to, I'd like to make things serious between us... Uh-er not that anything is going on right now... At least I'm not... Sure? But, eh, look... All I'm saying is, no amount of money can keep me from seeing your daughter. So, I'd like to ask that you kindly not insult me or her like that ever again. She's not an object that's to be put up for sale. She's a beautiful with a path of her own to walk. And you should be ashamed for thinking otherwise. Have a good night, sir."
David called the elevator up to the top floor and got in.
King watched as David descended before pulling out his phone.
" Yeah boss?"
" You see that kid leaving?"
" Yes."
" Follow him and break his knees."
" You got it."
