The mansion was indeed so much bigger than Aerine initially thought. The spaces inside were purposely distorted so that some hallways could be seen the same, but it would lead to another direction or floors. 

Floors or stairs were merely there for formality or appearance, as Aerine noticed that even when they didn't use the stairs, they were already on the upper floors when they only left an intersection. 

She wondered if Lucian or others weren't there to guide her. Would she be lost then? This question popped out of her head, which earned Lucian's chuckle. 

As they were traversing the hallways again, Lucian answered her curiosity.
