Philadelphia, the King Clan.
It's been ten days since Mason King disappeared in a car accident.
Three days ago, Mr. King got up from his sickbed, took a car to the mountain road where the accident happened, and stood there with wobbling feet and a walking stick for an entire afternoon. He even stood in the rain that afternoon, refusing to listen to anyone who tried to persuade him. Standing there, he looked down at the lush woods at the bottom of the cliff without saying a word. It was late when he was finally persuaded to return by the steward.
No one in the King Clan dared to say to his face that Mason might really be dead. Yet, seeing Mr. King standing at the scene of the accident all day on the seventh day of Mason's disappearance, it's likely that he has accepted that his most hopeful grandson may no longer be in this world.
However, he refused to admit it. Lying in bed, he shouted at the comforting nurse, "Who says my grandson is gone? If that ungrateful brat doesn't come back alive to fulfill his filial duties, I'll follow him to hell and whip him!"
Most of the management rights of the York-King Group and properties under the King Clan were already handed over to Mason, but Mr. King was highly respected in the family, and all branches and businesses intended to his direction.
When he fell ill, half of the business community trembled, fearing that he might leave this world at any time. Now that such a big thing had happened, naturally no one dared to contradict him. There were all kinds of conjecture within the family, but many things were not dared to be said openly.
The nurse was chased away by Mr. King's shouting. The door to the ward opened and closed, and someone else who was not afraid of death came in.
Mr. King, impatient, threw a pill bottle towards the door, "Get out!"
Louis King quickly caught the bottle thrown at him, glanced quickly to the doorway, came in, closed the door smoothly, and muttered continuously as he walked towards the sickbed, "Grandpa, if you keep getting angry like this, I'm afraid you won't be able to wait for my brother to come back. Then you will only have me, your undeserving grandson, to look after you in old age. You wouldn't be satisfied with that, would you?"
Hearing this, Mr. King's eye twitched with anger, but he vaguely noticed some hidden meaning in his words. With his weathered but sharp eyes, he stared hard at him.
The grandfather and grandson stared at each other for a moment, without talking. To avoid any possibility of eavesdropping, Louis raised two fingers towards his grandfather, then gently hooked his fingers, and then lip-spoke: "My brother is not dead."
Mr. King continued to stare at Louis's expression for quite some time, his eyes brightening.
With the King Clan's status in the Chinese business circle, it seemed like the clan only received admiration. But within the family, even with the most comprehensive security measures, it's hard to guarantee if anyone close by had ulterior motives. Even this thoroughly checked ward might have secret listening devices.
Seeing Mr. King understanding, Louis smiled, put the pill bottle he had just caught back next to the sick bed, then left in a casual manner, just as if he popped in for some idle chat with his grandfather.
Two hours ago, Louis received a call from a stranger's phone number. Thinking it was yet another girl with an ability to find his phone number, he hung up several times. The other party stubbornly called again and again. Just as he was about to block the number, a text message came in.
188XXXXXXXX: [Dare you to block me?]
The moment he saw the message, Louis felt a chill run down his spine. The same number lit up on the screen again, he immediately answered: "Who are you?"
There was silence on the other side of the phone for a moment. Louis suddenly paused amidst this quiet, lifting his eyes to the daylight, confirming it was still daytime, there couldn't possibly be ghosts.
