Chapitre 2: Chapter 2: The bus

We arrived at my house, a wooden house, painted cream and white, the balcony lights were still on and it was night, my mother went to her room at once, as she had had a long day. my little brothers' room, who were all lying on one bed, and Caleb was laying in his wooden crib and crying incessantly.

_ "Leah, make her fall asleep now, we are very sleepy" said Deborah

_ "If they were so sleepy, regardless of the baby's cries, they would at least be trying to sleep, but I see them more awake than an owl at this time."

_ "Let's sing a song please" said Jacob

_ "Okay, so I can put you all to sleep"

The kids fell asleep while I sang the song " Follow the drinking gourd "

When everyone had already been asleep I heard a noise that came from the kitchen, I thought of going down the stairs to see what it was but then I thought it was a mouse or some other animal and I walked down the hall to get to my room.

When I got to my room, I forgot about the strange sound of the kitchen and began to sing the song that I had sung to my brothers, which was a song that led the slaves to freedom, this was very sad because not everyone managed to escape, meditated on it until I fell asleep.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was already morning, I discovered it when I felt a ray of sunlight that touched my face. I got up from my bed happily and the first thing I did was look through the window of my room.

When I look down there was Dana, my best friend greeting me. Dana had big shiny eyes, but they were covered behind her glasses, her skin was a coffee-with-milk color and her hair was more frizzy than mine and she always wore it in a bun.

_ "Leah, we're late, Go ahead and get dressed"

_ "I'm coming, I'm coming, I'll go out in a little while"

I took a good bath and combed my little afro, I always kept it very short so I didn't have to untangle it a lot. Then I put on a blue dress with sleeves and a v-neck, this dress was below the knees and I put on my shoes. At the end I looked at myself in the mirror, I have a great resemblance to my father, I have very dark eyes like him, the color of my skin is darker than his, unlike my mother, whose skin is a coppery color and my mother's eyes, like those of George and some of my brothers are olive green, George has coppery skin like my mother's, George is only 14 years old, but he seems older than me, which I am 16, if you were to see George first impression you would think that he is 18, because George is a tall and stocky boy.

I went downstairs and the neighbor was preparing breakfast. Bety, my neighbor, was a sweet lady, although she was older, she was patient with children, especially my little brothers.

George was sitting at the table eating just like my other brothers.

_ "George, let's go" I said

_ "You are not going to eat anything" Beth told me

_ "I'm in a hurry, but I'll take an apple and eat it on the way."

_ "Bye Bety, Bye kids" said George

_ "Bye" I said

Me and George left the house and Dana was waiting for us.

We started our way to the bus stop.

_ "Dana, why didn't you go to the speech yesterday?"

_ "Forgive me friend, is that I stay at home taking care of my grandmother, who is in bed"

We got to the bus stop, the bus was empty, I was going to be the first to get in, and when I put my foot on the bus ...

_ "Hey you, where do you think you're going!" When I turned my head, behind George and Dana was a group of about 20 white boys.

_ "To take the bus like you, dont you see" said George

_ "Shut up, I didn't ask you, I asked her!" Said the boy who had black hair and brown eyes, looked in her 20s and had a mustache and beard.

_ " I...I...'m going... to .... to .... school-" I said with fear

_ "Leave my sister alone" George yelled

_ "George, no!" Dana said indicating George to shut up and be submissive to the white guys

_ "Disgusting nigger, you will see what is called respect"

Everyone started hitting George, I felt so worthless and guilty of the hits he received.

_ "Enough, please!" Dana and I yelled when they finished beating him they got on the bus and I ran to where George was to pick him up.

_ "I hope they all die" whispered George

_ "If you want I'll take you home" I said

_ "It's nothing serious, as I want I'll go to school." said George touching his lip that was dripping blood.

We entered the bus and sat in the last seats as usual, because on buses and trains white people sat in the front and black people in the back.
