Chapitre 8: The Memory Part 2

The two of them walked in silence for a little bit; the only thing they could hear was the sounds of insects and birds as the sun began to set. Soon enough, they were utterly alone. There was no one else near them; there was no one to hear them talk.

Father - "So... I've been thinking..."

Madison looked up at him to better understand what he was about to say

Father - "What are your thoughts on getting a mom?"

Madison didn't quite understand what he was trying to say and became visibly confused. Her father noticed her face and tried to elaborate.

Father - "I think it will be good for you. I don't really understand much about raising a daughter, but I'm pretty sure another girl would be better at that than me. Plus, we would have another family member who would love you as much as I do."

Madison - "Who will be mom?"

Father - "I'll show you one day soon, ok."

Madison - "ok."

Her father pats her head, and they continue to walk. They both remained silent for some time; then, her father broke the silence once again.

Father - "Have you been thinking about what you will do when you get older?"

Father - "There has to be something you want to do, right? You know, in the future."

Madison - "Nope! I just wanna be strong! How to get there doesn't matter."

Father - "Well, alright, just don't go selling your soul or something... Also, why do you want to be strong anyway?"

Madison - "hmmm... well, strong people get praised, right? I also want a statue. That'd be awesome!"

Father - *chuckles* "That would be pretty cool. I can't wait to see it one day."

After he said that, he looked down towards Madison and gave her a gentle smile. Madison looked up at him and responded with a smile of her own. She was happy. She was truly happy.

The sun had set, and darkness had begun to cover the land.

Father - "Come on, let's head ba-"

A bright flash colored the freshly darkened sky, and when they turned around, all they could see was fire. So much fire.

The land was covered in bright orange light. Their village, their home, their livelihood was being turned to ash before their very eyes.

Father - "Stay here. I'll be right back."

Before Madison could answer, her father ran off towards the village. She knew she should do as her father said, but she didn't want to just sit and do nothing, so she began to head towards the village. A man in black appeared in front of her and hit her head. Madison lost consciousness.

Madison regained her consciousness. Her vision was a bit blurry, and her head hurt. Even though her vision wasn't perfect at the time, she could tell that she wasn't in her village. She started to remember what had happened, and after about a minute of thinking, she remembered what had happened. Questions began to fill her head, 'what happened to the village'? 'who was the dark figure'? 'where is father'? Her vision was better now, so she stood up and tried to get a grasp of her surroundings.

She was in what looked like a jail cell by herself. The bars in front of her were very close to one another, so squeezing through them seemed impossible, even for a child. She got closer to the bars and tried to look around. Across from her was another cell that had a child she couldn't recognize in it. What prevented the captives from getting too close to one another was an aisle that evenly separated the cells.

Madison was in a panic; she was scared. She was in an unknown place at an unspecified time; she didn't know anything that she wanted to know and couldn't think of any way to find out. Her panic quickly became audible, and she sounded like a tiny animal whimpering as she began to lay down and curl up into a ball.

Man - "Quiet the hell down, kid!"

The unknown man shouted this at her and kicked one of the metal bars. The bar he kicked bent a tiny bit and made a loud rattling sound. Madison was still curled up in a ball, and what the man had said and done had the opposite effect of what he wanted. She gave off a terrified shriek when he kicked the bar, and after the shriek, she became a bit louder.

Man - "Damn kids. Didn't your parents teach you when to be quiet?"

The man had opened the gate and crouched down a little to appeal to the young Madison.

Man - *sigh* "It'll be alright."

Madison became quieter and peaked up from her ball at the man who had just spoken to her. He looked like an average person; nothing about his looks seemed to align with what he had previously said and done. He didn't look old, he was wearing what looked like some leather armor, and his face had a few small scars.

Man - "Come here."

The man gestured for Madison to come to him with his hand, and Madison stood up and did just that. When she reached him, the man smiled a bit and petted her head.

Man - "I'm Jeremy, and you are?

Madison - "Madison"

Jeremy - "Well, Madison, can you please take a step back and close your eyes?"

Madison - "ok"

She did just as he had asked. He started to seem kind now. Why did he act the way he did at first if he was so ni-

Jeremy stood up and proceeded to punt Madison across the room back to the area that she was lying in before coming over. Pain. She was filled with pure pain. Her stomach hurt. It hurt so much. As someone who had never been seriously injured or in a real fight, she never felt pain this bad before. Tears rolled down her face, and she couldn't correctly breathe for a second as she crawled back into a ball.

Jeremy had left the room and locked the door behind him.

Jeremy - "When you are told to do something, you do it! When I tell you to be quiet, I don't mean get louder; I mean be fucking quiet! Do you understand!?"

He looked back at Madison while expecting some acknowledgment of what he had just said, but there was none from her.

Jeremy - "And when I speak to you, I expect an answer! I'll let it slide this time, so be grateful. Enjoy your new home until we can find you a good owner. WELCOME TO THE BLACK MARKET!"

He stood there for a second and became a bit annoyed that Madison didn't react to what he said or his very expressive hand gestures; he just made a 'tsk' sound and walked away.

Jeremy - "Stupid ass kid."
