Chapter 24
"How could he...?"
Elizabeth trotted angrily out of Alpha Charles's room, feeling salty by the way she was sent out of the room with the others. Charles's coldness towards her, in contrast to the man who had made her his first Luna.
She tried to get it out of her head, but was just unable to. It was a bitter experience to get yelled at in the same way she had yelled at Lucas. She had thought of stopping to overhear the conversation between him and the strange-looking witch.
But she was just too humiliated to stand around the other men he had asked out of the room. The stigma from it stung her bitterly, knowing that he wouldn't do the same to Maya, who was his favorite.
"Very well, then," she muttered to herself as she pushed it all behind her. It was time to channel her energy towards more useful things. Her mind reverted to the concubines she had seen emerging from the maids' quarters.
If her guesses were correct, they were the culprits behind all the occurrences of that day. The disposition they carried during their brief meeting with them that morning still had her in deep thoughts.
There was only one way to find out, she thought to herself as she walked towards the door to Stella's room. She had always been critical of them since the first day they set foot into the fortress.
She tapped on the door, which instantly came open, with Ruth being the first face she was met with. Ruth seemed rather startled to see her, but quickly regained her composure.
"Hello…" Ruth said, as she stepped out of the room to meet Elizabeth and shut the door behind her. "To what do I owe this privilege of meeting you, my queen?"
"Seems like you and Stella share quite a bond, to the point that you stay in her room, and welcome her guest like yours," Elizabeth remarked, subtly declaring her suspicions.
"Well, what can I say? We're more like sisters…"
Sisters in crime, Elizabeth thought, as she tried her best from keeping the conversation from deteriorating into a right interrogation.
"Your bond is quite enviable," Elizabeth made sure that her smile didn't wear off for a second as she uttered her suspicions subtly. "Having someone who shares the same desires with you is quite an asset within these walls. Especially when you intend to do a lot of things which some might consider questionable."
The smile on Ruth's face briefly disappeared and suddenly reappeared. "Well, sometimes we refuse to think about what others think of us and just live our lives to the fullest within these walls."
"Oh… I see. I guess that had to be why you both walked past us this morning without looking back for a single moment. Or maybe you were just quite in a hurry after going to the maids' quarters to do one of your questionable deeds."
That time around, the smile on Ruth's face disappeared completely, as she finally got where Elizabeth was driving at.
"Did I say something wrong?" Elizabeth asked, still with a smile, as she knew that she was getting through to her.
"What exactly do you want with all these questions?" Ruth inquired, as she was on the verge of being provoked. She felt like just walking out on the conversation, but that would be even more suspicious.
"Nothing, at all. I don't understand why you should be getting worked up about them. Is there something I'm not being told?" Elizabeth toyed with her a bit, with her words.
"Quit bothering me," Ruth said angrily, as she walked away from the conversation.
"Just as expected," Elizabeth muttered under her breath, as she watched Ruth walk away. That was all she needed to confirm her suspicions of them being the culprits behind the maid's demise.
With that, her plan was formulated.

"What do you mean by 'everything'?" Alpha Charles asked with angered curiosity. It felt like Edna was toying with his curiosity, with her prolonged silence.
"The dark moon is coming, Alpha Charles," she finally spoke up, with a tone that made him all the more frightened. "The prophecy remains, no matter how hard you intend to disagree with it."
Alpha Charles was totally speechless.
"You're quite fortunate that you were given the warning. Most times, the doom of alphas of your kind comes swiftly without any notice," Edna went on, with her icy green eyes fixated on him.
"What do you mean by alphas of my kind?" Alpha Charles questioned, trying to get up out of bed,
"Your cruel rule over your people hasn't gone unnoticed by the spirits," Edna made a show of dauntlessness with the way she spoke. For a moment, it felt like she had forgotten that she was still speaking to the alpha. "I guess this is a kind of reward for your cruelty and insensitivity towards your people—"
"Crap…" Alpha Charles cut in as he'd had enough of her debilitating words. "I have done everything right. This is all a bunch of crap."
"No, it's not. Your fate is as good as sealed. It's a fine deal."
"Then watch me defy prophecy," Alpha Charles stood to his feet, with a fresh resolve to refuse the fate which the prophecy was pointing him to. "None of those fables and fairy tales will happen on my watch."
"You just don't want to get it, do you? Quit being too obstinate—"
"Seize her!" he ordered, as his men came running into the room and grabbed the witch by her arms.
"You will regret this…" she kept saying until she was taken out of the room. "You will surely regret it!"

"Keep it together…" Lucas kept muttering, each time he recalled that he had let his only opportunity to be with the alpha slip through his hands.
He kept cussing and swearing under his breath as he walked through the corridor, to go check how things were going with the alpha.
As he was about to get to the door of the alpha's room, he was suddenly overwhelmed by the attraction of the mate pull.
'Selene is here…' his wolf announced excitedly.
'What… why?' he was overtaken by fear and tense anticipation. For a moment, he was frozen at the spot, as he was trying to make his decision in a split second.
He reasoned that Alpha Charles could still be speaking with his guest, and there could be no way for him to gain access to him. But then, he wondered why Selene could have been there, even after the fall-out between her alpha and his alpha?
'There's only one way to find out,' his wolf replied, the questions running through his head.
'Get a grip of yourself, Reid,' Lucas said to his wolf, who was pushing him to take action faster than he thought. But then, there was no way that he could ignore the mate pull that had him reeling.
He looked around to make sure that there was no one looking in his direction, as he was about to do something quite questionable.
Fortunately, there weren't any onlookers. He made his way down the stairs, following the trail of her scent. He wondered how she had been able to find the secret underground passage where her scent led to.
As he moved, he paid no mind to the people who passed him by. All that saturated his mind was Selene's scent, which faded every other thing out of his head in a manner that bothered him. Intermittently, he turned to make sure that he wasn't being followed by anyone.
Soon enough, he was standing at the door of the passage where Selene had been waiting for him. He still wondered why she was so eager to meet with him, at the expense of disobeying her alpha.
"I guess this is it…" he took a deep breath, as he put his hand on the door. Meeting with her felt like he was betraying his fondness for Ryder's beta. But then, it couldn't be helped.
"Hey…" a voice from behind made Lucas quickly whimper in fear, as he turned to see the last person he had expected to see.
"Queen Charlotte?" he asked in shock. His mind was quickly running through the most believable explanation for his presence there. But then, he still didn't understand why she was following him.
"Yes? It's me," she smiled. "Lucas right?"
"Right," he replied, as he couldn't wait to hear what exactly she wanted with him. It would come off as rude if he would asked her plainly. "So…?"
"So?" she asked with a smile that irritated him. "What are you doing down here?"
"Well…" he was out of words, as he couldn't answer her. Why did she just have to show up there and then? "Well, what are you doing down here?"
She seemed stunned by his reply, as she hadn't expected such. A tightening silence filled the air in-between the both of them.
Who would answer first?
