Chapitre 12: Chapter 3

The group worked tirelessly over the next few days to come up with a plan to evade the government's pursuit. They knew they couldn't stay in their current location for much longer, so they scouted out new locations, looking for somewhere that was secure and secluded.

"We could head up north," Sarah suggested. "There's a small town that's been abandoned since the resource crisis. It's off the grid, and there's no way the government would think to look there."

Tyler and David exchanged a glance, considering her idea. It was risky, but it could work.

"We'll have to travel light," David said. "We can't afford to bring too much attention to ourselves."

They packed up their essentials and set out on foot, making their way towards the abandoned town. It was a grueling journey, with danger lurking around every corner. But they pressed on, driven by their determination to survive.

As they approached the town, Tyler's heart sank. It was in even worse shape than he had expected. The buildings were crumbling, and the streets were littered with debris. It was clear that no one had lived there for a long time.

But they had no other choice. They made their way to one of the more intact buildings and set up camp, fortifying the entrances and preparing for the worst.

Days turned into weeks, and they settled into a rhythm of scavenging for food and water, and keeping watch for any signs of danger. But they couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

One night, as they were huddled around a fire, they heard footsteps approaching. They sprang to their feet, ready for a fight, but what they saw surprised them.

It was a young girl, no more than twelve years old, looking scared and alone.

"Please don't hurt me," she said, her voice shaking. "I'm just looking for a place to stay."

Tyler and Sarah exchanged a glance, then Tyler stepped forward.

"What's your name?" he asked, trying to sound as friendly as possible.

The girl hesitated, then spoke softly. "Emma."

Tyler could see the fear in her eyes, and he knew that she was in the same boat as they were. Alone, scared, and just trying to survive.

"We can't let her stay here," David said, his voice cold. "She'll slow us down, and she's too much of a liability."

But Tyler knew that they couldn't turn her away. They were all in this together.

"She can stay," Tyler said firmly. "We'll figure it out."

And so, they added another member to their small group, and continued to fight for survival in a world that seemed determined to crush them.

As they settled in for the night, Tyler couldn't help but wonder what other challenges lay ahead. They had come so far, but they still had a long way to go. The government was still out there, and they were still being hunted.

Over the next few days, Emma proved to be a valuable addition to the group. Despite her young age, she was resourceful and quick on her feet. She helped with scavenging for food and water, and even managed to catch a few small animals for them to eat.

As they settled into their routine, Tyler couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. He had seen movement in the shadows more than once, and he couldn't help but wonder if the government had finally caught up to them.

One night, as they were huddled around the fire, Tyler's fears were confirmed. A group of armed soldiers burst into the building, their weapons at the ready.

"Hands up!" one of them shouted. "You're all under arrest for breaking the law."

Tyler felt a surge of panic as he saw the soldiers closing in on them. They were outnumbered and outgunned, and there was no way they could fight their way out.

But then, something unexpected happened. Emma stepped forward, her hands held high.

"It was me," she said, her voice steady. "I'm the one you're looking for. They had nothing to do with it."

The soldiers hesitated, clearly surprised by this turn of events.

"Step aside, girl," one of them said. "We're taking all of you in."

But Emma didn't back down. "I'll go with you," she said. "Just let them go."

The soldiers exchanged a glance, then nodded. "Fine. We'll take the girl and let the rest of you go. But if we catch you again, there won't be any mercy."

And with that, they took Emma away, leaving Tyler, Sarah, and David alone once again.

Tyler felt a mixture of relief and guilt as they made their way out of the abandoned town. They had lost one of their own, but they had also avoided capture. And Emma had sacrificed herself for them, even though she had only known them for a few days.

As they walked in silence, Tyler couldn't help but wonder what had happened to the other 80% of the population. Had they found a way to escape the bleak existence that they had been left with? Or were they still struggling to survive, just like them?

One thing was for sure. They were in this for the long haul, and they would do whatever it took to stay alive. But they needed to find a way to outsmart the government, to stay one step ahead of their pursuers.

As they walked on into the unknown, Tyler knew that their journey was far from over. But he was ready for whatever lay ahead, as long as he had his friends by his side.
