Chapitre 92: Invading the Dumont Dukedom (1)
Fun things must come to an end, the three-day holiday has ended and it is time for everyone to go back to work.
For the soldiers, work means either training or war. They have unfinished business with the Dumont Dukedom and they have to kill the greedy higher-ups of the Dumont Dukedom if they want to live in peace.
Today, the combat-ready soldiers which totaled four thousand men were preparing. The city lord ordered them to attack the Dumont Dukedom.
Blanc cannot leave the city so it is all up to Helena to conquer the Dumont Dukedom.
There are many advantages to conquering the Dumont Dukedom compared to disadvantages.
First of all, they will destroy the root of their greedy invasions by killing the top brass of the dukedom.
Second, trade routes can be established and Adelaine's market will expand. In addition to this, they can establish a branch in the Dumont Dukedom once conquered.
Third, the Dumont Dukedom has been developing for around two hundred years and the population of the people there is massive. Once they conquer the dukedom, they can expand their military even more.
Of course, there are disadvantages as well.
Invaders are not welcome no matter which nation you invade and even if the top brass of that nation is greedy, the citizens are usually scared of huge changes brought by invaders and conquerors.
In addition to this, the family members of the soldiers that they killed during the war will definitely harbor some hatred which will probably cause a few rebellions before they can stabilize their control over the dukedom.
However, Blanc is fine with this. He knew that there are consequences for every action and that includes both him and Duke Dumont.
Duke Dumont decided to invade their city so it was inevitable that soldiers would die in the process. If they choose to be kind to their enemies, then they also choose to be cruel to themselves.
In the end, the only way to bring true peace is to be united under a kind and compassionate ruler who is also ruthless to his enemies.
Even then, it is only "true peace" to those who have submitted to that particular ruler.
Still, it is better than living under incompetent leaders.
After a few more hours, all four thousand men along with the nine battalion commanders were in formation behind their General Helena.
The citizens wished them good luck as they steadily marched forward until they disappeared into the horizon.
As for who will guard the city while they are away from the city, Blanc together with seven hundred lightly injured men is more than enough to defend against bandits and predators.
A month and a half passed.
Helena and her 4000-strong army are nearing their destination, the Dumont Dukedom.
Meanwhile, inside Duke Dumont's castle, Duke Dumont and his aides are panicking and arguing.
There has been no word at all from their army and a large army carrying the banners of Resonance City was spotted marching towards their Dukedom.
"Shit! Where is that stupid envoy?! Call that envoy here!"
"Yes! This is all the fault of that envoy!"
"Why are you blaming my son?! He just did his job!"
Intense arguments can be heard inside Duke Dumont's meeting room.
After a while, the envoy entered the room, escorted roughly by two guards.
"You! This is all your fault! You told me that there are only 1,500 low-quality soldiers in that city! Then why is there a 4000-men army invading us now huh?! Explain!!!"
Duke Dumont's veins popped and his eyes were red due to anger as he asked the envoy for an explanation.
"Y-Y-Your e-excellence, p-please forgive me, I only did see 1,500 men in their training grounds, even if they add in their city guards, there should only be around 1,600 in total so I don't know how they suddenly have 4,000 men…"
The envoy hurriedly explained.
"Ridiculous! Incompetent! Men! Cut this envoy's head for me!"
Duke Dumont ordered.
"Oh no you don't!"
An old man who seemed to be one of Duke Dumont's aides tried to attack Duke Dumont with a small hidden knife but unfortunately, he was unsuccessful as he was caught by the guards before he even managed to get his hands on Duke Dumont.
This aide was the father of the envoy so it was natural for him to fight for his son's life.
Unfortunately for him, he failed so both he and his son were killed on the spot.
"Hear me! Recall all ten thousand soldiers to defend the Capital! Let the villages, towns, and other cities fend for themselves. Protect me at all costs!"
Duke Dumont just issued a ridiculous order but instead of frowning because of the selfish order, the other aides instead nodded in agreement.
Just from this, it is evident that Duke Dumont and his aides were nothing but incompetent leaders. They didn't even care about their citizens.
A few more weeks passed.
At this point, Helena and her army have conquered all of the villages, towns, and cities under Duke Dumont's rule because they have no way to protect themselves. The leaders of those settlements just chose to directly submit to Helena.
After changing the banners of those settlements to the banners of Resonance City, Helena and her army marched towards the Dumont Dukedom's Capital, Dumont City.
After a few more days,
Helena and her army finally arrived in front of Dumont City.
As expected, they were greeted by Duke Dumont's 10,000 remaining soldiers. A young inexperienced general who seemed to be recently promoted was leading the whole army.
Helena almost laughed after seeing the enemy's formation.
"How fragile…"
She thought to herself. After a while, the general himself acted as a messenger and shouted ridiculous words to them as if they were the victims.
"Invaders from the backwater city! How dare you invade our Capital?! The citizens here are living peacefully and happily under the rule of Duke Dumont but you and your evil men decide to destroy that peace!"
"We shall strike you down in the name of justice!"
After saying twisted and idiotic words, the young general immediately turned around to return to his army.
"What an idiotic messenger, he wouldn't even listen to us! Well, no matter, men! Do not be discouraged by the words of that fool, he's just twisting facts."
"Never forget that they invaded us first and if we failed to defend ourselves that time, your family will be the ones to suffer or even perish!"
"Being kind to your enemy is being cruel to yourself! Throw away your doubts! Glory to Resonance City! Charge!!!"
