Lennox expected Adrienne to put a distance between them after witnessing how cruel he could be, but to his surprise, she showed compassion and understanding instead. He'd never pretended to be a good man from the start, and Adrienne knew what kind of person he was prior to their marriage.

Adrienne saw the pain and darkness in his eyes, yet she chose to love him unconditionally. She saw beyond his flaws and accepted him for who he truly was. Truth be told, Lennox thought he might not be so different from Alistair. Though he was active in dealing with his underground connections, that didn't mean his hands were entirely clean. It was just that he was careful not to leave traces that could lead back to him.

"I'm sorry," he heard Adrienne say as she silently sobbed in his embrace. Her hands fisted at his shirt. "If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have to endure this pain in our marriage."
