Trace awoke to be greeted by the same sky he was always greeted with. The three suns beamed at him, reminding him off this new world he was in. By the position of the suns, it was probably the afternoon. Or maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was nighttime in this damned place, and when it went dark, it was actually daytime.
Trace suddenly remembered the events of yesterday, and he immediately whirled into a sitting position.
He sat on a stone that face a serene pond. This pond seemed to give off a lot more chilling aura than his river. In the middle of the pond, a woman sat, giving off not so much as a ripple to the surface of water beneath her, as if she wasn't really there.
Now that he was paying attention, he could finally examine his savior.
And by the heavens or whatever the hell counted as a deity, this woman was beautiful.
She would put the whole population of women on earth to shame. Her features were absolutely delicate, and she wore the most exquisite clothes Trace had ever seen. He couldn't see her body properly, but he had no doubt that she would have a womanly figure. His eyes were then drawn to her belt.
Blue intermingled with black in the most exquisite pattern Trace had ever seen. The black was a complete void, standing out against everything, yet the blue was so rich and vibrant that Trace felt as if he was seeing a new shade of blue.
"It seems you are awake." The woman said, slowly opening her eyes. Sharp, crimson eyes stared at Trace, making him feel as if she was staring through his soul. Her voice was delicate as well, soft and soothing.
"Yeah. I guess so." Trace said warily, activating his bloodline talent. He wasn't sure who this woman was, but he wasn't about to trust her.
Plus, his stamina was fully restored, so he could use his bloodline.
The woman's lips curled into a smirk. "That's a powerful bloodline. How lucky you are. And, it is quite unexpected for a Goblin to know how to talk in such a refined way, even with the System translating."
Trace's eyes widened at that. So the System basically eliminated language barriers? But he did not deactivate his bloodline talent.
The woman frowned. "Alright, fine. I should introduce myself, shouldn't I? Well, I am Crimson. You? And do not worry. If I wanted to kill you, you wouldn't be able to stop me."
"Fine. I'm Trace." Trace said, deciding not even to lie. He had no doubt that this woman could kill him with a wave of her hand. It would be best not to lie.
"Interesting. Now, I'll head straight to the point, Trace. I some questions for you-" Crimson was beginning to say, but Trace interrupted her.
"Answer my questions first." Trace said, not deciding to give up this valuable opportunity. Also, he was acutely aware that he was still naked.
Crimson frowned at him. Trace was worried for a few seconds, but then she shrugged. "I guess it's fair. I'll answer your questions. Then, you answer mine."
"Alright." Trace rubbed his chin. "What's a sector?"
"A cluster of thousand of planets, stars and the like. We're in a C-Grade sector."
"So a galaxy, then?"
"I have no idea what that is."
"Alright. What's Essence?"
"A lower form of energy that permeates the multiverse. There are other types of energy. Essence can be used in the F-Grade. From E-Grade you unlock the ability to weave Qi, then forge Chakra in the D-Grade, craft Reiki in the C-Grade, and use the Daocore in the B-Grade and above."
"I see... Now, what is a cultivator?"
Crimson sighed. "Cultivators are people who can gain levels by drawing in ambient Essence. You are a beast, so you can't cultivate. Instead, you have to eat cores of other beasts or kill."
"Cores?"
"A core is something prevalent in a beast once they gain a class. It's like a source of power, and it can aid cultivators in their cultivation. If a beast gets strong enough, it can become a humanoid beast. Humanoid beasts are extremely powerful and can even blend in with cultivators. It's funny though, as Goblins are the only weak and dumb humanoid beasts in existence."
"Wait, I'm a humanoid beast?" Trace asked.
Crimson rolled her eyes. "Yes. Cultivators can be any size, shape, or color. There are a myriad of races under the Dao. Humans are just the most numerous."
"Okay," Trace nodded slightly. "Now, what is the path of progression?"
"There are multiple paths. In the F-Grade and E-Grade your progression will be similar to cultivators. However, in the D-Grade, cultivators develop their Cultivator Core. Since you as a beast will have had your core since F-Grade, you will need to undergo a process named 'Core Refinement'. As a beast, you are powerful, but progression is slower."
"I see..." Trace nodded. It seemed that killing and leveling up were a lot more complicated than he realized. Perhaps when he got a Core, he would be able to use Essence?
Trace had a couple more questions, such as what was the Dao, how strong Crimson was, if she could stop the demonic incursion, or why she was here, but he could see her patience wearing thin.
"Final question," Trace said. "What is the System?"
Crimson frowned. "The System goes by many names. The Boundless Heavens. The Ruthless Heavens. The Malicious Heavens. To learn about the System, we'll start from the beginning. The System originated like so..."
...
There was once a king who was said to be at the very peak of cultivation. His empire spanned universes.
This king was ambitious, and so he decided to start working on a project. A project to create the strongest warriors of the multiverse.
This project took eons to work on. Tireless nights, billions of workers, betrayals, and sabotage. Finally, the king had finished his project. He called it 'The System'.
And then, when the king finally deployed his project, it showed one message.
[Not enough resources...]
The king was suddenly killed swiftly by the System. This was followed by billions of his workers. His whole kingdom was driven to the ground.
The System then disappeared, just like the king and his kingdom.
A few million years later, the System returned.
[Resource Criteria has been met!]
Throughout the multiverse, this message was shown to every single monster, sentient plant, world spirit, curse spirit, realm spirit, tool spirit, and cultivator.
It soon became clear that many things had changed, as the System had constrained and categorized the myriad Dao itself. Gone were the cultivation levels and cultivation through meridians, and instead empowering through levels was introduced.
Over time, people shot to the peak of cultivation. These people, believed to be as strong as the nameless king, could bend the System to their will. Each brought a Dao into the light of the System, or 'Heavenly Path'. Some made it so non-combat classes could climb to the top. Others made the merchantile system or the ability to impose System contracts.
And now, the System is our very way of life.
...
Trace's eyes were practically bulging out of his sockets. He hadn't expected the System to have such a bloody backstory.
"Those people the king worked with were thought to be numerous A-Grades. Thus, the System is practically all-powerful." Crimson said. "Now then, my questions."
Trace sighed. "Sure."
"Are you a reincarnate?"
