The first was a TM containing the move Double Team, and the second was a rare Full Restore. Both were extremely useful to Sato in his current situation. The TM could be learned by all four of his Pokémon, and the Full Restore was a precious life-saving item.
With the combined loot from the Wild Wolf Gang members, Sato now had 1.05 million PokéDollars, solving his immediate financial crisis.
Additionally, by chatting with the innkeeper until 1 a.m., Sato had gathered quite a bit of useful information.
The innkeeper was an elderly man who had once been a modestly famous civilian trainer in his youth. He had traveled extensively, even reaching the distant Kalos region in the west, and was quite knowledgeable as a result.
From the old man, Sato learned that Viridian City did have a Pokémon Contest Hall, established just two years ago. However, since the profession of Coordinator was still primarily popular in the Hoenn region and had yet to catch on in Kanto, contests in Viridian City were held only once a month.
The old man, being a traditionalist trainer, spoke with disdain about Coordinators, a relatively new profession in recent years. He told Sato that Coordinators were merely failed trainers who had given up on the path of battling, and he advised Sato not to be misled into following such a path.
Finally, the old man provided crucial information on the routes Sato was most concerned about. He explained that there were two main ways to reach the Hoenn region from Kanto quickly.
The first option was to head to Saffron City, where planes flew directly to Mauville City in Hoenn. The second option was to travel to Vermilion City and board a ship that sailed to Slateport City in Hoenn.
The old man also informed Sato that the Viridian City bus station had only one bus departing for Saffron City and Vermilion City each day, and it left at noon.
Armed with this information, Sato had his day planned out. The first task was to head to the Contest Hall, where he would use the Berry Mixer inside to make enough PokeBlocks. The second task was to head to the Viridian bus station and catch the bus to Saffron City.
When it came to choosing between flying to Hoenn from Saffron City or sailing from Vermilion, Sato didn't hesitate much. Though flying would cost significantly more than taking the ship, time was of the essence, and he needed to get to Hoenn as quickly as possible.
Flying to Hoenn would take no more than a day, while sailing would take at least three to four days. The time saved was obvious.
Due to the tight schedule, Sato decided to skip his Pokémon's morning training. After a quick breakfast, he set off directly for the Contest Hall.
Though the Viridian City Contest wasn't particularly popular, as it was an official event, the venue was located in the city center—the busiest part of town.
After yesterday's events, Sato's Growlithe had matured a lot. It no longer stubbornly insisted on being outside its PokéBall and now quietly stayed inside.
As a result, Sato, dressed in simple trainer attire, blended in seamlessly and followed the signs to the city center without drawing any attention.
Soon after, with the help of a kind local, Sato finally found the location of the Viridian City Pokémon Contest Hall.
Even though the Contest Hall was built by the official Pokémon League, the building still had a stylish and grand appearance, designed to resemble a flower bud about to bloom.
Today appeared to be a contest day, as the Contest Hall's exterior was already bustling with trainers dressed in various elegant uniforms. They were using special training tools to rehearse their Pokémon's moves.
Because these were performance-based competitions, the moves of these Coordinators' Pokémon were incredibly flashy, attracting a sizable audience—mostly children—who gathered to watch.
Sato's arrival, clad in his trainer uniform, didn't attract much attention. He, too, paid little notice to the festive performances going on outside as he made his way directly into the Contest Hall.
Compared to the lively scene outside, the interior of the hall was much quieter in the early morning. Aside from a few working staff members, there were only two people inside, including Sato, making the entire lobby feel rather empty.
Berry Mixers, the tools used to make PokeBlocks, were easy to find in the Contest Hall. As soon as Sato entered, he spotted one on the far left side of the public lobby, standing there unused.
"Great, I've finally found the key tool to make PokeBlocks. Now I can carry out the next phase of my training plan," Sato thought, relieved after spotting the Berry Mixer that would be crucial for strengthening his team.
Sato had fewer than 20 PokeBlocks left, and if he didn't replenish his supply soon, it would severely impact his upcoming training sessions. Moreover, his plans for earning money would also be hindered.
Like the Rocket Team's underground base in Pewter City, the Berry Mixer in the Contest Hall was rarely used. Most people weren't willing to spend the high fee to use it, as it cost 1,000 PokéDollars per session.
Most Coordinators came from humble backgrounds and couldn't afford such expenses, especially when they couldn't control the quality of the PokeBlocks produced. As a result, the Berry Mixer often stood idle, rarely used.
With only 8,500 PokéDollars left in his bank account, Sato had no choice but to head to the counter and deposit 100,000 PokéDollars in cash into his account to ensure he could afford to use the Berry Mixer.
During his wilderness survival trial, Sato had come across many berry trees in the wild, especially trees bearing Oran and Pecha Berries, which were the most common. As a result, he had stockpiled about 300 of each.
Though Pecha Berries weren't as sweet as Nanab Berries, they could still be substituted as ingredients for making PokeBlocks. Interestingly, while each of Sato's four Pokémon had slightly different tastes, they all shared a preference for sweet-flavored PokeBlocks.
Just as Sato was about to start making PokeBlocks, a stylish, handsome boy entered the Contest Hall and immediately fixed his gaze on Sato.
