"One step…" Max said, "...and I don't think a six-year-old can recover from brain damage."

I stopped in my tracks and looked at the screen with my breathing uneven. I didn't know what to do or how to react. He was holding the phone so indelicately in his hands—one move and it could even kill my son. I could lose Andrew.

I didn't know something could be so scary.

"Max," I whispered. "Keep it down."

"Oh, I like this. Do I hear fear in your voice?" He smirked and dangled more with his phone.

I scoffed. "Max, it is a child's life you're playing with!"

"Your child, Xavier," he smirked. "Let's not take the fun out of it."

"What do you want?" I asked. "What do you want in exchange for my son and Scarlet's life?"

"Well, now the obvious question again," He kept the phone back in his pocket and I heaved a sigh of relief. "If you promise to not be over smart, I am sure we can come to some sort of… conclusion."
