Chapitre 1: Ignore This, Or Not

I was trying to post a chapter, but it kept saying there was a Chinese or Korean name or character. I had to discard the chapter because I couldn't see any Chinese or Korean shit. I am very angry. So, I'm just gonna post this.

Even when I try to publish this, it still keeps saying this

GRAND LINE

The Grand Line is an ocean route approximately located around the entire equator of the world, south of the North and East Blues and north of the South and West Blues. It is separated from the Blues on both the north and south ends by the Calm Belt. The Grand Line is split into two sections by the Red Line: the first section is known as Paradise and the second is known as the New World.

Reputed as the "pirate's graveyard," the sea and the islands possess a vast number of unpredictable phenomena that are not seen anywhere else in the world, many of which make sailing extremely difficult. Additionally, the Grand Line is home to the world's most powerful people and groups, including the Three Great Powers. Only one group, the Roger Pirates, has managed to fully sail across the Grand Line, and this achievement is what caused their captain Gol D. Roger to be labeled as the "Pirate King".

The Grand Line serves as the setting of most of the series, with almost everything since the Arabasta Saga being set in it.

Overview

"

Yes... The Grand Line... I've seen pirates who've managed to make it back from that voyage... They're broken men, almost zombies! You can tell just by looking at 'em... Whether pirates or monsters... They've seen terrible things. None will speak of it... But the sight of em's proof enough... The Grand Line is a place of horror!

"

— Gaimon[3]

The Grand Line is the gigantic sea route that circles around the planet, stretching from west to east.[4] It follows an imaginary line that runs from north-west to south-east across the middle of the world and perpendicular to the Red Line, a vast ring-like continent that circles the globe from north-east to south-west.[5][6] The Grand Line is placed similarly to the equator. In fact, the main importance of the Grand Line is that it is the only way to circumnavigate the globe.[5]

The Grand Line and the Red Line crossing each other is what divides the rest of the Blue Sea into four oceans[7]: the North Blue, the East Blue, the West Blue, and the South Blue.[7] As such, they are key to worldwide trade and travel in that the Lines are placed along the paths between the Blues. This makes them valuable routes of travel and obstacles for both pirates and civilians alike.[citation needed]

This stretch of ocean is said to be the most dangerous place in the world, and is commonly referred to as the Pirates' Graveyard ( Kaizoku no Hakaba?) by people from the Four Blues due to the presence of the Three Great Powers over it.[3][8] Despite the reputation of the Grand Line being dangerous and chaotic, many normal people manage a living on individual islands regardless, having adapted to their home land. This indicates that it is actually traveling within the Line itself that is dangerous, as it virtually guarantees facing unpredictable climates and dangerous wildlife. However, there are also several islands, or portions of the islands, which are considered dangerous in their own right, and thus, they are either uninhabited or the citizens have taken precaution to the threat.[citation needed]

Halves

The Grand Line is divided by the Red Line into two halves.[4] The first half, stretching from Reverse Mountain to the polar opposite point of the Red Line, is known as "Paradise".[9] The second half, which starts beyond the second Red Line point to the backside of Reverse Mountain, is known as the "New World".[10]

Paradise

Further information: Paradise

The first half of the Grand Line is known as Paradise (Paradaisu?).[9] Its name comes from people who have returned from the second half, claiming that the first half is like a paradise in comparison. It lies between East Blue and South Blue.[7]

Paradise stretches from the Twin Cape to the Sabaody Archipelago. Of the few pirate crews that are actually strong and skilled enough to hold their own in the Grand Line, a very small number of them actually make it all the way to Sabaody.

New World

Further information: New World

The second half of the Grand Line is known as the New World (Shinsekai?).[10] Its name comes from it being "a whole new world of adventure" compared to the first half. It lies between North Blue and West Blue.[7]

This stretch of the sea is where a number of powerful groups, including the Four Emperors reside, each holding their own respective territory.[11] Marine Headquarters is also located in the New World, following its relocation after the Summit War of Marineford.

The only people known to have explored the New World entirely in the last 800 years are the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and his crew, the Roger Pirates.[10]

Climate

Further information: Island Climatic Types

"

On the Grand Line, you can't trust the wind, the sky, the waves, or even the clouds. Everything is treacherous. The only thing you can count on is the Log Pose!

"

— Miss Wednesday[12]

Cyclones are common on the Grand Line

The weather is unusual on the Grand Line to say the least, the standard rules of meteorology don't apply. The ocean currents and weather patterns are extremely volatile and inconsistent, they can drastically change in an instant; this includes water spouts, storms, blizzards, heat waves, thick fog, and many other such things.[13] There are also cyclones that seem to appear quickly and suddenly, they are remarked as being impossible to predict.[14]

The reason for these erratic currents and weather is because the islands on the Grand Line each have a distinct climate year round, most often falling into one of four basic categories: Summer, Spring, Autumn, and Winter. These types of islands each have four seasons of their own, ranging from Summer Island summer to Winter Island winter, giving the Grand Line a total of 16 different seasons.[15] That's not including islands with climates that differ from the basic four. It is the clashing weather patterns and magnetic waves generated from each island that causes the strange and unpredictable conditions on the open seas between islands.

Notably, the first leg of the Grand Line is especially chaotic. There are seven different paths that one can choose from to sail through. The clashing weather and magnetism of those first seven islands cause insane sailing conditions that are beyond nearly anything else in the first half of the Grand Line.

The only areas where the weather and currents are stabilized and predictable are the Islands and their nearby surrounding waters. This doesn't mean the weather will be calm and sunny, it just means that the climate won't suddenly swift as it does on the open ocean.

Navigation

The seven paths within the first half of the Grand Line that the Log Pose can take you through.

A normal compass won't work on the Grand Line due to each island generating its own magnetic field. In order to navigate the Grand Line, one needs a special type of compass known as a Log Pose.

The Log Pose works by locking on to the magnetism produced by one island and points toward that island. After reaching said island and staying there for a certain amount of time, the Log Pose will reset and start locking on to the magnetism of the next island. The time it takes for a Log Pose to set is different on each island; it may take a few hours, it may take a few days, or even a full year.[16][17]

A Log Pose for the first half of the Grand Line has only a single needle. Alternatively, a Log Pose for the second half has three needles. Each of the three needles locks on to the magnetic waves of one of three different islands. This is because islands in the New World tend to experience changes in their magnetism. Therefore, if you lose the magnetism of one island, you still have two backup options. Furthermore, changes in magnetism can be caused by abnormalities on the island, the unstable magnetism of the island resulting in the corresponding needle jiggling. The trick is to follow the needle that is most stable.

There is another type of Log Pose known as an Eternal Pose. This version of the Log Pose is permanently locked on to the magnetism of a specific island and never resets. This makes it easier for a crew to get to a specific island, rather than following a regular Log Pose through a trail of islands.[18]

At the entrance of the Grand Line, there are a total seven different islands that a Log Pose can lock on to. Each one being the beginning of one of seven different routes that one can travel across through the first half of the Grand Line. The seven routes diverge from Reverse Mountain and travel east before reconverging at the Sabaody Archipelago.[citation needed]

As also noted at Water 7, small sea vessels such as caravels do not make it particularly far in the Grand Line and it was a surprise that the Going Merry had. Despite a crew's best efforts, it is difficult to keep a ship in good condition and avoid getting it battered by the Grand Line's natural hazards. Only good quality ships with knowledgeable crews stand a chance of traversing it safely.[citation needed]

Calm Belt

Further information: Calm Belt

A picture showing how the Calm Belts surround the Grand Line

One cannot sail directly into or out of the Grand Line; to the north and south of the Grand Line are two strips of ocean known as the "Calm Belt".[25] True to its name, the waters and sky of the Calm Belts remain perfectly calm at all times, meaning that there are no waves or currents, there is also no wind or weather, making it near impossible to cross without alternate means propulsion.

In addition to the lack of proper sailing conditions, the Calm Belt is home to a countless number sea monsters, known as Sea Kings; in fact, the Sea Kings found in the Calm Belts are the largest known Sea Kings in the entire world.[26]

The combination of no currents, no wind, and the presence of the Sea Kings makes the Calm Belt a perfect barrier to any traveler trying to directly enter or leave the Grand Line.[citation needed]

Most believe that it is completely impossible to safely enter or leave the Grand Line, save at its beginning and end, Reverse Mountain. However, the World Government regularly sends ships across the Calm Belts by coating their hulls with Seastone, rendering them invisible to the Sea Kings from below.[27]

Without using Seastone-lined ships and alternative propulsion,[27] the Grand Line can only be accessed at two points on the Red Line: Reverse Mountain and the Holy Land of Mary Geoise. The first is where the four major currents of the Blues merge together to form the Grand Line, while the second is the capital city of the World Government.[28][4][29]

Trivia

Most places in the Grand Line are known in the other oceans through the book "Brag Men", but are considered fairy tales to those who have never been there.[30]

The databook One Piece Green: Secret Pieces romanized its name as "GLAND LINE".[31]

PARADISE

Paradise is the name of the first half of the Grand Line given by pirates fleeing the New World, compared to which "the first half is a paradise". It is located between East and South Blue, and goes from the Twin Cape to Mary Geoise.[1][3]

Overview

The first half of the Grand Line, colloquially referred to as Paradise, stretches from the Twin Cape to Mary Geoise. Its name, Paradise, comes from people that have returned from the New World; the second half of the Grand Line is a whole "new world" of adventures beyond anything that one might face in the first half, it is such an abhorrent challenge that the first half of the Grand Line is referred to as "Paradise" when comparing it to the second half.[4][5]

The first half of the Grand Line possesses highly volatile and unpredictable weather conditions, and the first leg of Paradise is especially chaotic; Reverse Mountain and the Twin Cape are a great starting point, from there a Log Pose can lock onto the magnetism of any of seven different islands, each of which is the first island in one of seven different routes that one can travel through to traverse the first half of the Grand Line, however the clashing magnetic waves and specific climates of those first seven islands result in extremely harsh weather patterns and ocean currents that change every few seconds.

Every island in Paradise presents its own unique challenges, and the level of difficulty seems to increase the farther one travels. Regardless of which of the seven routes one chooses, they are all an equal amount of trouble to travel through, and they all lead to the same place, the Sabaody Archipelago. Shakuyaku likened the first half of the Grand Line to a giant tournament of survival, with those who make it all the way to the Sabaody Archipelago as the cream of the crop. A countless number of pirate crews have entered the Grand Line, though only a small handful have made it that far.

Overview

The New World is the second half of the Grand Line. It stretches from Mary Geoise to the other side of Reverse Mountain. The second half of the Grand Line is a whole "new world" of adventures beyond anything that one might face in the first half, it is such an abhorrent challenge that the first half of the Grand Line is referred to as "Paradise" when comparing it to the second half.[3][4] According to former Warlord, Gecko Moria, one will lose everything one cherishes in the New World, something he personally experienced. He also claimed that one shall face what he calls "The Ultimate Nightmare" there, indicating it is a very dangerous place for even the most powerful and talented pirates like himself.[5]

The four strongest pirates in the world, the Four Emperors, reside in the New World. The New World is also the current location of Marine Headquarters after it was relocated on Fleet Admiral Sakazuki's orders at the beginning of the new era after the Summit War of Marineford in order to better challenge the Four Emperors.

While the first half of the Grand Line possesses highly volatile and unpredictable weather conditions, the New World is even more chaotic. While certain islands are relatively simple in terms of weather and climate, such as the snowy Yukiryu Island and the rainy island the Kid Pirates were on, other portions of the ocean defy the very laws of physics and nature themselves. Examples include the lightning rain of Raijin Island, the Firetank Pirates being drawn toward a giant black sphere floating in the sky in the middle of the sea, and the On Air Pirates running on air.[3]

Islands in the New World experience changes in their magnetic waves, which makes a special New World Log Pose necessary so as not to get lost. Instability of an islands magnetic field can often be caused by abnormalities on the island. As a result of the unstable magnetic waves, the Log Pose needle pointing toward that island will jiggle, the more erratic the needles movement, the greater the instability of the magnetism. There are no guarantees, but the rule of thumb is that the erratic movement of a needle means that there is likely something dangerous on the island it's pointing to.

Islands within the New World

Islands of interest within the New World include Wano Country, where many expert craftsmen and legendary swordsman, such as Shimotsuki Ryuma, originate from[6], and Elbaf, the homeland of the giants.

Somewhere in the New World is an island with a special shop where Vivre Cards are manufactured.[7] The Marine Base G-5 also resides here, and according to Aokiji, it is full of problems. As is later demonstrated, the Marines of this base are wild and tend not to follow their orders.

The unfixed, seafaring Germa Kingdom (Sanji's home country) is currently located in the New World.[8] However, as the kingdom originated in North Blue, its rulers must possess some method of transporting dozens of ships across the Calm Belt.

Finally, the New World contains the island of Laugh Tale, the final island in the Grand Line. It is rumored that the legendary treasure of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger, One Piece, and the true history, found on the Rio Poneglyph, are located on this island.

Territories

This is a concept unique to the New World. Due to the presence of four powerful pirate crews under the reign of the Four Emperors who reside in the New World, all of them possess many territories widespread across its sea. These territories are used as the respective Emperor sees fit; for example, Charlotte Linlin has the territories she occupies make various sweets for her as tributes, with the citizens free to live as they please as long as they deliver on time; whilst Kaidou converted one of his into a weapon-making factory and enslaved all able-bodied citizens to work there. While this may seem like a dictatorship of a foreign power, the Emperor's claim over an island can actually protect the citizens from other pirates, though the situation varies greatly between the Emperor guardian. This is exemplified when Edward Newgate declared Fish-Man Island as his turf, as it caused the constant kidnappings of its citizens by other pirates to cease completely, even though the island was already affiliated with the World Government.

However, not all the islands in the New World belong to the Four Emperors. Some are under the protection of the Marines; others may have their own powerful military force like the Wano Country possesses (though it was later conquered by Kaidou); a few might be isolated or require special methods to reach it, like Zou; and certain islands may be under the jurisdiction of powerful or influential individuals like the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Trivia

Entering the New World in the anime.

The term "New World" is a reference to the Western Hemisphere (including North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean), which was nicknamed the "New World" during the era of European exploration/colonization. This was in contrast to the "Old World", or the Eastern Hemisphere.

In the anime, the New World is entered differently than in the manga. Instead of coming out in a sea of fire with thunder, the Straw Hats emerge into a storm, and effectively the Maubeugemour Sea

General Information

The people who reside there have small wings on their backs, similar to the stereotypical angel which make them really unique, though no use has been revealed for them thus far. The daily life of sky people revolves around the use of Dials, which normally are not available in the Blue Sea. As opposed to the belly of the rest of the world, it uses extols as currency. The people of Skypiea have a religious reverence for soil, because it can yield plant life much better than island cloud can, and also other materials that come from the Blue Sea. Most of the people from the Blue Sea believe that Skypiea is merely a myth. The currency used in Skypiea is Extol and 10,000 Extol is worth 1.

The inhabitants of this haven 10,000 meters above the ground are a kind, trusting folk naturally, although through the years the war with Shandia, the thievery of blue-sea dwellers and the harsh rule of gods has jaded them, leaving them with a bitter taste towards outsiders in general. This isolationism is in stark contrast to Fish-Man Island, 10,000 meters below the waves, who, while sharing the traits of kindness, had become largely swamped with outsiders.

Layout and Locations

Map of Skypiea.

Skypiea in general is located on an absolutely gigantic mass of fossilized clouds known as an Imperial Cumulus. This cloud seems to wander around the skies near Jaya and happens to be so dense that it manages to blot out sunlight almost completely, instantly darkening the portion of the Blue Sea where it floats by and giving the impression that nightfall has instantly arrived.

Skypiea is composed of numerous areas. Below the areas are listed in the order they would normally be encountered.

Heaven's Gate

For the chapter with the same title, see Chapter 238.

Heaven's Gate.

The Heaven's Gate (Tengoku no Mon?) is located in the White Sea and serves as an entrance to Skypiea. Visitors must pay 1,000,000,000 Extol per person to enter. Amazon, the gate-keeper that resides down here with her Vision Dial-powered camera, collects entrance immigration fees, and immigration for those who are leaving. She is generally unable to understand the events around her, as she lets people in without collecting fees, but not warning them they will become criminals. When everyone was evacuating Angel Island, she attempted to take images of them all, not realizing that Angel Island was about to be destroyed. Many outsiders become criminals for not paying the fee, because Amazon fails to explain Extol.

After going past Amazon, a giant Speedy Shrimp will grasp the immigrant's ship and lift it along a Milky Road, which goes up to the White-White Sea. Finally the guests will arrive in Skypiea. The Heaven's Gate was destroyed along with Angel Island by Enel's Raigo attack though Amazon was able to escape.

Angel Island

Angel Island and Angel Beach.

Angel Island (Enjeru Tō?)[2] was Skypiea's main residential district, composed entirely of Island Clouds. Bisected by the famous Lovely Street, it contained a wharf, houses, and many shops, and was usually patrolled by the White Berets. It was ultimately destroyed by Enel.[3]

Angel Beach

For the chapter with the same title, see Chapter 239.

Angel Beach (Enjeru Bīchi?) is where the Straw Hat Pirates met Pagaya and Conis for the first time.[4]

Lovely Street

Lovely Street.

Lovely Street (Raburī Dōri?)[5] is a rather well-known and well-traveled part of Angel Island. It is the main marketplace. The road has many shops, and is a sort of Skypiean main street. Shops of all kinds line the road of Lovely Street, including many Dial and food shops. There, Conis confronted the citizens of Angel Island, and gave her announcement regarding Enel's plan.

Gan Fall's Home

Gan Fall's House.

After being ousted by Enel, Gan Fall began living in this humble cabin positioned on the very outskirts of Skypiea, which is well beyond the range of Enel's mantra. It is surrounded by much flora, including an oversized tree and a vegetable garden to raise his beloved pumpkins in.[6]

After Conis and Pagaya implicated themselves by warning the Straw Hat Pirates of Enel's machinations, Gan Fall flew the pair here for protection. However, it would not be long before all three left - Gan Fall to answer a distress call from Tony Tony Chopper, and Conis and Pagaya in a general resolution to help the Straw Hats escape Skypiea.[7][8]

It is unknown whether this cabin survived Enel's Deathpiea assault, or if Gan Fall ever returned to it after being restored to his prior title.

Upper Yard

Further information: Upper Yard

This is the other half of Jaya, blasted up by Knock Up Stream 400 years ago. It is much larger than Angel Island. As a great amount of Vearth it is of high value for the sky inhabitants, being called "holy land". It had become residence for rulers of Skypiea, including Enel. The trees and Animals on Upper Yard have grown to huge sizes, due to the decrease in the atmosphere. Enel's priests ran their Ordeals here. A giant beanstalk, called Giant Jack, towers up in the center of the island, piercing through the ruins of ancient city Shandora and the God's Shrine. The Shandorian Golden Belfry resides on a cloud nearby. The Sacrificial Altar is also located in Upper Yard.

A Milky Road leads to Upper Yard from Angel Island.

Hidden Cloud Village

Hidden Cloud Village.

After being expelled from Upper Yard, the Shandia built this village for themselves, well-hidden within a pocket of island cloud.[9][10] Most of its dwellings resembled Native American tipi, while its roads were dominated by totem poles and a statue of Kalgara.

Like Gan Fall's home, the Shandia village was generally undetectable to Enel's mantra. However, it was finally discovered when Enel began his Deathpiea campaign, as the Ark Maxim allowed both him and his mantra to gain unprecedented heights. Moments after the panicked Shandia evacuated, the entire village was destroyed by a thunderbolt - save for the statue, which mysteriously survived intact.[11]

Wagomuland

Further information: Wagomuland

Wagomuland is a new amusement park that has opened up on Skypiea during the two years the Straw Hats were away. Its mascot and reason for existing is a crudely carved statue of Usopp, who first introduced rubber bands to the Skypiean people upon his visit there.[12]

Pumpkin Cafe

Further information: Pumpkin Cafe

Pumpkin Café.

The Pumpkin Cafe(Panpukin Kafe?) is a new restaurant that opened in Skypiea during the two year timeskip. Raki and Conis are working here together. The bowls and cups are in the shape of pumpkins. The restaurant is famous for its pumpkin noodles.

Residents

Skypieans[citation needed] are the people who come from Skypiea and live on Angel Island and other islands in the sky. The term "Skypiean" came from English dubs, and is not in the original Japanese, where the race was simply called Sky People (Sora no mono?).[citation needed] They first appeared in Chapter 238 and Episode 153.

The Skypieans are mostly a non-aggressive race who live peacefully on the Sky Islands. They use dials for everyday use, such as cooking. They have small wings similar to the ones found on the backs of the Shandia. They greet each other by saying 'Heso' (which is Japanese for bellybutton) often while putting their hand against their head and sticking two fingers up.

Appearance

Skypieans train their hair to grow like the antenna of an insect from a young age. Their wing style is very different from Birkans, styled closer to the Shandia wings. Their wings tend to have shorter feathers that are slightly less in number than a Shandia, often these feathers are thicker and more rounded. They are so close that at times the wings appear to be identical. However, the main difference between Shandia and Skypieans is that Skypieans often have lighter skin tones. They wear more simple civilian looking attire than the Shandia and Birkans.

Inter-Species Relationships

Because of their devotion towards their ruling cast and their value of Vearth, the Skypieans' ancestors entered a war with the Shandia over their homeland long ago, one which lasted 400 years. When the Birkans came along, they witnessed their caste system being abused by these newcomers and many of the Skypieans suffered under Enel's leadership because of his power. While the relationship with the Shandia was healed at the end of the war, leaving them to see if time would tell if the two races could get along, the remaining supporters of Enel were banished to a desert cloud.

Beliefs

Skypieans follow the Leadership of their ruling governor (whom they call 'God'). They rarely question the actions of their ruling caste, even when faced with the fearsome Enel. To the Skypieans, the ground from the Blue Seas below (which they refer to as 'Vearth') is sacred as plants do not grow without it in Skypiea.

Like the Shandia, they see no value in gold since they value Vearth.

History

Past

Early History

As seen in an ancient drawing in the city in the Moon, the ancestors of three sky people - Skypieans, Shandia, and Birkans - had lived on the Moon together a long time ago but once had headed to the Earth. Their further history mostly remains a mystery. At some point in the past, Skypieans settled in the region which is now called Skypiea. According to Gan Fall, Skypiea was around long before Jaya got thrown up into the sky. At those times, treasures from the Blue Sea would be knocked up into the sky, and the Skypieans would collect the spoils.

Emergence of Upper Yard and 400 Years War

Four hundred years ago half of Jaya, subsequently called Upper Yard, was knocked up into the sky. By that time it had been homeland to Shandia for many centuries. Upper Yard presented an amount of earth never seen by Skypieans before, and that is why they wanted it so badly that they fought off the Shandia to claim it. Kalgara, the Shandia leader, fought bravely to defend his home, yet he was killed in battle. The Skypieans successfully drove off the Shandia and claimed the Upper Yard. For 400 years, Skypieans and Shandia were at each other's throats. 6 years ago, Gan Fall wanted to return the Upper Yard to the Shandia to end the 400 Years War, but his negotiations failed to take place due to Enel taking over.

Twenty-two to twenty-six years ago, the Roger Pirates visited Skypiea and met Gan Fall.

Under Enel's Rule

Six years ago, Enel came to Skypiea with his men, after destroying his homeland Birka. He overthrew Gan Fall, claimed his position as God and became the despotic ruler of Skypiea himself. He settled in Upper Yard with his warriors and servants, but for Skypieans and all other people this island became a forbidden land on death penalty.

After Enel took over, all the citizens of Skypiea lived in constant fear of him. His highly developed mantra and ability to sense electric fields allowed him to hear conversations and thus made him aware of almost everything happening in Skypiea. If anyone dared to speak out against Enel or challenge his list of commandments, he would shoot a giant column of lightning down from the sky to effectively eliminate the dissenter. Enel made foreigners out to be criminals by imputing a crime for almost any of their actions (even snoring). Until they arrived for the Judgment, the inhabitants of Skypiea were responsible for guiding them there. Anyone would become criminal themselves upon helping a criminal. This gave birth to the citizens' sense of crime and they became feeble and weak.[13]

Sky Island Saga

Skypiea Arc

Soon after the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates, great events happen in Skypiea. Straw Hats fight against Enel and his subordinates. Shandia were also involved in this fight. Enel tries to destroy the whole Skypiea, and destroys the Angel Island, but in the end he is defeated. Those events reconcile Shandia and Skypieans, and thus the 400 Years War ends.

Skypieans and Shandia now live together in peace in Upper Yard. The Shandia have managed to win back their home while they help the Skypieans rebuild their own home.

Before Dressrosa Arc

Bellamy eventually reached Skypiea following the Straw Hat Pirates' route through the Knock Up Stream. Though his men did not survive the trip, he retrieved a pillar of gold and managed to return to the surface, where he presented the pillar to Doflamingo.

Cloudcutter is a tool used by the Skypieans to cut clouds in order to build houses and buildings in Angel Island. They are essentially very long saws that need at least two people to operate. Robin used a cloud cutter in order to get to Shandora that was buried deep beneath her. It first appeared in Chapter 240 and Episode 154.

Trivia

The ancient drawing depicts the three races of the sky. However, the drawings also appear to depict a group of people working together towards one goal. With this noted at some point the Shandorians, Skypieans and Birkans may have even been one and the same race (more believable since the Skypieans and Shandia wings are almost identical). Regardless of whether or not they were the same people, to date the history of them separating (or maybe just losing contact with each other) has not been mentioned in the storyline. In fact the only mentioning of a link to the three races past appears to be the Birkan's folklore about the Fairy Vearth.

According to Rurubu One Piece, Skypiea was inspired by Guatemala.

In general, the depiction and history of Skypiea and its people bears many similarities to the Conquest of America, during which European settlers tried to conquer and drive Indigenous Nations out of their homeland. Like those european settlers, the Skypieans took their homeland from the Shandia.

General Information

Arabasta is an established kingdom with a long history. It is located on Sandy Island ( Sandi Airando?); roughly half-way through the first part of the Grand Line. Sandy Island is a Summer Island. It is arguably one of the largest islands the Straw Hats have visited in the Grand Line, containing several cities and towns and a massive river.

Kingdom Information

Kingdom Name: Arabasta

Current King: Nefertari Cobra

Important People: Nefertari Vivi (Princess), Chaka (Head Guard), Pell (Head Guard), Igaram (Royal Guard Captain), Koza (Rebel Leader, Minister of Environment)

Current Affiliations: Straw Hat Pirates, World Government

Poneglyph: Yes (Tomb of the Kings)

Population: Over 10 million [4]

Architecture

Arabasta's architecture is very similar to Middle Eastern and Moorish buildings. However, the styles vary between cities.

Alubarna

The capital city of Arabasta has white, simple buildings. The palace is grand and resembles the architecture of Enies Lobby, except more colorful.

The city plan of Alubarna is round and similar to the old design plans of Iraq during the era of the Abbasid caliphate. Due to the Middle Eastern influences on Arabasta, it is possible that the city of Alubarna is designed based on Baghdad.

Yuba

The architecture of Yuba is generally circular buildings. All the tops of the buildings have thin logs. After the arrest of Crocodile, many people went to Yuba and tried to rebuild it.

Rainbase and Nanohana

Both Rainbase and Nanohana have similar architecture, with Rainbase's resembling a classic nineteenth century American town, with white walls, similar to those in Alubarna. Nanohana is extremely similar, but the designs seems closer to Alubarna's, with taller buildings.

Landmarks and Cities

Cities

Cities are central gathering places for the citizens of Arabasta. Arabasta is a very old country; there are few oases, but where they exist a town is likely built around it. Some older cities are now in ruins, while new ones also exist. The Sandora Desert is extremely desolate, and is usually only entered for travel. The cities are further divided by the Sandora River, which splits the country in half.

There are 7 known cities in Arabasta (8 if non-canon is included). Two of them are port towns situated on the south and east sides of the island.

Alubarna

Further information: Alubarna

Alubarna.

Alubarna is the capital city of Arabasta, and is rich in culture. It is an extremely large city, on a huge rock. Stairs are carved and paved for entrance to the city. It is extremely circular, and features both a clock tower and the Arabasta Royal Palace. Just outside the city exist the Royal Tomb, there is a forest where Zoro got lost in, and the Tomb of the Kings.

The Alubarna Clock tower is an extremely tall building, resembling Big Ben in England. There is a large open area at the very top of the tower. The top of the clock tower can only be accessed from the stairs on the bottom floor, and going up the stairs for the building it rests upon will get you nowhere. At the time, Crocodile planned to launch a bomb from there, due to the large open space and the close proximity to the Central City Square. This is a large, circular area where people can meet. It resides just outside of the Arabasta Royal Palace. The first and final confrontation between the Rebel Army and the Arabasta Royal Army took place here, at the climax of the Arabasta Arc.

Nanohana

Further information: Nanohana

Nanohana.

Nanohana is a port-town in south-east Arabasta. It is the central port city, and handles the most import and exports in all of Arabasta that goes to outside.[5] It is famous for its perfume, which is very pungent to those that aren't used to it. Nanohana is the "Little Flower" of Arabasta. Nano is an English word for "very tiny", and hana is the Japanese word for "flower". This possibly hints the city may have many cultures within it.

Yuba

Further information: Yuba

Yuba.

Yuba is a small town, only about 8–10 years old. It was started by Toto and his son, Koza. It has a very unique, dirt like style of architecture. This town was abandoned (except by Toto) after many sandstorms came. The Rebel Army relocated after this to Katorea. After the events of the defeated Crocodile, most people went to Yuba and try to rebuild it.

Erumalu

Further information: Erumalu

Erumalu is an ancient city. It was known as the Green City, but is now all ruins. The city itself resides in a region that lacks large amounts of rain.

Rainbase

Further information: Rainbase

Rainbase.

Rainbase is one of the few thriving towns left. The casino, Rain Dinners is here, and under it is Crocodile's base. A pyramid-shaped building, it seems like a normal casino, and acts as one. Behind the scenes, Crocodile was secretly scheming against the King.

Katorea

Further information: Katorea

Katorea is a city only seen very briefly. It is just north-east of Nanohana, a short ride away. The only view shown is in a filler scene where Chopper accidentally falls asleep in the back of a caravan and travels there, where he meets Matsuge the camel. While Nanohana is the city that is famous for its perfume, Katorea is where said perfume is made.

Tamarisk

Further information: Tamarisk

Tamarisk is a city located in Arabasta. This is where Hina arrived in Arabasta.

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

Ido

Ido is a city that was visited by a group of con men led by Camus who came there to take advantage of the town and get free food while posing as Rebel Army men.

Concludes non-canon section.

Landmarks

Landmarks are memorable places around Arabasta.

Sandora Desert

Further information: Sandora Desert

The Sandora Desert is a large desert that makes up the majority of the land of Arabasta that is not inhabited near oases.

Sandora River

Further information: Sandora River

The Sandora River is a large river the runs through Arabasta, right down the center.

Tomb of the Kings

Further information: Tomb of the Kings

Entrance to the Tomb of the Kings.

The Tomb of the Kings is the royal tomb where the members of the royal family are buried. It is just outside of Alubarna, located underground beneath ordinary tombs, and accessed through a secret staircase. It was destroyed by Nefertari Cobra in an attempt to kill Crocodile.

Ukkari Hot Spring Island Tunnel

Further information: Gedatsu's Accidental Blue-Sea Life

This tunnel consists of an underground passage that directly connects Arabasta to the Ukkari Hot-Spring Island.[6] It was accidentally dug up by the Dirt Boss, under the orders of Goro and Gedatsu, and then converted into a bus system for the transportation of customers headed by Hasami.[7]

Symbol

Symbol of the Kingdom of Arabasta.

The symbol of Arabasta Kingdom is a sun consisting of a circle with 8 curved drop shapes around it. It was first revealed in Chapter 130. When Vivi reads about the war in Arabasta the newspaper, a flashback of the kingdom's flag being burned is shown. The flag bears the sun sign. The shield of an Arabasta soldier in Chapter 182 also shows this symbol.

It is also seen on the sleeves of Sanji's overcoat and on Igaram's fan when he disguises as Vivi (the latter only has 5 shapes around the circle, though). Further, a Den Den Mushi seen in Chapter 216 shows a 6 shapes' symbol.

History

Past

Arabasta has a long, and illustrious history. According to Nico Robin, the country has existed since 500 years before the Void Century, perhaps even longer. The royal Palace of Alubarna predates the kingdom itself, having existed for around 4000 years.

800 years ago, the Nefertari royal family was one of the twenty royal families who founded the World Government. Notably, they are the only family to remain in rule of their own country, rather than moving to Mary Geoise and letting new royalty take over.[3]

The poneglyph, as read by Nico Robin, tells about the early days of Arabasta.

Robin, as Miss All-Sunday, recited a few events, until Crocodile interrupted her, not interested in the history of the country:

Kahira conquers Arabasta (Arabasta's history, date: Year of Heaven 239. Information supplied by Nico Robin)

The Bitein Dynasty of Taymar begins its rule (Arabasta's history, date: Year 260. Information supplied by Nico Robin)

Great Taph Temple completed in Erumalu (Arabasta's history, date: Year 306. Information supplied by Nico Robin)

The Hero of Oltea, Mamudin... (Arabasta's history, date: Year 325. Information supplied by Nico Robin, however she was not allowed to finish the sentence.)

This poneglyph supposedly only tells the location of the Pluton, but the specific details are not expounded upon.

Translation and Dub Issues

It was long debated whether the proper name was Arabasta or Alabasta. The error was because of the 'R' and 'L' pronunciations. On the map of Alabasta, it was spelled as Arabasta, hence the popularity. In Chapter 823, it was spelled as "Arabasta" on the sails of a ship.

An example of "Alabasta" spelling, in the anime.

An example of "Arabasta" spelling in the manga (volume 19).

An example of "Alabasta" in the manga.

Trivia

According to Rurubu One Piece, Arabasta was inspired by India.

Many things about and relating to Arabasta (i.e. the geography, architecture and culture) also heavily resemble elements of ancient Egypt and the modern Middle East.Arabasta's name may come from the Arabian Penninsula, which as a region has been known as "Arabia" for many centuries.

The name may also come from alabaster, a mineral commonly found in ancient Egyptian artifacts.

According to Crocodile, the prevailing winds of Arabasta always blow from north to south, which was why all his sandstorms continually hit Yuba.

SHIMOTSUKI VILLAGE

Shimotsuki Village[1] is a village in East Blue where the dojo in which Roronoa Zoro trained is located. It was founded by pirates, around 55 years ago.[2]

The village was named after Shimotsuki Kozaburo, a member of the Shimotsuki Family from Wano Country.

Isshin Dojo

Isshin Dojo in Shimotsuki Village.

Isshin Dojo (Isshin Dōjō?)[3][4] is a kenjutsu school, a school of Japanese swordsmanship. Its owner is Koushirou, who is a skilled swordsman and father of the deceased Kuina. It is the place where Zoro trained his Three Sword Style and in the anime is the only dojo Zoro did not take down the sign of.

It is revealed that 12 years before the current storyline, the town was visited by Monkey D. Dragon and the revolutionaries, and that the dojo assisted them with supplies for the injured residents of the Gray Terminal.

Culture and Geography

The village looks like a typical rural village in East Blue with green grass and mountains all around the village. The village also seems to have a lot of rice fields.

The village culture seems to be based on feudal Japan and their customs, much similar to Wano Country. The people here are also shown to be Buddhists.

History

55 years ago, Shimotsuki Kozaburo left Wano, and ended up in East Blue, where he saved the village from bandits. He eventually settled down there and started a family, having trained the villagers in swordsmanship as well.[5]

Translation and Dub Issues

The VIZ Manga translated the name "Shimotsuki" into "Frost Moon" when the village was first named in the manga. Thus, when the Shimotsuki Family name was revealed over a decade later, the connection was not made apparent. In Chapter 1033, when it was confirmed that the village was founded by and named after Kozaburo, Viz retained the name of the village as Frost Moon, but added "Shimotsuki" next to it in parentheses to indicate the connection.

Trivia

Shimotsuki Village was inspired by the Japanese city of Nara.[6]

The founding of Shimotsuki Village is very likely based on the famous Akira Kurosawa film Seven Samurai, in which the titular seven samurai train a group of farmers to combat bandits.

Shimotsuki is the traditional name of the month of November in the Japanese calendar.

The village's dojo was initially called "Shimotsuki Dojo" (Shimotsuki Dōjō?) in the Weekly Shonen Jump release of Chapter 1033, despite previously being named "Isshin Dojo" in One Piece Yellow: Grand Elements. This was corrected in the Volume 102 version of the chapter, where the dojo is called "Isshin Dojo".
