In a small, sand-colored house on the far edge of Sunagakure.
A ten-year-old boy with black hair and crimson eyes sat in a chair, tinkering with an arm. The arm was, of course, not a real one but a prosthetic.
Behind him stood a strikingly beautiful female puppet, lifelike to the point that one could easily mistake her for a real person at first glance. Every curve, every detail of her body was meticulously crafted, as if she were a piece of art brought to life.
"Finally, I've figured out how to incorporate a missile launcher into this thing. It took quite some effort. If I hadn't known about Pain's Asura Path and its missile capabilities, I might have settled for mere explosive tags."
He held up the arm, examining it from every angle. "OK, you can't even see a trace of it. Perfect~"
The boy admired the arm, which looked so real, with a hint of pride on his face.
However, it was quickly overshadowed by a heavy sigh. "Sigh, but one missile isn't enough. In the future, Sasuke seems to have a tool-summoning jutsu. He can instantly summon tools just by touching the seal on his arm. If I could learn that technique... Incorporating it into my creation would free me from so many limitations."
The boy's name was Shinra, a genin from Sunagakure.
But Shinra's status as a genin was questionable. He had never attended the ninja academy in Sunagakure nor participated in any exams. It was a title his uncle forced upon him, despite Shinra having no desire to become a ninja.
Oh, right, Shinra's uncle was the Third Kazekage of Sunagakure. Shinra was part of the Third Kazekage's clan and possessed the Magnet Release Kekkei Genkai.
Yet, despite the prestigious lineage, Shinra had no memory of his parents. His earliest recollections were blank, as if they had been wiped clean. His parents had died on a mission when Shinra was barely two years old, leaving him to be raised by the Third Kazekage.
"Raised" might have been too generous of a term, though. "Neglected" would have been more accurate.
The Third Kazekage was far too busy running the village to pay attention to Shinra. His idea of caregiving was to send someone to deliver food to Shinra every day, making sure he didn't starve. That was it.
Shinra still remembered the taste of the hard, stale flatbreads that had been his meals as a child. Have you ever seen a two-year-old trying to chew something that could break teeth? Shinra had. It was a wonder he hadn't choked to death back then.
It wasn't that the Third Kazekage deliberately neglected him; the demands of leadership simply left little time for child-rearing.
When Shinra was three, the Third Kazekage visited him and gave him three scrolls.
One contained chakra training methods and basic jutsus like the Transformation and Clone Techniques, another contained Magnet Release techniques, and the last was a Puppet Mastery scroll.
No mentor. No guidance. Just the scrolls. Shinra was left to figure it all out on his own, and whether he succeeded or failed seemed of little concern to anyone.
As the years passed, Shinra saw the Third Kazekage less and less, sometimes going an entire year without crossing paths.
Shinra preferred it that way. He stayed holed up in his small house, avoiding contact with others. Even when food was delivered, he waited until the delivery person was long gone before collecting it.
Shinra was simply too scared, afraid he might die at any moment.
He had developed a deep-seated fear of the outside world, a world where danger lurked around every corner and where, to Shinra, everyone seemed like cannon fodder.
Despite his isolation, Shinra was exceptionally talented. Without any formal training, he had managed to refine his chakra, master several Magnet Release jutsu, and even advance his puppet techniques far beyond what anyone could have expected. His unique perspective, shaped by knowledge that seemed beyond his years, led to innovative approaches in puppet creation.
In his own quiet way, Shinra had become a prodigy, though he rarely acknowledged it out loud.
But no matter how talented he was, he knew one thing with absolute certainty: this world was unforgiving. Even a prodigy with a rare kekkei genkai like Magnet Release was just a high-grade piece of cannon fodder.
"I may be a prodigy," Shinra mused, "but in this world, talent alone isn't enough to guarantee survival." He understood all too well that even the most promising shinobi could meet an untimely end.
In the later battles, they were throwing meteors, leveling mountains, and even splitting the moon in half. How is anyone supposed to survive in a world like that?
It's just not doable.
So, he decided to leave the fighting to the main characters. After all, they're the ones destined to save the world. He would focus on staying alive, developing his skills, and living a peaceful life.
When Shinra was six, the Third Kazekage had visited him again.
That time, the Kazekage had noticed Shinra's puppet creations and had been thoroughly impressed. He even compared Shinra's work to that of Sasori, a genius puppeteer of Sunagakure.
Seeing such potential, the Third Kazekage had suggested sending the boy to the battlefield to gain combat experience.
The mere thought terrified Shinra to his core.
He was only six! How could anyone expect a child of six to survive in war? Especially when the Third Shinobi World War was just beginning to brew, with skirmishes already breaking out in various regions. War was nothing more than a meat grinder, a machine that devoured lives.
Shinra was convinced that if he went, he would die, so he flat-out refused.
He had initially planned to showcase his progress in Magnet Release, but quickly abandoned the idea. Demonstrating such skill would only hasten his deployment to the battlefield.
Shinra didn't have any strong feelings for Sunagakure. His parents were long gone, and he had been left to fend for himself, living alone on the outskirts of the village. He could count the people he had met on one hand and had only one friend.
The notion of sacrificing himself for Sunagakure held no appeal. Instead, he dreamed of honing his skills for self-preservation, perhaps finding love, and living a peaceful life away from the chaos of the shinobi world.
So, Shinra threw a tantrum, claiming he had a severe fear of blood and couldn't stand the sight of it. He also insisted that he was completely useless in combat, that he couldn't even master basic jutsu, let alone Magnet Release techniques. He said the only thing he could do was make puppets, and then he hid.
Of course, hiding was futile. The Third Kazekage found him in no time and gave him a good beating.
The Kazekage tested Shinra's abilities, but Shinra, playing dumb, failed at every jutsu. He even pretended to be clumsy with puppets.
This made the Third Kazekage lose hope in him, thinking that Shinra only had a bit of talent in puppet-making but was useless in every other aspect.
The Third Kazekage gave up on the idea of sending Shinra to the battlefield and instead assigned him to make puppets for the puppet masters in Sunagakure. He also suggested that Shinra focus on starting a family in the future, to increase the number of ninja with the Magnet Release kekkei genkai in Sunagakure, indirectly boosting the village's strength.
Shinra, however, had little interest in mass-producing puppets for others. To date, he had only made two puppets for other ninja.
But to be fair, a puppet made by him was a masterpiece. Even though he only spent a day casually making those puppets, they were far superior to anything produced by other puppet masters in Sunagakure.
Shinra carefully picked up the arm on the table and gently attached it to the female puppet behind him.
Once it was securely in place, he stepped back to admire his work, nodding in satisfaction. "Perfect~"
The female puppet had a stunning figure with curves in all the right places. Her face was modeled after Shinra's own, but feminized.
Not to brag, but Shinra knew that when he grew up, he'd be a total heartthrob. So, a female version of his face was, of course, incredibly beautiful.
Shinra had named her "Kannazuki."
