Chapitre 6: Chapter 6

-You're slow Aang! - Pakku barked as his students trained. - Avatar or not, you must be better if you want to live up to my expectations. - He noticed that Katara was looking at the stairs. Sokka stood there, Akela next to him. -What do you need, Sokka? - he asked the young tribesman, approaching him.

- Sifu Pakku, can we talk in private? - Sokka asked formally.

Sifu Pakku looked at him with curiosity and confusion, and then nodded in agreement.

"Practice your techniques before I return," he told his students. He led Sokka down the steps through the city until they reached a secluded area. - What do you want? he asked when they were out of sight.

"I want you to teach me waterbending," Sokka told him.

Pakku started laughing. It was something he had never heard before. A person who is not a magician wants to learn water magic? It was just funny.

"You want me to teach you water magic when you're not even a magician?" - he asked rhetorically. - You will be a disgrace to me and my teaching.

He bowed his head.

"I'm sorry, I meant that you should teach me how to bend on water without bending," he tried to explain.

The laughter stopped.

- What are you talking about? You can't bend water without bending.

Sokka cursed quietly to himself. He should have explained it better. He could do it.

"What I mean is, please teach me the basic stances and sets for waterbending, that's all."

Pakku remained silent, looking at Sokka's bowed head.

- Why?

- Because there is someone who can come for Aang and who is stronger, faster, better than me. And I only have a machete, a club and a boomerang.

- You forgot about your intelligence and ingenuity. "What he lacked in waterbending abilities, he largely made up for in intelligence. Give him a few years to perfect them, and Pakku was sure that few, very few, would be able to match his wits.

- It won't be enough to defeat this guy! - Sokka suddenly shouted, annoyed that the elder did not understand his words.

In the silence that followed, they stared at each other.

- Is there another reason for this request? - Pakku asked suspiciously. Sokka nodded his head. Reaching into his shirt, he pulled out the locket he found (for some reason he just couldn't explain, he felt more at ease wearing it). When the waterbending master saw him, his eyes widened in surprise and shock. "I see," he said. He turned and walked away. He stopped and looked around. - Just because you're not a Mage doesn't mean I'll treat you lightly. In fact, I'm going to push you to your limit, and then I'm going to make you break that limit, okay? "His expression was harsh, almost unforgiving.

Sokka knew that meant his request had been granted.

"Yes, Sifu Pakku," he answered. As he followed Pakku to the training area, he tried to hide his smile from Pakku. He wasn't sure it worked.

(End flashback)

"It's been a long month," Sokka said to himself. Pakku wasn't kidding when he said he was going to push Sokka to his breaking point. This man was relentless. Other men would have given up or run away, but Sokka was stubborn. He had to do this, had to know how to fight unarmed if the time ever came when he wasn't there. Eventually his stubbornness worked and he began to improve. He also began to observe the way Aang moved when he practiced Airbending. As he got better and better, earning praise from Pakku, for some reason unknown to him, he also received silent disapproval from Katara. Aang didn't understand what Sokka was doing, but he didn't mind.

Sokka looked up at the night sky and saw the full moon. For a moment, he thought about Yui and felt a pang of guilt.

"Come on, it's time for us to sleep," he said to Akela. He headed towards the stairs leading below the deck, and the puppy followed him. "And if you fart in my face again, you'll sleep in the crow's nest." - The puppy simply looked at him defiantly. As the two of them walked towards the stairs, Sokka saw Katara and Aang talking. He heard the words "Avatar" and "scary," but he continued walking, wanting to fall asleep quickly.
