Most cultures put the man before the woman and in this case the man is the dominant and the woman is a docile subservient and rely on the man as the provider. These norms can cause violence when the position of the man is challenged.

This has also lead to another form of gender-based violence which is early and forced marriages. Olivia Giovetti of Concern Worldwide writes in her article; Three Causes Of Gender-Based Violence (2019), that increased hunger, war and conflict have not helped the situation either. A survey conducted in Malawi in 2013 indicates that 61% of women and girls said they had experienced sexual violence while 64% had experienced physical violence and the ongoing food crisis only worsened the situation.

Women and girls face early marriages during these times as their families sell them off for dowry. Money shortages increase the tensions within families which increase the levels of violence.
