Jack and Samantha began walking back toward their apartment together. The awkward tension from earlier had eased a bit after Jack had stepped in to help her. The city streets were bathed in the warm orange glow of the setting sun, making everything feel calmer. The conversation between them started off slowly but gradually picked up.
"So, you're new to the city?" Samantha asked, glancing sideways at Jack as they walked.
Jack nodded. "Yeah, I came here few days ago, and found a place to rent today."
Samantha smiled, "It's good, I can imagine how it's feel, few years ago I was also same. You look young? How old are you?"
"I'm 18, just finished my high school," Jack replied, slipping his hands into his pockets. "I'm trying to get settled and save up some money before deciding what to do next. Maybe college, but I'm not in a rush."
Samantha nodded, looking thoughtful. "That's smart, actually. Not rushing into things." She gave him a curious look. "What made you choose this city? Where did you came from?'
Jack hesitated for a moment before answering. "I needed a fresh start. Something different. Plus, I need get away from old city for some reason."
Samantha nodded, not asking the reason, "Well, it's same. I moved here after finishing college, and it's been a bit of an adjustment for me. But you get used and then city and place become like home."
They exchanged a few more bits of small talk, chatting about the city, their work, and little things about their lives. Jack found himself relaxing more around her. She had an easygoing energy made conversation flow naturally.
As they reached their apartment building, Jack glanced over at Samantha. "You live around here too?"
She nodded, looking up at the familiar building. "Yeah, I guess we do."
Jack chuckled. "I guess it before. Since I saw you in the hallways earlier."
"Same."
As they walked inside and up the stairs, an odd feeling crept over both of them. Something unspoken passed between them, like they were both thinking the same thing. When they reached the door to Jack's new apartment, they both paused and stared at it.
Samantha's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Wait… this is your apartment?"
Jack blinked, confused. "Yeah, this is the one I rented. There were supposed to be two roommates. You don't mean…?"
Samantha couldn't help but laugh softly, shaking her head. "No way. I think I'm one of those roommates."
Jack looked at her in disbelief. "Seriously?"
"Looks like it," Samantha said, amusement in her voice. "Guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other, Jack."
Jack scratched the back of his neck, laughing awkwardly. "Wow, I didn't expect this. I mean, I was told I'd be sharing the place with two people, but I didn't think it would girl, and you..."
Samantha chuckled again. "Well, now you know." She looked him over with a teasing smile. "Even if you did stare at me earlier, I suppose I can overlook it since you saved me."
Jack cringed inwardly at the reminder but quickly smiled. "I swear it wasn't on purpose."
Samantha smirked, clearly not convinced but willing to let it slide. "Sure, sure."
They both stood outside the door for a moment, still processing the strange coincidence. Then, with a shared glance, Jack unlocked the door, and they stepped inside.
But as soon as they entered, both of them froze.
Standing in the middle of the living room was another woman—one who neither of them had expected. She was breathtakingly beautiful, with long, wet hair cascading down her back. The towel wrapped around her body barely covered her, leaving her smooth, toned legs and shoulders exposed. Water droplets still clung to her skin, glistening under the light.
Jack's eyes went wide in shock. "Whoa…" he muttered, immediately regretting it.
The woman's eyes widened in surprise as well, her mouth opening slightly before she let out a startled gasp. She clutched the towel tighter around herself and darted out of the room faster than either of them could react, disappearing into one of the bedrooms and slamming the door shut behind her.
Samantha stood there, mouth open, utterly speechless for a few moments. Then, after a deep breath, she turned to Jack with an awkward smile.
"Well... that was Lena," she said, breaking the silence.
Jack blinked. "Lena?"
Samantha nodded, a sheepish look crossing her face. "Yeah, she's the second roommate. Lena Shaw. Guess she didn't know we'd be walking in." She shook her head, still half in disbelief at the whole situation. "Sorry about that. She probably wasn't expecting a guy to come this apartment."
Jack stood there, still stunned from the sight he had just witnessed. He blinked a few times, trying to clear his head, before managing to chuckle. "Yeah, I wasn't expecting... that either."
Samantha gave him a playful nudge. "Don't worry, Lena's usually more… covered."
Jack sighed, rubbing the back of his neck again. "I hope she doesn't think I'm some kind of pervert now."
Samantha laughed, shaking her head. "I think you're safe. But maybe give her some time before you start introducing yourself."
