The warm light slowly faded with the wind that surrounded them.Helena opened her eyes and was surprised when she noticed Theo in her arms wasn't transparent anymore. His short sandy hair and emerald green eyes were so much more vibrant than before. She could even see freckles on his lightly tanned skin that weren't visible before.
Helena looked for the bracelet and realized it was cracked, a bright light was spilling out of it and entering Theo. It seemed like as soon as she noticed it happening the bracelet was gone. "Theo? are you okay?"
Theo was surprised as well. "My belly feels strange..."
Was this hunger? He could barely even remember this feeling. What was happening?" Your bracelet broke Theo, didn't you say that bracelet was something you were stuck inside?" Shock overcame him as he understood what that meant, no he prayed he knew what that meant. He pleaded for so long to be alive again. "I think I broke out of it? ... Am I alive again? "
Helena thought about the item he was stuffed into.
Although rare, it wasn't that strange. But someone really powerful would have had to pull Theo's entire body into an alternate space. And encase it in magic.
"Did dad's magic break the original person's spell?"
While Theo was lost in his thoughts Helena noticed a house past a couple trees. It was beautiful, just like a painting. It had wooden siding and green moss patches along the roof and walls. It had large windows with curtains blocking the inside view and thick double doors in front. While clutching her dads storage pouch she reached for Theo's hand and tugged him towards the house.
Helena knocked on the door and called out to see if anyone was home. There was no response. It was starting to get dark out and she didn't know what to expect in another world. While she was contemplating what to do she heard a strange whistle in the distance. She decided she would try and open the door and stay somewhere safe for the night. Helena's resolved to apologize profusely if the owner came home.
Helena pushed the door open softly and peeked inside. There wasn't a speck of dust anywhere, there was no way it was abandoned. So she called out again "Hello? I'm a little lost and have nowhere to go. Is anyone home?" After a short silence from inside the house Helena couldn't ignore that the whistling was coming closer with alarming speed. She pulled Theo inside and quickly shut the door behind them.
"Hello, welcome home Helena" A voice behind them said ever so softly. Helena quickly spun around to see a light doll. Her heart was racing. "mom..?" As she processed what she was seeing, she was painfully aware it was just a light dolls recording. "I had a feeling you would want to come back here. Lennon sent you back here alone right? Since you are here you are old enough to become an adventurer now! Welcome home, This place belongs to you now. I used magic to hide this place from everyone but you."
A strange see through cube appeared in front Helena's face. It read [This home has been abandoned for longer than 2 years, and by law the first soul to enter gains rights to the property and everything in it. What is your name __________ ?
what is your age ___? ]
Like she was reading the future her mom walked her through the process to legally obtain this home as it happened. " I can't believe my baby is 20 now " Melina chuckled
"ah one moment Helena, mommy is here" Helena saw the light doll expand and she saw herself as a tiny baby being cradled by her mommy and giggling.
" Just in case you aren't 20 yet just know that once you reach that age you will have to travel to the closest main city and become an adventurer for 5 years. It's something that is required for everyone to do so the monster population never grows too large. After you turn 25 your life is yours and yours alone. Many people love adventuring about and never stop."
Helena had tears in her eyes as she watched her mom ramble on and on. Every so often she would see herself or her father would pop in and say something silly. Just like always he thought he was so funny and couldn't resist joking around. Theo was sitting with her and patting her back to comfort her.
Her mom walked around the house explaining what everything was, and told her about the world she called Garth.
Her mother's tone was suddenly really serious, unlike her giggly and happy atmosphere from before. "Helena be careful. I hope your life is easier than mine was here. Magic is really rare... if you don't take anything to heart that I've said so far that's okay. But please remember this, never. ever. agree to use your magic for the King of this land and create a pact. The moment you do that you are bound for the rest of your life to use it for them. No matter where you run or what you want, they will hunt you down. Many people will covet what you were born with. That's why I will never come back to this place. Live for yourself Helena."
The light doll was starting to flicker and dim. "Ah this light doll won't last much longer, Honey!! come say something to your daughter." Lennon's face appeared behind Melina's with his hands on her shoulders. "uhmm Helena, I don't know what you are like now but you are our baby. We believe in you Helena. We will love you no matter what you do. So go live the life you always dreamed of."
The light doll disappeared and the house was dark once again. There was so much information to digest. She felt exhausted and walked to the bedroom and fell into the bed. Sleep wasn't hard to grasp that night. She slept so deeply that no dreams came to her.
Light filled the room Helena had wandered into last night. She stood up and stretched her arms high above her head and yawned. Helena's stomach gurgled. She wondered if the things her mother showed her were truly still edible. The food was encased in magic, but was her mother so strong to keep food fresh for 20 years? Even the Grandmaster would have trouble conquering such a feat.
But Helena's stomach won the war and she decided to try this food her that mother left. Theo was staring at her with wide eyes and a watering mouth. As Helena opened the container and broke the magic cast around it. The whole house filled with the smell of a savory dish she'd never heard of until yesterday.
As soon as she took a bite she thought it was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted in her life.
The meat was soft and juicy like it was cooked moments before. It's incredible how it stayed good so long. Helena remembered her mom saying to try the beroln fruit pie. Helena was wrong. THIS was the most delicious thing she ever tasted.
Helena and Theo stayed in that house for three days. Helena was reading books and exploring the house.
She loves this house so much. She was intrigued by all the things her mother left her. There was a family portrait, and a potion making bench. She left a wall of dried herbs and it seemed like everything was kept up somehow by magic. Helena felt closer to her mother and could clearly feel that her love of magic was so similar to her own.
Theo cried when he actually tasted food. He was just happy to touch things again, be able to sleep and eat.
Life was wonderful. He decided to make sure to always protect the one who gave him this chance to live again. That was the moment Theo swore to protect Helena for the rest of his life.
Suddenly Theo and Helena heard something knock against the window of the house....
