The day went smoothly, at least better than the former and I couldn't wait to tell Balley about how the experiment back at the lab turned out. Doc Mac would have been the one to spoil my day, but I was used to his way of life and had a way of
dealing with it. His unnecessary nagging had a way of getting everyone exasperated. After the work of the day, I went to the police station to report the mysterious man, when I saw missed calls from Balley and Jacy and a message from Balley that read, "Call me soonest". My phone had been on silent and I didn't hear the calls or see the message. I dialled Balley's number, as I raced to my car.
'Hey bro, sorry I didn't see your ca_' I was interrupted by a female scream in the background, as Balley spoke up. 'Bro... come to the lab at Freeda now.' Balley said in a tremulous voice, as the call ended. I stepped on the gas, driving so fast and sounding my horn as I overtook vehicles. I couldn't just place what the problem was at that point, my mind was blank. I arrived the lab, running out of the car, not minding if the door was closed or not. The laboratory door was slightly open, so I didn't have to unlock it. I went in to see Balley pacing from one side of the room to another, with a baton in his hand and his free hand on his chin. The lab looked like a mess and there were broken lab apparatus all over the floor, with some chemicals that seemed to have corroded some fragments of papers that laid immersed. I wondered what could have made the whole mess, when Balley approached me, breathing so heavily.
'Bro you won't believe this....you' he said, trying to catch his breath. I held him tightly on his shoulders, supporting him. 'Com'on what's the problem? what's going on here....?' 'It's so horrible, it looks somewhat out of it, with scary green eyes bro.... You won't believe this' he had regained his composure, as he walked towards the other room. To my surprise, Jacy sat on the floor, tight lipped and expressionless, despite the fact that we got into the room. She looked kind of frozen. 'What's wrong with her?' I asked, moving closer to her and waving my hand in front of her face. 'Bro...I think there was a wrong mixture or something... that rat is huge' Balley's face looked masked with fear, as he went to the other side of the room, opening the blind a little to look outside.
'This suspense is killing me Balley...tell me what's up' I said, looking at Balley closely. 'Bro, could you check your mixture again? It's possible you made a wrong mixture, cause that rat looks like death. Just come take a look for yourself' Balley said, biting the bottom of his lip, as he led me to the store. 'It's right here' He said, opening the door of the store cautiously, leaving it halfway open. 'Look right there bro' Balley pointed, to a horrible looking creature with green eyes. At this instant, I doubted that it was a rat, because it looked like it came out of the asylum, as it turned, facing us, making Balley close the door immediately. The rat was wolfish, it had green eyes and scary teeth, sticking out from it's mouth, it could do nothing but growl fiercely at us, with spittle dripping from it's mouth and had a creased looking face.
'How the hell did that get there?..... who put that? Wait, is that my lab rat?' I turned, looking at Balley, feeling a whole bundle of nerves across my spine. Balley still looked startled, his eyes were shut for a moment, then he spoke up. 'What do you think bro? That shit is from your lab, I think it came out from one of the lab cages. I got a call from Jacy, she told me to call your phone cause she couldn't reach you and she said it was an emergency, so I got here as soon as possible, since your line was not going through, only to see this'
'O my.. what the hell is this' I gulped, with no particular thought in mind, I was confused. 'I think you just need to think now, did you make new mixtures? Did you give the rat anything? Take your mind back bro...' Balley said in a lower tone. 'Okay, here is what happened, I came here yesterday, only to find a particular rat I tested a sample on to be alive. I mean, it survived it. In fact I thought it was a breakthrough, I wanted to tell you about it, as soon as I saw you today....what could have gone wrong...' I said, feeling uneasy, as I looked over the remaining crates of samples. 'Shit!! what have I done. Bro, I have to get rid of these remaining samples. I don't know how I'd do it, nobody has to know about this. I felt like I was going to have a nerve wreck, as Balley tapped me on my back. 'You mean "we'', count me in on this. But let me get this clear, this was supposed to be the cure for the disease right?' Balley asked. 'Yes bro!! I thought this was going to be my big finish. Now we have to find a way to get rid of the remaining samples and the rat.' I sat down on the lab table, burying my face in my hands, thinking of what could have gone wrong, when I heard Balley's voice. 'Com'on bro, I think Jacy's fine now.'
We went into the room, to still see Jacy sitting on the floor, but this time, she looked better than how we left her and had started talking also. 'I think I know how we can get rid of that thing' She was probably listening in on our conversation and understood what was going on. Jacy was in the lab when everything went down and didn't understand what was going on until now. 'There are some sedatives up the shelf, we could use it to calm the rat down, till we know what to do with it' 'And how would we do that?' Balley asked. 'Someone's gotta use the injecting needle on it' Even though I didn't like Jacy that much, her idea was the best option we had to get rid of the monster, so we all agreed to it. The big question now was who was going to do it, who was going to take the bull by the horn. We all glanced away at ourselves, then Balley broke the silence. 'Okay okay, I'll do it' he said with a husk tone, as he moved to the shelf.
'Where are the sedatives?' He asked. 'I'm coming' Jacy said, moving to the shelf, while I went to the room to check for the baton Balley held, nobody could be sure about what will happen in these times.
'Okay, so I'll go into the store and try to inject it, while you stand at the door, incase it escapes, so you can hit it.' Balley turned back to look, if we were all in on the plan. There was silence for a while, then I nodded. Jacy moved back wincing a bit, as Balley opened the door. The store was a wreck, almost every item was lying on the floor and the rat was not in sight. 'Hey bro, seen anything?' Balley said quietly, moving closer, holding the injection with his left hand. 'Look!!' Jacy yelled, covering her mouth with her hands, as the rat tried to jump unto the window. I had not seen the rat clearly until now, it was almost a feet tall, with scary eyes, with an evil crinkled stare on it's face. It was a scary sight. It turned to us with a "scheeeeew" sound, as Balley ran towards it. 'Come on Willy, let's get it' I stood there confused or maybe the scary sight got me stuck in my shoes. 'Come here, you freak' Balley jumped on the fierce looking rat, struggling with it's neck, till he could finally inject it. 'I've got it!' he screamed, as the rat wobbled. Even if it gave him a scratch on his hand, I must confess, Balley was the man for the job. The day seemed more like a nightmare as we sat there thinking of how it all happened.
