I remembered the interior of the S.H.I.E.L.D. carrier looking impressive on TV, but seeing it in person stomped all of that into the ground. It was just too spectacular. The light silver color scheme worked seamlessly with the equipment constantly emitting beeping sounds at timed intervals.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. eagle was proudly displayed at the center, with agents sitting behind their symmetrically arranged workstations, talking into their earpieces. Others, holding files and folders, moved around in their form-fitting blue S.H.I.E.L.D. uniforms, the eagle emblem plastered on their chests. The ladies looked absolutely stunning.
I mean, wow, one of them just walked past me—what a sight! Don't you just appreciate a woman in uniform? I found myself thinking of all the ways I could take it off... puberty strikes again. Thank God I was wearing armor.
"Boss, you're staring," April's voice cut through my thoughts.
"Oh," I muttered as the agent saw me staring. She was smiling—why? Was my armor compromised? I looked down, but everything seemed fine.
"We're invisible, sir," Maria Hill stated, thankfully saving me from further embarrassment.
"Gentlemen," a voice called out, and I turned to see Nick Fury walking up to us. Steve pulled out his wallet and handed Fury ten bucks. Maria Hill raised an eyebrow, but Fury just smiled. Nearby, I spotted the guy Tony had pointed out playing Galaga. Yeah, he was still at it, tiny joystick and all. The audacity of this man, playing games while Fury stood right above him... He had my respect.
Fury turned to Banner. "Doctor, thank you for coming."
"Thanks for asking nicely," Banner replied.
"Speak for yourself," I said, walking past them toward the main station where Coulson stood.
"How long am I staying?" I asked.
"Until we find the Tesseract," Coulson answered.
"And how far along are you with that?"
"We're sweeping every wirelessly accessible camera on the planet—cell phones, laptops. If it's connected to a satellite, it's eyes and ears for us."
"First off, that's illegal, and you people have zero respect for privacy," I remarked. There was a moment of silence, and Steve cast me a meaningful glance. Fury finally spoke up.
"The whole world is in danger, and you care about privacy?"
"This is a slippery slope," I shot back.
"We do what is needed, what is necessary. This situation demands it," Fury said firmly.
'You're handing Hydra everything it needs,' I thought but kept it to myself. "Your call, Fury."
I walked out the door, only to return a few seconds later. "I can't find the restroom," I admitted, hearing Natasha stifle a laugh. Banner kept his head down, and Cap had his back to me. Fury sighed, clearly exhausted.
"Boss, Beta unit nanobots are active," April chimed in. I just needed an excuse to leave the room to deploy more nanobots—foresight for the win.
Outside, it was a starry night filled with the sounds of screams, groans, and footsteps as people ran across the black asphalt, trying to escape Loki. Clad in his beautifully crafted armor, with golden horns arching upward from his helmet, Loki grinned as he toyed with the humans. His scepter, glowing with a cool blue light, pulsed in his hand as if mirroring his amusement. The people had nowhere to run, surrounded by Loki's projections.
I clung to the side of a high-rise building, camouflaged, watching as Captain America, in his red and blue uniform, shield in hand, stealthily approached Loki. The Quinjet was ready to strike at any moment.
Loki pointed his scepter at an elderly man who stood defiantly. Despite the overwhelming odds, the man refused to bow. I couldn't help but admire him. This was humanity at its finest—defying gods, demons, and devils. I was hyped up, every hair on my body tingling. I wanted to punch a god right then and there, and Loki was standing right in front of me, ripe for the taking.
With both arms outstretched, I shot webs to a platform, forming a makeshift slingshot. Captain America deflected Loki's energy blast with his shield.
"The last time I was in Germany, I saw a man standing over everyone. We ended up disagreeing," Cap said, setting the perfect distraction.
I took a deep breath, focused on Loki, and released the web. Shooting through the air like a bullet, my gloved fist collided with Loki's jaw, a satisfying crack sounding as the impact sent him tumbling across the ground. The kneeling crowd gasped in disbelief, some offering prayers of thanks. Loki had been too preoccupied with Cap to notice my sucker punch.
I turned to Cap, who hadn't expected me to act so decisively. "He talks too much," I said, rubbing my throbbing knuckles. Cap almost smiled but quickly returned to his serious demeanor.
My Spidey sense kicked in, and I leaped away just in time to dodge a blast from Loki's scepter. He glared at me, blood dripping from his lip.
"Boss, Mr. Stark is here," April reported. Before Loki could react, a repulsor blast from Iron Man knocked him down, his scepter clattering away. The blaring music from the Quinjet only added to the drama.
This was my first time seeing Tony in person, and he didn't disappoint. His armor gleamed like a knight's, a marvel of modern technology. I felt an urge to geek out over the specs but managed to restrain myself.
As Tony landed with a thud, the concrete cracked beneath his feet. He raised his arms, aiming his weapons at Loki. "Make a move, reindeer games," Tony quipped.
Loki raised his hands in surrender, his armor disappearing. "Good move," Tony said, powering down his weapons as Cap walked up.
"Mr. Stark," Cap greeted between heavy breaths.
"Captain," Tony replied, glancing at me as I approached.
"You actually shot to thrill," I said, referring to both the music and the blast.
Tony smirked. "I aim to please. Nice piece of tech you've got there."
"Nothing compared to yours," I replied.
"What's your power source?" he asked, eyeing my suit.
"Graphene."
"You must be using multi-layered graphene plates," he deduced.
"Correct. It's constantly being charged by flexible piezoelectric generators and metamaterial photovoltaic cell clusters."
"That's how it takes the load while sustaining itself. Smart," Tony said, extending his hand for a handshake.
"Thanks," I said, feeling a sense of pride at being complimented by Tony Stark.
We secured Loki and headed for the Quinjet. As we flew back, Steve whispered to Tony that Loki's easy capture felt suspicious. Tony wasn't concerned, mocking Steve about his age. "Capsicle," he muttered, earning a laugh from me.
Suddenly, the Quinjet shook as thunder boomed outside. Lightning flashed across the sky.
"What's the matter, scared of a little lightning?" Steve taunted Loki.
"I'm not overly fond of what follows," Loki replied just as Thor landed heavily on the Quinjet, causing it to shake even more.
"We should suit up," I suggested, grabbing my gear as Cap took up his shield and Tony donned his helmet.
Thor stormed into the Quinjet, his eyes locked on Loki. Before anyone could act, Tony muttered under his breath, "Tourist." Thor, enraged, grabbed Loki and knocked Tony back with his hammer before flying off the Quinjet.
"You just had to say something," I said, helping Tony to his feet.
"I have a plan: attack," Tony declared as he prepared to jump out of the Quinjet.
"Mind giving me a ride?" I asked.
"Hold on tight," he replied, and with that, we shot out of the Quinjet together.
