If you look at him right now then you can see that he was fully serious. Well as the principal already told him that most likely he needed to fight with Fiona and only after that it will decide if he was qualified or not. 

If you look around him then you will find many other students already present in the playground. All of them are doing various things. Some of them train with their swords or other weapons. While some of them are also running around the playground.
