Placing his hand on the library door as he had done so many times before Thane muttered a simple unlocking charm underneath his breath before pushing the door open, 'It a miracle they don't have some kind of counter spell in place, so much for the safest place in the wizarding world.'

Closing the door behind him Thane didn't waste any time sneaking around instead making a beeline for the restricted section, knowing that Madam Pince wasn't in the library tonight. Thane bypassed the old iron gate that outlined the entrance to the restricted section with just as much ease as the first door and quickly made his way inside.

Almost immediately Thane noticed a difference, beyond the caked on dust, cobwebs and half rotten bookshelves. If Thane had to guess half the tomes in the restricted section were cursed or hexed in some way or another, meaning his plan of copying every book in the section would have to wait as uncursing an object took more than a handful of seconds.

Still Thane didn't let that fact slow him down as he made his way through the restricted section looking for one book in particular. Not daring to use any magic less he triggered some kind of alarm, it took Thane awhile to find the section he was looking for but eventually he came across a series of heavy blue tomes with leather covers and golden script along the spines.

Thane breathed a sigh of relief as it had been a gamble whether or not Hogwarts even had the books in their possession. Quickening his pace Thane scanned the books for any malefic magic only to grin as he found none, meaning there was nothing stopping him from copying the five book series of Merlin's Guide to Ritual Magic.

After reading almost every piece of literature with even the slightest relationship to ritual magic Thane had come across the book series which was mentioned only in passing, but cited as the go to foundational text for ritual magic.

Reaching out Thane picked up the first tome in the series and started to carefully open the book, only for a piercing scream to echo through the restricted section from only a few bookshelves over. Thane cursed and he quickly put the book back to its proper place before copying the entire series into his grimoire and beating a hasty retreat.

As he reached the end of the isle Thane heard the shuffle of feet behind him and he spun around only to find empty air. Frowning, Thane narrowed his eyes as he felt a powerful and familiar aura radiating from only a few feet in front of him, one that he had only experienced once before when he had claimed his fae artifacts.

Taking out his spellblade Thane was ready to cast a spell when the air in front of him ripple like cloth as Harry stood up with a long silver cloak draped over his shoulders, "Wait, it's just me!"

Thane paused and almost lowered his guard when Elara's teacher screamed at him to do the opposite, "Harry…what are you doing here?"

"I didn't want to go back for the holiday," Harry replied only for Thane to roll his eyes, "I meant in the restricted section."

"Oh," Harry replied lamely as he looked around nervously, "Uh…what are you doing…in the restricted section?"

Thane let out an exasperated sigh, "Let's talk somewhere else that we won't get expelled for getting caught in, alright."

---

Stepping into the common room Thane looked behind him to see Harry hesitating by the door, "Relax the snakes are all gone, I'm the only one left."

Harry nodded and stepped into the room as Thane sank into one of the many leather chairs around the room, "The only one left…you didn't feel like going home?"

Thane snorted as he reached up to rub his forehead, "No not really, I kinda just up and left didn't even leave a note."

Harry frowned and Thane could almost feel the judgment rolling off Harry in waves, "You just left your parents like that?"

Thane smirked, "No I'm in the same boat as you I'm afraid, though my parents didn't die heroically fighting a dark wizard lord. Pretty sure mine just left me at the doorstep of the orphanage, or maybe my mom died during childbirth and my dad wasn't in the picture."

Thane shrugged, "Guess the how and why doesn't matter really, only the outcome. Fifteen years of neglect and harassment. That's the type of environment that breeds sociopath's by the way."

Harry blinked as he stood on the spot processing everything Thane had just dumped on him, "You're an orphan…like me?"

"Surprise," Thane replied with mock joy and enthusiasm, "You're the first to find out."

"You didn't tell anyone," Harry spoke again but Thane had the unique distinction that he wasn't speaking to him.

"A bit hard to bring up childhood trauma at the dinner table don't you think," Thane asked with a raised eyebrow.

Harry then looked around the common room once more, "Have…have you been alone the entire holiday?"

Thane didn't answer that question, instead only looking at Harry with a piercing gaze, "What do you want, Potter? You've seen how I'm regarded around school…they act like I'm some dangerous beast that needs to be locked up…I would have been better off if I left you, Weasley and Granger fend off the troll yourselves. Though I think it only would have delayed whatever happened with Hermione."

"She loved you, you know? Still does a little I think," Harry replied suddenly only for Thane to roll his eyes, "We only knew each other for a month, month and a half at the most, stop acting like I got cheating in a ten year marriage. Besides it was for her own good, I got enough going on."

"Like sneaking into the restricted section?" Harry asking accusingly

"Hypocrite much?" Thane replied, as he stood up, "But don't worry I won't ask what you were doing in there. Though I do have one question…where did you get the cloak?"

Harry flinched and reflexively held on tighter to the silver bundle of cloth clutched in his arms, "It was a christmas present…why do you want to know?"

"Who gave it to you then?" Thane asked again as he slowly made his way around the chair to stand directly in front of Harry who took an uneasy step back, "None of your business."

"I'm afraid that it is my business, see what you have there in your hands is a magical artifact…and not just any magical artifact, but one that belongs to my family." Thane replied as his emerald eyes gleamed.

"I thought you said you were an orphan," Harry replied as he took another step back and his clutch on the cloak tightened.

"Yes, but that doesn't mean I'm alone in the world," Thane replied as he held out his left hand where an emerald and silver signet ring sat on his pinky finger. The symbol of a massive tree etched onto the massive emerald in the middle of the ring started to glow with a bright silver light.

At the same time the cloak in Harry's hand started to glow as well, giving off an ephemeral light like the moon on a clear night. Then before Harry could react the cloak came alive slipping out of his grasp and flying across the room to Thane.

As the piece of fabric took flight, it expanded and morphed turning into a magical robe of pure silver with emerald vine embroidery that settled onto Thane's shoulders.
