Chapitre 6: Sandwiches

"You want tuna in yours, B?" Jerry says on the phone," with mayo right?"

"Yes, please" I chirp. I'm super happy today because we are going back to the greenhouse today. We decided to name her 'Bella' Jerry didn't agree but I came up with the name so Nacho sided with me. Just to spite Jerry. Last week we didn't do much as we didn't have any tools or anything. We kind of just ran around the field singing songs from musicals, coming up with names and telling each other what we should do to Bella. Jerry has now bought a wheelbarrow, trowels, seeds and gloves. Jerry stung himself with a nettle the other week so now we have to be super careful. He was being stupid though. He tried to grab with his bare hands just because Nacho said not to so...

"Make sure you wear something warm, Bea," Jerry warns, "I don't want you to be cold."

"Yes mum," I mutter. There's silence on the other side of the line and I realise how mean that might have sounded. She would be disappointed.

"Want to talk about it?" he says feebly. He knows I don't. I hang up. Idiot. I throw my phone onto my bed. I look through all my jumper dresses. I pause at the red one that Nacho and Jerry got me for Christmas last year. might as well wear that one. I pull it on with some black knee-high socks and grab my wellies from the rack near that door. I sign out in the book and grab my coat on my way out. people call after me as I run down the gravel path but they don't run after me so I keep going. I hop down the road pulling on my boots. I'm coming, Bella.

When I get there Jerry sitting on a stump of a tree with Nacho comforting him, "it's gonna be fine, Jerry. You didn't do anything wrong, it's okay."

"You don't understand. she hung up on me! She wouldn't do that she knows that if she doesn't say goodbye she'll want something bad to happen to me," he sobs and wipes his nose.

"Why would you think that?" Nach says rubbing his back.

"Because that's what she did to her dad!" He blurts out. Almost immediately he whips his hands to his mouth. I burn a bright red, "don't tell her I said that."

Nacho nods and holds Jerry close as he cries silently into Nacho's shoulder. I God I fucked up. I fucked up BAD. I slip down from the wall and silently steal away. What have I done?
