Chapitre 1: GSS: - Chapter 1: Corporal Ein, just Ein

[Daily login reward received:

Charisma slightly improved.]

I sigh, squeezing the trigger of my M36 Kantrael Pattern Lasrifle. Immediately, a beam of red light burns through the air. The condensed pulse of energy strikes the steel target dead-center, piercing through it without any trouble before exploding on something, somewhere. Once again, I hit a long-distance target using nothing but a set of ironsight, thus impressing the Lieutenant next to me again.

"Really, why aren't you in the Sharpshooter Corp yet, Ein?" The Sergeant of my squad says with a humorous laugh, taking in the Crowns the other Sergeants are now handing over to him for losing the bet.

Earlier today, the Sergeant responsible for my squad approached me to participate in a platoon marksmanship competition. The competition winner will then move on to compete in the company-size event, ultimately ending up in a test of skill with other shooters in the entire regiment. As a mere Corporal in the grand scheme of things, I am the best shooter in my squad, and an equally best soldier my Sergeant ever have the honor to lead according to the man. As such, he will always boast to others about me, propping me up as a fine example of the Cadian spirit. Hence, when it comes to this competitive match, the other squads bring forth their very best to match up against me. All of them are eager to attain the honor of a winner, not to mention getting a cut of the betting pool that is organized by the Sergeants themselves. Having been on the field for a long time, these Sergeants accrued enough Crowns to splurge on the bet. The bigger the bet, the more confident the Sergeants are in their subordinates, and they do not want to shame us grunts by playing it safe. Unfortunately for my other comrades, I am just unbeatable in marksmanship due to my frankly inhuman level of skill.

Yes, I cheat, all thanks to the System given to me in my transmigration to this Warhammer 40k universe. Each day, in the early morning according to the Solar hour, a random login reward will be given. These can be either a variable increase in attributes, random skills, esoteric knowledge, or physical objects that are kept in a separate dimension, courtesy of the System itself. The last thing I need is to pull the freaking UNSC Spirit of Fire out of thin air and be accused of heresy by the regiment Commissar or Chaplain.

That said, during my time dwelling in the Cadian archives and the many snippets I learned as an Imperial Guardswoman, I have come to acknowledge that this is an alternate universe of the 40k world. Instead of the normal grim dark setting of Warhammer, things in this alternate universe are a tad more... Brighter? Albeit only just slightly so.

The first notable difference is that the Emperor of Mankind is a she. While a surprise to be sure, it's not a jaw-dropping shocker when history has already depicted numerous females bearing the title of Emperors instead of Empresses. Yet, true amazement comes to in the fact that the Primarchs of the venerable Adeptus Astartes are also females, with rumors of Space Marines being a mixed service. For some time, I thought only the Adeptus Custodes had transhuman males and females among their ranks in Her service, but it seems I was wrong to count on some shoddy meta-knowledge. Still, not everything I know is unusable, I do manage to verify that the Sisters of Battle is still a thing. I count that detail as a small wind.

The point is, I have long treated this universe as a very, very serious opponent since I first gained clarity. The Archenemy, the Ork, the Tyrannids... Hell, even the local faunas are out to get a bite of humanity at every corner of this galaxy. In this world, you can't even trust yourself if you're unlucky and fall prey to Chaos' manipulation. In 40k, a singular Astartes may amount to next to nothing, much less normal flesh and blood. In the dark future of mankind, quantity is forced to have a quality of its own. If a transmigrator fails to adopt a flexible yet resilient mindset the moment they set foot into this domain, even death can't be considered a release.

Fortunately for myself, I cheat. Yeah, you will be seeing me cheat a lot from here on out. My cheat is the System, gifted to me by a lovely Omniversal bartender and a certain overworked Shoggoth who loves cookies way too much. If we're going by an isekai term, then they're what you call ROBs. The System I received might be considered barebone by many others. Yet to me, I love the fact that the System is concise and without needless flourishing.

Really, can you really quantify a person's physical and mental values? Can you even possibly do that in a coherent format when this person's power has reached a ridiculous point? Other than bloating up the System's screen, I don't see why I would want that many details whenever I lay my eyes on its greenish screen. Something along the lines of showing what skills I have, a note of my power level, the things I have in my inventory, the rewards I received, or even an enemy assessment is fine by me. That said, there have been times when the System received an upgrade in the Daily Logins. They're mostly quality-of-life updates so I won't harp on that. Rather, I think the best rewards I have gotten so far are the attribute increases and skills.

While not up to the point of augmented humans or transhuman, my overall strength can be considered a cut above normal elite guardsmen level. However, my strength lies in my dexterity and agility, something that I always play to great effect in training and combat. For the skills category, I learn anything from mundane skills like cooking and survival to combat skills like marksmanship and CQC-combat. Some rewards boost my cognitive function or even allow me to compete for a spot in the Adeptus Mechanicus but I think my most prized possessions are these two particular skills.

[Debuff Immunity:

Grants complete immunity to any ill-effect.

Things like mind control, mental manipulation, soul or physical poisoning, sickness,... As long as the effect is detrimental to the bearer of this skill, the bearer will not be affected. The bearer will be able to survive and thrive with an indomitable spirit and body, completely free from influences of the negative kind.

Mitigate fatigue, pain, and negative emotions.

This skill has little to no room for improvement.]

[Battle meditation:

A skill that boosts the morale, stamina, and overall battle prowess of the user and an individual's allies while reducing the opposition's combat-effectiveness by eroding their will to fight.

The buffs are applied to allies under the command of the skill bearer. It also exists as an aura, with those directly under the command of the skill bearer receiving the largest benefits. Debuffs are applied to the enemy in the radius of this aura.

The buffs, debuffs, and aura radius scale with the power and understanding of the skill bearer in the way of warfare.

Warning! Overdrafting the skill will induce mental burdens on the skill bearer. The effect is mitigated by the skill Debuff Immunity.

Acclimating with the skill for a prolonged period will reduce the mental load. Please train hard, skill bearer!]

Right, in the right hand, meaning me, these two skills are the basis for some ridiculous late-game shenanigans. Imagine bitch-slapping a team of Heretic Astartes with nothing but two platoons of unbending Guardsmen, now that's a sight to behold. Regardless, I am but a normal Corporal on the planet of Cadia for now. And yes, Cadia is still unbroken by the Despoiler at this point. However, many skirmishes have already occurred. I do not doubt that the 13th Black Crusade will start in the future. Given my shaky meta knowledge, the 13th Black Crusade will mark one of the darkest periods in mankind's history. There is much that needs to be done before then.

Obviously, after 16 years of daily login in the 40k universe, I am considered talented if not a genius in the eyes of my Cadian compatriots. Yet, with how young I am and how many people there are in an entire regiment, much less a hive city or even a planet, it will be some time before I can elevate myself someplace higher. However, this only applies if I am to be a Guardswoman for life.

With the knowledge and skills granted by the System, I strive to make the Imperium of Man better as a whole. Technology in the 40k universe has regressed much since the Age of Technology. The subsequent Age of Strife resulted in an appreciation for ignorance and backwardness over the advancement of science and technology. This is further compounded by the centralization of all Human technical and scientific knowledge in the hands of the theocratic and secretive Mechanicus, preventing the dissemination of known science and technology across the galaxy that might speed up the process of innovation.

Humanity as a whole became more superstitious and distrustful of advanced technology and the unknown because of the myriad horrors perpetrated during the Age of Strife. In this era, humanity loath a change that proves too major for its narrow worldview. Unfortunately, no one can challenge this notion, not until Roboute Guilliman recovers from the wound inflicted by the Heretics... No, in this universe, Roboute Guilliman is named Reyanna Guilliman. Honestly, I am still trying to wrap my head around the new names of the Primarchs, Loyalists, and Heretics alike. Truly, 40k is a universe filled with wonders.

My mulling is soon cut short, however, when my Sergeant presents me with my share of the betting pool and even a hefty bonus because he is that much of a nice guy. We both share a fist bump before I am soon approached by the Company Captain. Both my Sergeant and I salute the high-ranking officer, to which the bald man returns with professionalism.

"Sergeant, Corporal." The Captain greets.

"Sir." The two of us reply while standing at attention.

"Fine shooting today, young lady." The veteran Captain says to me with the faintest hint of a smirk on his wrinkled face. "You have proven yourself to be a good markswoman. In fact, the shots I see you pull off with that Lasrifle rival those from an actual sniper with a Long-Las. My aide here can vouch for my comment."

The Captain's aide, a woman with an eyepatch that also bears a sniper's badge, nods. "I remember you, Corporal Ein. You have been one of the most promising students I have ever trained. It seems that you have improved a lot since you graduated from the Whiteshield."

I nod at the woman, my former instructor with a faint smile. "Thank you, ma'am. It's good to see you again."

The woman barks a laugh. "Girl, you're the only one that so far that says that." She then turns to the Captain. "Captain, she's a fine Cadian. She may be young, but she can get far with the right support. Her shooting skill is such that she is unmatched in our company. Perhaps we can immediately elevate her to the regimental level competition."

"With what we have seen so far, I reckon no one will be remiss of us doing such." The Captain turns to look at us. "We do get the recording down, right?"

"Got them all recorded back there, Captain." The Sergeant points at a corner of the range with a smile. "We're doing this with full transparency."

The Captain nods. "Right, but do edit out the betting part. Otherwise, someone will breathe down your neck and it won't be me."

The Sergeant of my squad salutes with a smirk. "You got it, sir."

Thus I end the day with some Crowns heavier than before. And in case you haven't paid attention. I am Corporal Ein, just Ein. Born in the fortress world of Cadia and now a proud member of the Cadian Shock Trooper, I am what you may call an experienced lady in life. Why? Because Cadians are just born different. As for my goal in this grim dark future? Well, I do not want to survive, I want to thrive. Giving the Heretics a bloody nose will be my first step in doing so.
