After the portal closed, I turned my attention back to the girl standing in the dim room. She swayed slightly as she tried to steady herself, her eyes darting around with a mix of fear and exhaustion. Her torn and dirty clothes told the story of a desperate escape, and the grime on her face made it clear she had been through a lot. The dim light in the room cast long shadows, making everything feel even more tense.
I tried to control my urge to immediately help her and asked, "Who are you?" My voice was calm but carried an authority that came naturally with Hermione's persona.
The girl looked at me with wide eyes, a mix of fear and hope in her expression. She hesitated for a moment, seemingly unsure of what to say. Finally, she said, "I need help."
I stared at her, trying to keep my expression neutral. I was ready to act quickly if needed, so I kept my stance firm.
Her voice was shaky as she continued, "We escaped from a lab. They were experimenting on us. Please, we need your help."
I frowned and asked, "Are you a mutant?"
She looked down briefly, collecting her thoughts before meeting my gaze again. "Yes, we are mutants."
I pressed further, "How did you manage to create the portal to this place?"
The girl's face showed a hint of hesitation. "Emily, one of our friends, has the ability to create portals. They're sometimes random, but she managed to get us here."
I studied her closely. "It seems like you were aiming for a specific place. Was this planned?"
Her eyes widened in surprise, and she nodded. "Yes, it was planned. Mia, another member of our group, can influence luck. She made sure I had a chance of ending up somewhere safe, where i can get help."
I raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you trusting me a bit too easily? What's your ability?"
She hesitated, her eyes showing a mix of fear and resolve. "I can sense a person's emotions. I can tell you're not afraid of me as a mutant and that you haven't decided to kill me yet."
The air was thick with tension as we both stood in silence.
I gestured for her to sit down. "Start from the beginning. How did you end up in that laboratory?"
She took a deep breath, her voice wavering slightly, "I know we were created using the DNA of different mutants. Some of us were brought in after being captured. They kept us in cages, conducting experiments. It was brutal".
I leaned in, trying to piece together the fragments of her story. "What kind of experiments?"
"Various things," she said, her eyes downcast. "Injections, physical tests… they tried to enhance our powers or create new ones. They were relentless."
I nodded, trying to keep my expression neutral. "And how did you manage to escape?"
The girl's face grew somber. "A few weeks ago, one of the other girls, she's called laura, attacked the guards. She has healing abilities and metal claws. She created a diversion, and Dr. Molly helped us escape."
"Dr. Molly?" I asked, intrigued. "What happened to her?"
Tears welled up in her eyes. "She died. The guards… they killed her."
I raised an eyebrow, considering the implications. "What about laura ? You said she attacked the guards. What's her current situation?"
"She's safe for now," the girl replied. " we all regroup."
The situation felt oddly familiar, almost like a twist on the Logan story but with its own unique elements. I glanced at the girl, trying to figure out my next move. She hadn't seen my real face, so I could easily just kill her and destroy her body. But that wasn't what I wanted to do. Hearing their desperate situation stirred something in me—maybe it was because of my templates. With no clear villain in template, I felt like I was stepping into a role of a hero or an antihero.
I considered calling the X-Men. Their contact number is saved on my phone from internet and they could offer professional help. However, I didn't want to waste this opportunity. There were fifteen mutants, none of them affiliated with any group. The thought of potentially adding some new allies, especially the undead soldier, was tempting. X-23 alone would make this worth the risk.
Taking a deep breath, I made up my mind. I would help them. It felt like the right thing to do, and maybe this was a chance to do some good and build a team. It's not like I can read her mind to know if it's truth or not.
With a determined nod, I turned back to the girl. "Alright," I said, my voice steady, "I'm going to help you. But first, I need to know everything you can tell me. Every detail matters."
The girl nodded, her expression a mix of hope and fear. "Thank you. I'll tell you everything I can. We just need help to survive and find a way to regroup."
I motioned for her to continue, ready to listen closely. This was no ordinary rescue mission; it was the beginning of something much more complex and potentially dangerous.
