I opened my eyes after being shaken several times. Right, I had fallen through that gate or whatever it was. I still felt sick, but when my vision cleared, Hoshi-san's face came into focus right in front of me.

We seemed to be in a forest somewhere. The sun hadn't set yet, but it was surprisingly cold and there was some snow on the ground.
We were both dressed for midsummer. I forced myself to calm down and take a deep breath as I began to think things through. Auntie was watching me with a worried, pleading look in her eyes.
That guy had said something about entering the gate without a tag. So the gate must have been a portal between our world and theirs, and the thing they'd put around Akari's neck must have been a "tag".
Without it, Auntie and I would have fallen through the gate at random, like undeliverable mail, and probably ended up somewhere even they couldn't predict.
If that was true, then maybe we weren't in their world, but we weren't in ours either. I finally began to understand the seriousness of our situation.
"Auntie, please calm down and listen carefully. First, we need to figure out where we are and how to get back. But before that, we have to survive, otherwise we might die out here."
"But if we don't save Akari soon, those pig creatures will eat her soon..."
"Calm down! I know, but we can't help her if we don't survive first. We accidentally fell through the gate, and it looked like the gate needed to be readjusted. If we're lucky, my dad or the police might get there in time. Let's concentrate on getting back alive!"
"You're right... Okay, I understand. I'll do as you say, Yu-kun."
I removed the ropes and gag that had bound me, deciding that they could be useful tools. All I had left was my smartphone and coin purse; my wooden sword had been confiscated when we were captured.
Auntie had nothing but the clothes on her back. It would probably be night soon, and it would probably get colder.
I couldn't help wishing I had been the kind of person to carry a lighter, this suddenly felt like a challenging survival situation.
Moving around at night in an unfamiliar place was too risky. The first step was to find shelter. If this was a world where pigmen existed, who knew what other creatures might be out there? And with Auntie, whose fighting skills were probably minimal, we couldn't afford to take any chances.
This really did seem like a primeval forest, with no signs of civilization anywhere.
As little as it helped, I managed to find a sturdy branch that could serve as a makeshift wooden sword.
I had some knowledge of the outdoors from my time in the Boy Scouts and summer camps with Akari, but this jungle felt like a far more daunting challenge.

"Auntie, are you cold? You're only wearing a T-shirt and shorts. Would you like to wear my T-shirt over your clothes?"

"That's okay. I can handle it."
With that, I took off my T-shirt and put it over her.

Well, that would work for now, but even I started to feel the cold.
The sun had already set and I was getting worried, but I managed to find a small gap between a rock and a tree that could block the wind a bit.
I decided we'd huddle there until morning. Fortunately, it wasn't raining or snowing, and as long as we stayed out of the wind, we wouldn't lose too much body heat. Still, I didn't expect to get much sleep.
I crouched down, pressed my back against the rock to close the gap, and then positioned Auntie on my lap, holding her close. It was an uncomfortable position, but in this emergency we had to share body heat. She followed my lead without complaint.
"Are you warm enough?" I asked.

Yes, raw water can be risky, and ideally I'd want to boil it, but that might be too much to hope for right now. The clock on my smartphone said 8:45 a.m., so maybe the days here are similar in length to ours.
When you get lost in the mountains and can't be rescued, it's usually a good idea to find a high point to observe your surroundings.
But with an elderly lady beside me and not much energy, we decided to look for water instead, heading downhill in search of a stream.
The forest was gently sloping, so we followed the lower ground, moving slowly forward. Aunt didn't have shoes, so I lent her mine.
They didn't fit well, so it was hard to walk at a steady pace. Finally, around noon, we found a small stream.
I was hoping to see insects or fish that would indicate the water was safe. But I hadn't seen any animals or insects since the morning, only the sound of distant birds. I was extremely thirsty, so I carefully tasted some of the creek water.
Aunt watched me with a worried look on her face. The water was tasteless, odorless-just water. I took a chance and drank more, cupping it in my hands.
After ten minutes without any strange effects, I thought it was safe and let aunt drink as well.
"Whew, I'm back to life. I was so close to turning into a raisin."

"Okay. Can I at least wash my feet and face? I'm getting blisters from walking!"
"That's okay. Just be careful not to get too cold since we don't have any towels or anything."
"All right, just a quick wash then. I'd like a full bath."
"No, please don't undress for a bath in this cold weather. You'll definitely catch a cold."
"Well, I guess Yu-kun wouldn't mind seeing it."

Now that we had water, we both felt much better.
When lost in the mountains, it's usually wise to follow a stream uphill to find the source, but in our case, moving to higher ground wouldn't necessarily help, especially without knowing if there was any civilization nearby.
So we decided to follow the stream downhill, hoping it would lead us to a river or the sea.
Just as the sun was setting, we finally reached a wide riverbank. And... bingo! There was a makeshift hut that looked like it had been built by a human, maybe a hunter or a charcoal burner. It looked like it might provide shelter from the rain for a while.
The hut was made of wood and rope, with no metal or glass. Instead of a door, it had a straw mat. I pushed the straw aside to look inside, hoping for food, but there was nothing edible.
"Yu-kun, Yu-kun! Look, over here!"
I went outside to check out the noise the old lady was making, and it looked like there were the remains of a hearth. It looked like this place had once had some level of civilization where they could use fire.
There were also some clay bowls nearby, and it looked like we could cook food if we could get the fire going. So maybe... I thought as I looked around the hut again.
There it is! This must be it - a piece of flint. I struck it against the larger stone next to the fireplace, and sure enough, sparks flew.
We can do this! I asked my aunt for help, and together we gathered as many dead branches and leaves as we could before the sun set. Luckily, it hadn't rained or snowed in the last few days, so the dead leaves were dry enough to start a fire.
"Wow, that's amazing! Yuu-kun really can do everything. I've fallen in love with you all over again."
"Haha. If you have the right tools, you can do a lot with just a spark. We went to summer camp together, remember?"

But even though we managed to get a fire going, there was still nothing to eat, and soon the sun went down, ending our search for the day.
Also, when we lit a fire inside the hut, we realized that it had no ventilation, so we couldn't stay inside because of the intense smoke. This hut was probably designed for summer use.
Finally, we boiled some water, drank it, dried ourselves, and went to sleep in the hut, huddled together again. We had heated some large stones in the fire and brought them in as makeshift heating pads, which made it much more comfortable than last night. This way, we wouldn't freeze even if we fell asleep.
"Thank you, Yuu-kun. If it were just me, I would probably have frozen to death by now. I'll do my best to help as much as I can, so please rely on me a little."
"Thank you. Tomorrow we'll look for food. And we have to find more clothes - we don't know if it will be spring or winter here".
"Can I stay with you a little longer?"
