Chapitre 21: Chapter 5: Part 3 – The Apartment

= CHRIS POV =

I waited downstairs while Sarah got ready. I needed to dip out and walked to the vending machine at the lift lobby to get us some drinks. Had I known I would have grabbed some free coffees from the barista at the hotel, but who was I to know that my apartment was literally going to be trashed by the time I got home.

"Chris~~!" I heard Sarah say from behind me.

I turned to see her coming out of the lift. She was truly a vision in cream as she walked towards me. Her tank top clung to her chest like a second skin and her pencil skirt folded around her hips beckoningly. She kind of ruined the look a little with those ugly fur brown boots that she loved to wear, but the fur around the rims matched the rest of her look, so I had to forgive her for that.

Sarah adjusted the sling purse on her shoulder as she reached out for the drinks in my hand.

"Shall I help you with those?" She said, smiling sweetly.

After all she had done, to my home…. why was I still putting up with her nonsense?

I forced a smile and gave her the drinks. I got us each a can of coffee as we were coffee addicts and walked us out of the lobby towards the park.

The walk was quiet as I really didn't want to say anything I would regret. After a 12 hour shift, I was hungry and tired and I really liked Sarah, but there was a limit, and I was starting to realise, even for someone I had a crush on, there was a limit, and she was reaching it.

Sarah started a monologue, which I nodded my head to every now and again, and as we walked through the park, I tuned out while looking around for an available place to sit.

"Lol, I can see my apartment from here-" I suddenly heard Sarah say.

I stopped. Her apartment? Her apartment was literally an hour's drive away. What did she mean?

"Really, where?" I asked and turned to her, expecting her to point at some distant star in the horizon.

"Over there! I literally can see my window from here" Sarah giggled as she pointed out a building literally on the other side of the park.

I looked up at the building, then I looked at Sarah.

"What?"

Sarah froze, as if she had suddenly turned into a deer in headlights.

"Umm…what I mean to say…" she stumbled over her words, her eyes looking back and forth at from the apartment building in question to my livid face.

"Sarah. You just trashed my apartment and upturned my life. Are you seriously going to stand there, and tell me, you have an apartment of your own?" I asked, trying my best to stay calm when all I wanted to do was shout at her.

Sarah turned to me with tears in her eyes. Her hands clutched the front of her top and I could see her shoulder rising and falling rapidly as she was breathing heavily.

I was freaking her out. She was freaked out. What am I doing?

I looked down and under my breath, counted to ten. I must be misunderstanding what she was talking about. I hadn't even been paying attention, she could have been talking about a previous place she stayed at.

As I looked down I saw her take a step back and I reached out and grabbed her wrist.

"Just. Explain" I said and looked up at her. She was trembling, I had to stop that. I didn't want her to fear me "Look, I'm tired, I think I wasn't listening to half of what you said. Please, explain to me what you said".

Sarah looked down on the ground "Please don't hit me, or be mad at me" she said quietly, her voice trembling.

There was a bench nearby, so I walked over to it with Sarah in tow, and sat down.

"I do not hit people, not unless they hit my first" I said, and patted the empty space next to me.

"Ok" Sarah said and sat down "So the thing is…I may have lied to you, about the whole being homeless thing. I was drunk and… I said some stupid things…"

"But you weren't drunk yesterday. You literally kept brandishing this contract like it was the only thing that would allow you to stay at my place" I asked her.

"Because I wanted to spend more time with you. I barely get to see you. I tried to tell you it was a joke, remember? At the lift? And during dinner, and you kept dismissing me. I just wanted to prank you, and I thought, we'd laugh about it, and it would be funny…but it kind of got a bit out of control" Sarah explained, looking really frazzled.

"At the lift?" I said scratching my head, trying to remember when she said that…" Oh right! I thought you meant that your life was a joke, that everything that was going on was so awful, you were trying to make light of the situation" I replied, sitting back " Wow, your pranks, suck"

Sarah hung her head dejectedly "Sorry. I just really wanted to…do something which brought us closer together" she explained nervously.

I looked back at the apartment that she had pointed out earlier.

"So which unit is it? That explains why you only had one suitcase with you," realised and felt like a fool "then what was the eviction notice about?" I asked her.

"Oh I got evicted from the previous place I lived at. I kept myself that notice to remind myself that I really need to get a job if I didn't want to experience that again" Sarah explained " I really should have hidden that better. The unit is 08-12, over there" Sarah said and pointed to a darkened window on the eighth floor.

Like magic, just as she pointed out the apartment, the lights in the apartment turned on.

"Oh, so I guess you have roommates?" I asked, feeling really sour about all of this.

Sarah jumped up. "No, no I don't! OMG, am I getting robbed?"

"Huh, seriously?" I said and stood up, but Sarah was already running across the park, heading straight for the building.
