Author's POV.
"This life is over," said a hoarse and frightening voice.
It came from an imposing man entirely dressed in black, holding a scythe in his withered hand.
He exuded a sinister and dark atmosphere, everything about him screamed death and the end of all things.
"Indeed, it's finally over," said the teenager dispassionately in front of the ominous being, as if his fate mattered little to him.
This teenager was named Thomas Park, an unhappy young man who had recently taken his own life out of despair.
"I can understand your relief at having been able to obtain 'death,'" said the unsettling man in black as he brought his "face" closer to the boy's.
"But know that death is a cruel thing that symbolizes the end or despair for many," he said as he walked slowly around the young man.
"That is why it is rejected by all. Whereas life is a sweet thing that symbolizes hope, which is why it is so sought after, especially in hell," he declared in an ominous voice, as blue flames flickered in the place where his eyes should have been toward the end of his words.
Thomas listened to the words of the supernatural being in front of him without reacting too much.
The reason for his indifference was simple.
Thomas thought he could not fall any lower than he already was.
Since birth, he had never known happiness, only the pain of grief and sometimes the false hopes of love.
The only thing that had been able to color his gray life was anime and manga, but those were merely painkillers, not a cure for his problem.
Thus, the current Thomas was a broken man who no longer expected anything from life and had simply preferred to end it all.
"Anyway, I've finished most of the mangas I loved, so there's nothing left to keep me on Earth," he thought bitterly.
"If I can't be happy in this life, I can at least try my luck in the next one, if there is one, of course, Mr. Death," Thomas expressed as he scrutinized the darkness under the black-clad man's hood.
And this was also the first time in a long while that he had a conversation with someone other than those on the other side of his phone screen.
Normally, humans fear the unknown, so a normal human would have feared the unknown that Death represented, but Thomas no longer qualified to be considered as such.
There was no fear in his eyes, only the hope of a possible end or a better future that he had often read about in light novels or fanfics.
When the supernatural being observed the complex emotions in Thomas's eyes, he could not help but laugh.
But because of his deep voice, it sounded a little frightening.
"You're funny, I've rarely seen such an interesting human."
"And the last one I encountered like you is currently dead in a war between gods in another reality, I believe that place is called on Earth 'Warlock of the Magus World,'" he said after stopping his laughter.
"Currently, you should be happy, my child, for today your misery finally ends," declared the supernatural being.
"I stand before you not to take your pitiful life and conclude your existence with this miserable end, but to correct your karma, which is the cause of all this misery," he explained before being interrupted by Thomas.
"Wait a minute, you've lost me, can you explain more slowly?" said Thomas, slightly confused.
"I'll be brief, for I am an extremely busy being, kid," he said, grunting slightly due to the previous interruption.
"Thomas Park, you were born with extremely negative karma for a reason that still eludes me, and you're not the first to suffer such an accident," he calmly explained.
"This negative karma is the cause of your numerous problems in your life on Earth," he declared to Thomas.
"Normally, all humans are born with neutral karma if they were freshly reincarnated sinners by Samara, or positive if they accomplished great achievements in their previous life," he explained, holding his chin as if pondering something.
"But your case still eludes me," he said after a brief pause.
"So all this time... suffering from unknown illnesses and enduring the deaths of my loved ones, was that it?? A system error?" Thomas asked in a broken tone.
He, who had thought he had hit rock bottom, was unfortunately mistaken.
Death could sense Thomas's despair.
And she could read in his eyes a despair rarely seen in her long existence.
"Do not worry about your loved ones who died due to various unfortunate accidents caused by your negative karma," Death declared to soothe Thomas.
"They all currently live in various realities within the infinity of the multiverse and have been compensated for being victims of your unique situation," he calmly explained.
After hearing this good news, Thomas was able to calm down, but his case still angered him.
"If they live in other realities and are satisfied with their compensation, then I have no reason to be angry on their behalf," he thought, trying to regain control of his emotions.
"To resolve your situation, I will now purify the remaining negative karma that you have not resolved on Earth through various accidents and give you a second life," he declared in a gentle tone.
"Of course, you will receive compensation, for you have endured a very traumatic life," Death declared.
As he said this, several magic circles appeared out of nowhere around Thomas.
"It seems we do not have much time left, and the purification has begun," Death said, looking around her.
"For your compensation, you have the right to one wish, but it is limited by the laws of the world you will go to. Your new life will be in a world of your chosen genre, as with your loved ones," he informed Thomas, slightly more quickly.
It seemed that Thomas no longer had much time left with Death.
"Are fictional worlds included in your proposal?" Thomas asked, slightly impatient.
"Yes, there is even a close friend of yours who is currently in DxD," Death declared nonchalantly.
"I can't tell him that his friend died in the great war in the Hebrew pantheon," Death thought, slightly amused by the death of Thomas's friend as a virgin.
"I want a new life without attachments to my painful past, so the DxD option is out of the question now," Thomas said honestly as he pondered.
"Tell me, will I keep my memories in this new life?" Thomas asked to make sure, as a final formality before making his requests.
"Yes, indeed, you will always keep your memories of Earth, otherwise it would not truly be you to whom I would have granted a wish and sent to another world," Death calmly replied.
"Alright, for my first wish, I want 'The Visionary' of Gremmy Thoumeaux from bleach but adapted to the laws of my future world," Thomas declared seriously.
But as soon as he finished formulating this wish, silence filled the space.
"Don't you find that you're a bit greedy?" Death asked in a serious tone .
Author's Note: Yes, the protagonist literally asked for Schrift V ("The Visionary"), he really is a greedy bastard.
